I was aware of Evangelion years before I actually watched the series , due to its reputation within the anime community. I eventually binged the series + EOE within the space of a week.

I first saw it years ago on toonami during giant robot week. I also characters like Rei and Asuka on the internet. And back in 2013, I decided to rent the series from Netflix, that's when I got a little mor into it. I think a year later, I've began watching the first two of the rebuild films. and for sometime now, I've been surfing the web about EVA related stuff, both out of fan interest and to look for some answers to clear up a bit of confusion (usually concerning two of the well known characters).

So that's how I got into it. ^_^

I'd heard the opening theme so many times in remixes and parodies that I decided to check out the original. Something about the lighthearted sounding song paired up with the horrific imagery portrayed through the rough, visceral look of 90s anime really messed with me. It made me feel the same way as I felt when I first played NiGHTS into Dreams, or learning about some sort of lost ancient civilization. I had always gotten this feeling when seeing pictures in textbooks about ancient humans, or seeing old ruins in person, like a sort of connection to early humans, which I know sounds dumb, but bear with me. The clinical corridors of NERV, the city streets, the bar that Misato, Ritsuko, and Kaji go to, they all matched up perfectly with how I envisioned what the world was like when I was a very young child, and that struck me. It made me feel the same way I felt going to church as a child, like there was something fantastical and supernatural about it, which now that I think about it, is scarily close to the show's premise. I got through the first 2 episodes on Kissanime (damn you, King Records), and was hooked.

Also, that CN broadcast version sounds hilarious, anyone know where I can find it?
*injects Angel blood* I know what the fuck an EVA is now :)

Watching first at Animax LA, it was in 2008.
I remember that the first episode that I saw was about the angel in the magma, I still remember the quote of Asuka about thermal expansion ^_^

Then I decided to watch the entire serie on Youtube in spanish/latino, in that time you could watch anything without the problem about copyright.

Few years ago. Around my apartment. I found this magazine on the ground. It was EVA-01. I couldn't understand so I asked my friend at school. He said it was Evangelion. So I decided to watch it all in 1 day. Even the End of Evangelion. I understood it all.

And I even watched the Rebuild movies. 1-3. Maybe it was a mistake watching the 3rd one but the CG is perfect. Hopefully 3.0+1.0 comes in a few months.
Pathetic.
I know all about your little jerk-off fantasies about me. Go ahead, and do it like you always do... I'll even stand here and watch you. But... if I can't have you all to myself, then I don't want ANYTHING from you.

I'd heard of the series but didn't see it until 2004, when I was pregnant with my daughter I had to be in bedrest and a friend loaned me the DVD series to watch. I watched it all the way through at least 4 times! Even had some really weird dreams about it.

I also watched all of Buffy, so the baby being a girl her name was a toss-up between Rei and Willow.

Ok so there's this spanish youtuber called DayoScript (freaking awesome, reviews videogames and series), and he mentioned Evangelion in some of his videos (actually, it is a very important series for him). I remember watching some anime in Toonami when I was 7 or 8, such as DragonBall Z, Saint Seiya, Naruto or Bobobo, but nothing else. I didn't knew much about famous anime or anything in general. Two years ago, a few of my friends asked me if I watched anime and I said no. Since then, I decided to give it another try and began by watching Attack on Titan. Loved it. Then I remembered that Dayo mentioned NGE a lot. A few months ago, when I was preparing for the spanish equivalent of the SAT, I watched the first episode. And I couldn't stop watching it. I finished it in 3 days. Since then, I have been reading and trying to understand a little bit more about this universe. And the best thing of all, is that I talked about NGE with my mom, and she actually enjoyed it and asked me if I could show it to her. Yesterday we finished episode 26, and tonight we are planning to watch The End of Evangelion. She is really enjoying it, even asked me about more animes to watch!

a German Youtuber put it at number #1 of his all-time favorite anime series and described it as epic and really mindfuck, which sparked my interest, but back when I first watched that video I didnt know the concept of streaming and searched for it on Youtube, where it (luckily) wasnt, so I kinda forgot about it until three or four years later... and then I binged the entire series, including all the movies, in like a week. (really happy I didnt watch it when I was like 13... that wouldnt have been good for my brain at all)

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

I heard a lot of things regarding the show, statements like "It is brain-fryer" or "Crazy". I disregarded the show for a while, but then some day in summer it struck me that I should watch this show, and I did.

It didn't strike me as it was described, but I liked it because "I had thoughts like these, maybe there are people who think like me".

I saw it being featured on a WatchMojo list for the Top Ten Scariest Anime Monsters, and decided to read about it. After that, i began to watch it.

youtube.

It was lngering around me every now and then, because I have every couple years or like once a year a feeling for some feelings, so I search for some anime I might like and that show here was always somewhere mentioned, but I couldn't get myself to care for some "christian" 'interpretation' of some "'robots'" fighting. Before I only got myself to watch the most awesome dumb movie, namely Pacific Rim a couple of times and got the DVD, which still lays around here untouched in its OP, so you may get what I think about giant robots fighting each other. But I liked the character development at first, with their "will-they-wont" 'romancing' (the reboot really build itself a foursome in that sense with Kaworu joining in) and realistic, yet not so over the top kawaii-esk anime tropes. Maybe I've grown out of the whole 'putting small attractive people in robots to fight'-scene, because the whole technology behind that is mostly bonkers. Maybe you have to thank Knights of Sedonia for that, which was what I binge watched some years ago, with almost the same affection right know, unless that show was already written...

It was because of his "old school anime" status. Not what i expected, but regardless, it gave me a lot to meditate to.

Summer 2001. I was 17.
Some guy I played Counter-Strike with gave me access to his FTP server to share movies and series.
I looked a bit and found many things, including an anime repository and a directory named Evangelion which I had never heard of.
I was like 'why not', downloaded it, started watching it.
It was a really bad quality rip, something like 144p.
But it was amazing ! I binged on it.

Pure f*cking luck or fate ?

I really had trouble making friends when I was young, Eva changed my point of view on social interractions.
Since then, now I'm 34, I still love Eva so much.
I even make French fansub for the Rebuild series.

Well, quite simple really. Not actually an otaku at first, but at random I came accross the intro and thought: "Hey, that sounds pretty good. I wonder what the comment sections has to say about it. Oh, it's from an anime? Huh, well I did enjoy Doki Doki Literature Club so I might as well give an anime a shot." My poor, poor mental stability. Oh, how I remember you fondly!
Evangelion made me an otaku. I'm in my hell, all is right with this world!

In 2012, I was 14 and I have pretty strict parents. The 22nd July of 2012 was a Sunday, and I had to go to school the next day, so I had to go to bed early. The thing is, I have good ears and a TV in my own room. So little young me is watching german TV quietly, listening for my mother to go to bed (my parents bedroom can only be reached through one of the 2 childrens rooms.) At 20:15 I start watching some kind of animated movie on SRTL, looks pretty intersting, something about a shy boy being brought into a city attacked by a monster, so I continue watching. At around 21:00 my mother comes into my room and tells me I have to sleep, so the good son I am, I turn off the TV and lay down. After around 15 min, I turn the TV on again via the remote, and continue my watching. The film ends, but wati! the next part is up right after! Yay! So I resume watching, until I hear my mother walking towards my room at around 22:45. Turning off the TV quickly, I pretend to sleep while my mother goes to bed. after waiting again around 15 min, I again turn on the TV and continue watching, this time till the end, before I go to sleep. (I never needed much sleep, so I was fine the next day.)

I forgot this/disregarded this until around March 2 years back, after I finished the last part of my High School Exames and arrived home. I just wanted to relax, just watching some films or a series. And the I remembered that night. To be exact, I remembered Ramiel and Shinjis Snipe, Misato showing Shinji Lilith, and the end of Rebuild 2.0, with the white glowing Unit-01 as well as the name Evangelion. So I look it up, find out it is a series and start watching until I reach the episode with Ramiel, which is very different from what I remembered. After some searching I find out there are actually some films to the series, which means what I watched years ago were those, but since I started the show, I continue watching that, followed by EOE and then Rebuild 1.11, 2.22 and 3.

That would be my story on how I found to Evangelion, and why I can never really hate the Rebuilds, since they were my very first contact with Evangelion.

@CommieOtaku: Doki Doki Literature Club and then Evangelion... Have you seen Madoka Magica yet?

@Celeptito: Man, this feels so nostalgic to me. Staying up late without permission, to watch Anime.

I'd heard a few mentions of the franchise growing up, and I think I saw a theatrical trailer for one of the films at a cinema once (but I have no idea which one because the memory is so hazy). I didn't get a sense of what the series was until I saw a review of it by (and please don't kill me) Jesuotaku, at any point I went "looks pretty cool".

I watched it for the first time in my fourth year of University, but I didn't really start to get into it until very recently, when I rewatched the series on my birthday less than two months ago. I only watched the Rebuild films about three weeks after that, the first two in one night and the third later in the week. My original plan was to wait for Final and watch all 4 together, but I decided against that because Japanese films can take a year to come out on DVD after they leave theatres.

As an aside, Evangelion was the first "mecha" show I watched that wasn't a Transformers series (which don't technically count because they're sentient characters and not piloted armor).
