Evangelion was probably my first anime with actual fan service in it and I've been a very happy camper in that department since. Some people like action, some people like romance, some people like eros, and on and on. Erotic enjoyment is no less valid than any other appeal -- and Evangelion actually takes it to a whole nother level by attaching it to characters you watch for their actual value as characters, rather than just their erotic appeal. If anything it's the perfect model for what entertainment containing erotic appeal should aspire to, to pair erotic appreciation with appreciation for someone as a person, rather than each staying in their own individually wrapped vacuum-sealed packages where we have "story" and "character" over here and "porn" (or just titillation) over there and never the twain shall meet.
What would you change about Evangelion?

While watching, I kept on waiting for the service, and only in retrospect realized that Misato wiggling her rump at the camera was meant to be it. It's not even like there was any of Gainax's trademark move in there, let alone the casual panchira that seemed to be in pretty much everything (recalling posters for I think it was KOR that were on display in the local SF/comics/anime store with a girl on her bike and skirt aflutter on the breeze).

I'm in this camp too. NGE seems very tame in the fan service department looking back. Maybe it's just because I'm too used to the more in-your-face fan service seen in modern anime but it seems like there's little unnecessary sexiness. Sure there's naked Rei all over the place, but 1) it has a purpose in the story and 2) it's never depicted as sexy. Looking at Rei naked feels like looking at a child naked (And no, I don't say this because she's 14). You just feel uncomfortable and I assumed that was intended. The only REAL fan service I can recall are some occasional cleavage and booty shots from Asuka and Misato. And I don't count topless Asuka in EoE since it's not really arousing as it is just sad.
Compare the fan service from the original show to the Rebuild films and you can instantly tell how much things have changed.

The fanservice in Evangelion is really tame compared to Anno's earlier work like Gunbuster and Nadia. I remember when I first saw the bath scene in the second episode of Gunbuster. I was thinking, "Ok, this is an Anno show like Evangelion, so maybe one of the girls will get out of the bath and I'll get a brief glimpse of- HOLY F***ING SHIT!!!"

I always thought Eva fanservice was pretty contained, at least after the action arc. Maybe there was a little pandering in there, but it never bothered me all that much.
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

Re:
I think many people don't get that scene, but to me, it's quite important ( yeah, seriously) . It shows what truly Shinji wants from Asuka. He wants us to believe that needs her, but the truth is he is only using that excuse to escape, because he is afraid. The hidden truth is he hurts her when they are together, and they don't understand each other, so Shinji is recurring to the only thing that doesn't hurt: jerking off, to use her like an object.
The main thing I'd change is episode 24. But how I don't know. It's difficult to say. Just make it right man, give Kaworu the justice he deserves.
Another thing I'd change is Seele. Just make them less obscure and easier to grasp. Most of their plans (especially those which Gendo is involved) don't make sense, so yeah that's very distracting...
Aah and the last thing. Change or make the relationship Gendo-Ritsuko more believable, and not so out of the blue!
The fanservice doesn't bother me in NGE. At all.

Re: What would you change about Evangelion?
What I would change is to have Asuka be less of a bitch she was often portrayed as throughout the series, maybe have her be little nicer towards people (like Shinji), and more importantly, to have her realize the error of her ways and clean up her act.
I would also make sure that those who have wronged Shinji gets the good ol' fashioned karma coming towards them. I know Gendo met some gruesome end in the movie, but I would've liked more if it was done at Shinji's hand( there was the part in the manga where Shinji imagined himself killing his own father by stabbing him with the knife. And think that it serves that bastard of a father right for all that he did.).

Re: What would you change about Evangelion?
I want to see more romance. Watching the show and seeing Rei/Asuka interact with Shinji I was just like "Come on! Kiss already!" and then Asuka did kiss Shinji, but it was a shoddy kiss cuz Asuka didn't like the natural human body function of breathing. All in all I feel like they could have done more with romance. Or at least reveal more of it to us.
And more hands. The show needs more hands.

Re: What would you change about Evangelion?
Replace episodes 25 and 26 by a EoE-inspired ending with the violence turned up to Genocyber-ish gorn levels, ending with an ultrabrutal kill 'em all halfway ep. 26. Fade to black. Then show a montage of variably older Eva characters getting themselves dressed for some chic event, a concert by a brilliant cellist named Shinji, in which scenes from Eva are projected on a large screen, showing the series was just an elaborated music video. At the same time, another montage plays superimposed showing Shinji climbing up through society, from a weird and fragile teenager to a globally successful concert cellist. Fade to credits. Then, post-credits, he gets arrested by the cops for murdering his daughter Rei in a delusional state in which he called himself Gendo and keeping her dismembered corpse in an aquarium looking suspiciously like a certain facility in Evangelion. Or perhaps not, because by this time the animation has become so deranged that the viewers don't know the difference between reality and Shinji's delusions either.
But somehow I don't think it would work as well as the real NGE, because it'd just be another ultra-violent mindfuck OVA series and would lack the impact of the original's end, precisely because the ending would involve an obviously deranged individual that the audience can't relate to.
However, EoE could be improved by having the MP Evas controlled by Shinji's and Asuka's ex-classmates, for extra breakage of course.

I would release Evangelion 3.0+1.0 tomorrow.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Re: What would you change about Evangelion?
The hosbital scene in EOE I wouldn't take it away but I would just show him re covering Asuka but then going to the bathroom offside to do the same thing and still feel disgusted at himself because I think it has the same effect and takes away none of the impact.

What you are describing is close to a prior version of the script.

I'd say the movie version has more impact. Though it is very uncomfortable...

It has staying power because it's secretly an alchemical formula and a commentary on the interplay of sexuality and violence and an attack on gender roles and and an allegory for the failures and selfishness of the cold war generation, but it's the psychotic redheaded German and her teasing flashes that got me there. Since someone elected to bump this thread and I saw this almost six year old post I'd like to update it by adding that I will also be a red headed waifu in shipper valhalla, only my tits will be bigger than everyone elses. Also, catgirls. Oh, and a ball pit, and one of those big green egg grills and all the barbecue you can eat, both pulled meat and dry rub, with a great abundance of sauces and cornbread and fixin's.
Thank you and goodnight.
