Wiki-Forum Image Integration System

I'm happy to announce that we now have a new wiki image system which integrate resizable wiki images into forum posts in a way which I hope will be as intuitive as possible. Hopefully this will make the integration of images into forum posts as simple as possible, so that thousands of words can be said without the pain of using image hosting services.

The system is called using a new [wkimg] tag. The name of the wiki image must be specified, along with the desired width. For example, to use the wiki images hosted on these wiki pages in forum posts...
http://wiki.evageeks.org/File:Reichu_gendo_not-bad.jpg
http://wiki.evageeks.org/File:M25_Ritsuko_Liar.jpg

...you need only use the following code, which produces the images below(resized to a desired width), which when clicked on bring you to the relevant wiki page.

Code: Select all

[wkimg width=200]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=300]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=200]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=300]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=200]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=300]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=200]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=300]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]

Leaving out the width tag, or else specifying width=0 gives the image in its original dimensions. Note the images also work with the existing max imagewidth system

Code: Select all

[wkimg]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]Reichu gendo not-bad.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg]M25 Ritsuko Liar.jpg[/wkimg]

Note that images cannot be resized beyond their original dimensions. If the width specified is over that of the original image, the size will default to the original one.

Code: Select all

[wkimg width=100]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=200]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=100]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=200]01 C048.jpg[/wkimg]

Here are some more examples

Code: Select all

[wkimg width=100]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg] [wkimg width=200]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg] [wkimg width=300]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=100]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg] [wkimg width=200]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg] [wkimg width=300]22_C395_asuka-sink.jpg‎[/wkimg]

Code: Select all

[wkimg width=100]01 C039b big.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=200]01 C039b big.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=100]01 C039b big.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg width=200]01 C039b big.jpg[/wkimg]

Note that the system is still more or less in "beta" and there may be some bugs to iron out. For now, it seems ready to be used in discussions. Just try not to overdo things! If you need a list of images on the wiki you can start here

For now, this thread is available to anyone at any time who wishes to test the system. I'd like if people could test out the system here so we can see how it copes under pressure.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions in this thread. Happy image posting.

So is this going to be listed with the other forum-tags like bold or quote? So far I didn't see it there.

Do you mean below the subject filed when you post? I don't think I'll go that far. I think posters will need to find out about this tag here or by quoting posts.

I went ahead and added it to our bbcode faq:

faq.php?mode=bbcode

Not that anyone ever reads it anyways.

Wiki image code is a bit flakey. It's causing internal server erros. I've moved this thread for the moment until I can work out a way of optimising the code (Currently it's calling too much code every time). Hold on on using wkimg too much for now.

EDIT: The problems have been fixed and the system updated. Page loads should be much quicker now.

After many hours extensive coding, rigorous testing and analysis, the image system has been streamlined and further improve. There is now no need to specify the width attribute for an image. Leaving it out gives the same results as with width=0, i.e. it give the image in its default size.

So the following pieces of code produce exactly the same image.

Code: Select all

[wkimg]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]

[wkimg]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]
[wkimg width=0]Aoba sloppy work.jpg[/wkimg]

Anyone know what's going on with the wkimg and code tags being broken? Any chance of the first one especially getting fixed?

They're broken because they were additions to the previous forum software that never got added to the current software. I wasn't aware of it (or had forgotten) until now.

Any chance of a fix?

(Also, why did the old code tag get messed up like that? It didn't have the colon and the 1 in there before...)

The apparently random ":####" appearing on various tags is an artifact of the translation program that took the old phpBB2 database into the new forum version. For the moment I've been manually fixing those as I see them.

Is a fix impossible? I've been reading some old topics and I found a lot of broken links to the Wiki. It's not too much of a pain to manually find the images but it's not ideal of course.

The trouble is that while the name of the file e.g. Aoba sloppy work.jpg can map to the page managing it by prefixing it with

Code: Select all

https://wiki.evageeks.org/File:
the actual image is at some location like

Code: Select all

https://wiki.evageeks.org/images/[number]/[another number]/Aoba sloppy work.jpg
. It needs some actual code, either on server or in the page to get at that, and nobody has picked it up as a task.
