I need this. The German Utena release is pretty bad, so I wanted to import the American DVDs. Shortly after I've ordered them, they announced a Blu-Ray release (that was in 2014 or '15, I think). Thankfully I was still able to cancel. I've waited and waited. I need this. Hopefully there is a way to get my hands on this despite being not from the US.

I hope the Blu-Ray set is brought over to Australia/NZ at some point, preferably with the movie included in the set (when the DVD remaster was released here 3-4 years ago, the movie was omitted, and at the time that was a deal-breaker).

I took the dive and ordered it. This will never come to German speaking territory anyways in such an appealing package. You could fetch one too, they apparently ship world wide.

The debut chapter of After the Revolution has drawn light to an interesting reveal:

Apparently every core Duelist has been missing a mother, if not both parents.

Sounds familiar, anyone?

Also, in case Stillborn or anyone else is interested, Seinen Kakumei Utena finally got updated :D

Thx for info. I'll probably wait till it's complete and read it all then. So I don't forget the plot between chapters XD

Watched this show recently.
It's amazing.
Also that movie ending.

This song is a gift from God himself:

Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

I put this on-hold. I know people love Utena to death, but I couldn't pass through it. Cheap homoerotic romance, cutesy absurd plot and magical girl parody isn't my thing. Maybe one day I'll complete it, but 39 episodes of this is like climbing the Everest with no arms (for me).

That's how I perceived the first half.
First-watch problems.
You don't know what to expect and what the show is going for. And Utena is especially obtuse.
The last 6 episodes are some of the best I've ever seen.

I 've only watched 8 episodes, so I obviously can't judge the series. I actually know that the show is going for something deep, philosophical, metaphysical, transcendental, etcetera. That's what I 've been heard since many years ago. But the thing is I find very difficult to pass through the first half, because of the things I already mentioned. Does the last episodes compensate all the previous bummer? I don't know. They must be a masterpiece in that case...

I found the central arc the hardest to stay with, as it can feel like a varied repeat of the first.

But stick with it. And then watch the film for an even wackier experience.

You guys just don't know what to do with all of the French New Wave artistry that Kunihiko Ikuhara seemed to have bought wholesale from the silent era so he could re-contextualize it in a contemporary aesthetic.

But, to be fair, Kunihiko Ikuhara probably didn't quite know what to do with it either. But it's that naive charm that draws me to the series in the first place.

I felt the same as you. I recommend watching it when you really have time and feel like watching it.
If you force it you won't enjoy it.
Yeah the last episodes are amazing imo

The light generic-shoujo first arc is there to set stage for the dark and genre-desconstructing later episodes. The ordered repetitions between the episodes in the story arcs also serve to highlight the characters' change/growth . . . that, or maybe I just like this show too much. I'm now juggling two ongoing Utena fanfics, that's how good the show is for me :D

Got this sucker pre-ordered in its Special Edition. I hadn't been this excited since hearing the latest news bits about Shin Eva.

That's interesting, I found it amazing all the way through. I actually wasn't that into the finale, as I found the character writing prior to it to be extremely fascinating and one step above most Anime. I especially like how the different arcs add layer after layer in complexity. But it's been 5 years since I've seen it.
I'd suggest trying to watch the movie. You already know the characters a little, so it shouldn't be too confusing. Also it's super beautiful and conveys the point of the show in a wonderfully visceral way.

Utena feels like those rare breed of Anime that I would make - if I had talent. What I mean to say, it speaks to me on a level very few shows do.

I'm so looking forward to the Blu-Rays.

After the Revolution Chapter 2 is set to come out. This one will focus on *drum roll* Juri and Shiori :w00t:

After the Revolution is ending with a Miki/Kozue chapter. I was hoping that Ikuhara's new anime might be a matching Utena sequel TV series, but it looks like that's not to be:

I watched it back in 2011 or 2012, and I ended up greatly preferring The Movie (Adolescence of Utena) to the TV series myself—despite the film being plenty more "out there". I need to finish Princess TuTu sometime (I reached around Episode 19 whenever I last watched it) because friends that didn't like Utena as much seemed to prefer Tutu. It certainly feels more my speed, but perhaps it's because the other Sailor Moon director, Junichi Sato, worked on it? :sweatdrop:
