FLCL: Seasons 2 and 3

This is for the non-Eva goings on at Gainax, both old and new.

If nothing else, I've watched the PV many times to hear the Pillows awesome music!
I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

The pillows have been pretty 'meh' the past decade. I'm hoping bring something new for the show, but it's near impossible for it to be as good as the stuff in the original FLCL.

I'm tempering my expectations.

The only song from Pillows I actually enjoyed was Little Busters. It fit so well in the scene that it started playing the moment Canti started fighting back against MM robot and kicking all kinds of ass. It was awesome.

As for new seasons I'm filled in 1/4 with impatience and the rest with dread. I just want to have it behind, like a dentist visit.

New Trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lleTz_DQTh4

FLCL2 is now named FLCL: PROGRESSIVE and starts airing June 2nd.

FLCL3 is now named FLCL: ALTERNATIVE and comes out in September.

I'm here for it. Hoping the trailer is only using similar images from the original series as a way to lure viewers in before doing something entirely new & original.

Meh, this trailer did nothing for me, it wasn't really loud or over the top like I expects FLCL to be.

Sadamoto's new artwork however is hype:

Don't have high hopes, Sadamoto art is always a good thing though.

The Japanese trailer is, IMO, miles better regarding hype:

Though, I'm a little nervous how things will turn out, myself. Weird how the theatrical release dates in Japan are reversed (Alternative first, and Progressive second) from the U.S. TV showings.

Looks like Raharu is Hayashibara which is cool (the other new "alien's" name is Jinyu, but I didn't catch which seiyuu. If it's Yamadera yet again, I'll... )

So we now have FLCL: Classic, Progressive, and Alternative. Season 4 should be called Industrial.

I’m predicting these two new seasons of FLCL will be perfectly fine and enjoyable. They won’t equal the lighting in a bottle/completely fresh experience of the original but they’ll still be solid narratives that while often retreading elements & scenes from the original will still introduce new ideas and themes with some great set pieces.

Anime Twitter will eviscerate them.

So basically, FLCL's own NTE

I'd call it that if Tsurumaki himself was involved.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."

I want to see a new Tsurumaki original anime more than I want to see a new anime by Anno, hopefully after Eva is over they'll do a bunch of TV shows or movies.

An apt comparison.

One that will especially be unavoidable in the places online where conversations usually start &/or end with "The Rebuild movies are the worst of all time! I give them a 0 out of 10 stars!"**

If anything I expect the first new season of FLCL to air in the US (Progressive) will be ripped to shreds for not being the same - I promise there will be a lot of "men" who will say it doesn't work because FLCL is "actually a story about boys going through puberty and it just doesn't work with a girl in the lead role" - and then the second new season (Alternative) may be given a pass once people accept they're not getting the exact experience they got when the first watched the original.

**Again, no one HAS to like the Rebuild films but whenever someone says "they are a disaster/ have nothing of interest/ say nothing / are the worst" then the viewer is clearly not willing to engage with the films on any level. Unless both NEW FLCL turn out to be unquestionable masterpieces of new proportions I certainly feel they will encounter the same problem.

A sequel to FLCL is an oxymoron that melts my brain. Still, this doesn't seem like your average heartless cash grab, like Sailor Moon Crystal was. The way the staff is comprised of mostly younger animators that finally have their time in the spot light, seems a lot more like the relation Diebuster has to Gunbuster than NTE has to NGE.

I agree. I never felt FLCL was a strictly masculine show anyway; Ninamori had a similar awakening to Naota after all.

(TTGL I consider masculine, and Kill La Kill I consider feminine; but I think FLCL plays both angles quite well.)

Diversity and inclusivity are the hot trends now, so anything that has a woman as a lead will be "the best thing ever". I don't think the female lead will have a negative impact on the general opinion.

Kill La Kill I consider feminine

Which is funny, because Nakashima actually said he wrote the characters like he would have written males.
Goes to show that the limit between sexes isn't that easily defined.
I felt identified quite a bit with Ryuko.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."

From what I've read is that they wrote the characters according to tropes, then swapped the genders for the lolz and for the sake of being unique.

Something that worked very well before, even if by accident, rather than design that time.
