The LWA TV series is trying its best, although time will tell if it will actually succeed when all the episodes are out.

It's not done enough yet, but with the introduction plot elements (tm) it's now improving its chances.

I'm disappointed to see no one mention Ping Pong yet. IMO the greatest sports anime I've ever seen. Even Yuri on Ice doesn't come close.

I can't blame you for missing that quote, since it was buried over all of the arguing I feel I caused by mentioning Madoka, haha.(sorry dudes, my bad)(Rebellion still rips)

:highfive: I was thinking a couple hours ago about how the series is a masterpiece; I watched it for the first time around the 4th of July last year and now I'm thinking about it like it's my goddamn wedding anniversary or something. I place all other sports series next to Ping Pong like I place all mecha series next to NGE, they don't even come close, they may as well not even have tried, they may as well not even exist, etc.. I honestly think, like, every human should watch Ping Pong, but it's hard enough to get every anime fan to watch it. I love the animation, but one can see why it would turn people off. And I think it's a bit hard to convey its beauty unless someone sits down and just watches the 11 episodes. I remember the first time I watched it I wasn't going crazy over the first few episodes like I did with some other anime, but by the end of episode 10 the show just knocked me out.

It's easy to see though why for every one Ping Pong fan there's like 100 Yuri on Ice fans; the animation is very nice(it's like the anti Ping Pong, haha), the story and characters were very likable, and then the romance which is probably its biggest sell honestly. The series wasn't my thing, but it's made a lot of people happy so that's cool.

Yuri also had the better OP, but Ping Pong's score is top class(that scene in episode 11 with the "We Are All Alive" song playing is one of the finest music moments ever in anime).
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Heresy: the greatest sports anime is Shokugeki no Soma. Where else do you get naked apron? Or food that makes everyone a schoolgirl on a roller-coaster?

Next is Gundam Build Fighters. Because it's the sport we don't deserve, but the one we need, dammit!

I don't even watch much anime and haven't seen any full episode of that show, but Gigguk's videos on it have been downright hilarious.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I wouldn't say that anymore. Little Witch meandered a bit after the first few episodes, but by episode 13 the plot finally got going, and it's pretty good, if a bit stretched out.

I would also like to say that Constanz is best girl, but older Charion is enchantingly hot. She wears flames for good reason.

I don't think an overarching plot is a necessary requirement to elevate a show from redundancy to classic status. Especially in LWA's case, I'm really not sure if the introduction of the plot hurt the show in the end. The show definitely does not transition smoothly between the Stand Alone beginning, and the Complex later Episodes. I really love LWA, though.

What I think he meant by

is that they both are extremely competent in what they do, but fail to do anything beyond.

Another question I pondered since the trailer reveal of FLCL 2 & 3:
Can classics be tarnished by sequels, or will they just be forgotten in time? But isn't Anime an inherently too trashy medium to be remembered long enough to forget the bad sequels? Are sequels different than reboots in that regard?

That was true at the time, but the introduction of plot into the second cour of Little Witch Academia did take it up a level, even though the "believe in yourself and you can overcome anything" message was still simplistic compared with some other stories. On looking back at the earlier episodes, I felt that more of the plot was foreshadowed or prepared for than was apparent on first viewing. I'd still rate Kill la Kill higher, though.

I think Little Witch Academia is structurally far more sound than Kill La Kill. I think the biggest complaint I have about Kill La Kill is, that when viewing it for the first time I had no idea where it was supposed to go. On the other hand Kill La Kill is much more distinct from other shows than Little Witch Academia.
Watching Little Witch I always felt that this was almost as cool as Dennou Coil. Dennou Coil is an amazing children show set in a world that is so inherently interesting it's evoking intrigue on its own, while LWA's premise is basically Harry Potter meets K-On!.
Again, I adore LWA.

For the first question, do you know a single case of a sequel/reboot tarnishing the original? Because I can't remember any.

For the second question: Yes, anime is trash and so are we. Seriously though, there's no difference between anime and other mediums, other than size. But I guess that question was a joke.

I'm more curious as to what notoriety a show must have to reach the classic status, because when I think about films, Citizen Kane is apparently a classic, but I know almost nobody who's watched it. Does a classic need only a small, but dedicated group of people watching it to keep it alive past its initial release?

The best element to LWA, IMO, is that it runs to the edge of a post-magic setting.

Just like how Logan is structurally a post-Western (of mutants), LWA kept piling on the evidence of how magic was steadily becoming not simply passé, but absent in the wider world. The world closed in on Charion and her Senpai, to the point that both did things that directly harmed others, both in effort to try and reinvigorate the world's appreciation of magic (one of course being more self-serving than the other).

I honestly wished the story leaned a bit more into this idea, as it's this element that keeps it from simply being an anime Harry Potter re-hash. A world ensnared not just in the antagonism from a big bad, but by a battle of relevance.

Had the writers given themselves completely over to this idea, we would have seen world leaders use the missile strike as pretext for a crack-down. If you think about it, that probably would have been a rather rational response; the entire crisis was afterall the result of not just any random magic user, but a professor from the Witch's elite institution, who was actively whipping people up into a frenzy to feed her own machinations.

But, this may have clashed with the tone they were otherwise going for in this work, so, meh....

This may or may not be recent enough, but I nominate Durarara!!. It's a beautiful mix of urban fantasy and existentialism. It also does a pretty good job of maintaining a huge number of plot threads that all manage to intersect in a really tidy way. Quite nice...

The world leaders didn't know what caused the missile strike to happen though. Maybe that could have happened afterwards, but by then the series was over. Maybe that could be a plot point in season 2 since it looks like they want to make another season of it.
