Long time no see friends. Today I built the original Bandai HG Eva 01.
I'm very confused about two things.
1st, it comes with an optional entry hatch, not mentioned in the booklet. it opens akin to a double window, to the side.
Image
Is this just for easy access for your fingers or was there an Eva unit that had a hatch like this? It's been ages since I watched anything Eva but I can't recall anything like it.
2nd. Both Bandai's and Kotobukiya's Eva units feature some horribly ugly knees.
Image
I wanted to dismiss it as Kotobukiya's halfassed attempt since I built that one first, but after the HG had the same design I have to ask. Is this screen accurate?

Bonus question: do the elbows bend on the HG? That thick rubber is scary.
one two, one two...

The entry hatches aren't options. Eva-01 has a single hatch opening forward. Eva-00 and 02 has the split hatch opening sideways. Since the Evas share so many parts it's easier to have everything in the same mold. The manual labels which parts are not used for the specific kit.

As for the knee, the double joint is the only way you'll get a good range of bend in it. There's no such thing as screen accurate joints because on-screen Evas just move however they want. Bandai's rubber coated arms are at attempt at screen accuracy but at the cost of greatly, greatly sacrificing mobility. The elbows can bend, but just a bit.

They ain't actually very good; the middle's all full of raw batter, according to people online who've given it a try.

They look amazing, but I'm afraid they wouldn't stand up to the American classic. They're just so damn tasty...

^ So they painted more of her than they needed to?

I just impulse bought a DVD lot that has NGE, EoE, and D&R for $60. It's missing the third volume of NGE (I think episodes 9-11), but the guy I bought it from says it's somewhere in his house and he'll give it to me when he finds it.

All that money just so I can watch Eva on a TV that I don't even know how much longer I'll have.

Was that including shipping? Where from?
Not to rain on your parade, but it was a bit expensive... 56.60 AUD are about 4920 Yen, and that particular Eva should not go above 3500, it normally sells sealed for 3000 Yen (or about 34.50 AUD) at Mandarake...
