Re: Last Movie You Watched
Galaxy Quest 1999
You know there is nothing bad I could ever say about this movie its just so funny and clever and I love how it embraces fandoms and conventions with both hands and delights in its piss take of sci fi meta while still being its own original universe and it also get extra credit for showing the loyal fanbase as helpful and helping to save the day rather than mocking and taking the piss like so many films do when its comes to fandom. Like when I first saw this at cinema I thought Sigourney Weaver would never work in this role but she's nails it and goes with it completely and its hilarious. Sam Rockwell also does not get enough credit in this film as he's one of the funniest characters in it and I love how he is the fans internal voice showing that this thing is terrifying and that's gross and did you guys ever watch the show? What was sad was seeing Alan Richman as he has now passed away and his performance in this film is so amazing.
My only not pick and it is very miner is I've never quite been able to wrap my head around the idea that the Thermians not understanding entertainment as writing and plays are normally the under lying basis of a any culture. Hence I have a theory that Mathesar and his people must be an off shoot of there race which the film states have been wiped out and are now creating new culture and literature from scratch. Also though they may look like adults they might in fact just been teenagers hence there innocence and difficulty understanding depiction and lies because it was not taught to them as children by there parents.

^Galaxy Quest is gold.
I just got home from seeing Colossal. It was definitely different, and not at all what I was expecting, but I liked it a lot. It was actually a much more serious film than the trailers let on to be, and there are a couple moments of tension between the main characters that is uncomfortably realistic at times. At its core, the movie is actually about alcoholism and abusive relationships, and goes in depth with some of the power plays that occur between men and women in different relationships. I very much enjoyed it, and would love to add it to my collection of sci-fi and monster movies.

That's not what I expected from the trailers. At all.

Really, though. I was expecting an action comedy with kaiju and giant robots, and instead got something that was way more real than I anticipated. Lots of character drama. Kinda sounds like this anime I know of.

Genetic Noble Angel? I've been meaning to see that.

Went for the theatrical cut of Fifty Shades Darker.
Definitely accomplished it's goals of being a better installment than it's predecessor. The Christian/Ana chemistry was radiant; idk why critics say it wasn't there; Christian's backstory is developed very nicely, and it wouldn't be a review without talking about the sex scenes which is what people were badmouthing the first film for having an utter lack of but they went all out on this one and it's extremely fulfilling.

Logan. Pretty much the mutant version of Road to Perdition, but it also causes mantears.
Re: Last Movie You Watched
Arrival. Best sci fi of the 2010's. Loved how it took a little linguistics, physics, and philosophy and spun it into something fascinating.

Re: Last Movie You Watched
Can't believe how many people into sci-fi seemed to have missed Arrival when it came out last autumn... As a former translator, I guess I was an ideal target market for the movie and facebook and YouTube did their job.
I did create a thread (second page now) and I felt all alone in it.
Even worse was my thread on Ted Chiang, the author of the short story on which the movie is based. Excellent speculative fiction.
Would like to hear more on Arrival, it has the "we gotta save the world" flaw, but it's a solid 8/10 for me, where Contact would be 9/10 and Close Encounters probably 10/10.

I don't think it was marketed very well.
Arrival, I think is the kind of movie that belongs on digital distribution. The theater model is shriveling up into multiplexes showing shared universe movies.

It actually did pretty well. It made $198 million on a $50 million budget.

Re: Last Movie You Watched
ARRIVAL did perfectly fine in theaters. Intelligent cinema tends to burn bright but not long in public consciousness. We're too easily distracted. But ARRIVAL played to sold out theaters in my neighborhood for two weeks. It's also a film MADE for the big screen & if it had come out as a Netflix release it would have had it's two day run & then forgotten.
The problem is internet discourse usually centers around extended universes because it's fun to hypothesize what will happen next.
Great cinema still exists in the theaters & people who care go. There just isn't much to say online about a film like ARRIVAL or THE LOST CITY OF Z except that they're amazing.

Re: Last Movie You Watched
I've watched Death Note: Light up the NEW World.
This movie is set 10 years after the events of the first Live Action Death Notes. I've never seen the LA-prequels, but I've read the Manga and watched the Anime, so I had no problems following the plot of this version. The reason I wanted to watch this tribute movie, was how extremely stylish it looked. It has the cold, bleak, metallic aesthetic of a Fincher movie, but there's super stylish little details in shot composition, clothing, and other props that makes it all just feel a whole lot slicker than many other films . Also, the Shinigami looked amazing and have been integrated very well. The plot is standard Death Note fare, the leads are quirky, older characters make cameos, there's plenty of dying and contrived "this was my plan all along!". It works perfectly fine and has momentum, but overall I'd say it's hardly above mediocre. There's lots of weird call backs to the original Death Note, mimicking the bigger twists of its Godfather, but play out subverted enough to not feel too tired.
This won't win any prices, but overall the slick presentation elevates the ok script to a 6.5/10
While by far not my favorite franchise I have sufficient nostalgia for Death Note to visit it once in a while and be entertained by it. So I'm looking forward to how the Netflix version turns out.

Finished watching Atlantis: The Lost Empire. An underrated gem in a world overtaken by Disney musicals generating more box office and also one of my personal favorites. Props to Rourke being a despicable Disney villain so vile that you feel so darn good when he gets his comeuppance.

"Carrots. Why is it always carrots? I didn't even eat carrots?"
A far more entertaining & visually impressive movie than people give it credit for. I also have a real fondness for Treasure Planet, took one of my first major girlfriends to that movie as our first date. Success.

Re: Last Movie You Watched
Over memorial day weekend, I saw two movies: They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and No Country For Old Men. The former, though it depressed me a lot, has become one of my favorite films, possibly in the top five. The struggle of different people striving their way through an endless dance contest to get out of the great depression is heartbreaking. It also came across to me as a very socialist movie, in how it portrayed how the rich capitlist-like-people owning it was treating the contestants like shit considering all their different struggles. If you can make it through without feeling sad at the end, or at have some form of sympathy for any of the characters, then you were probably born without a heart.
No Country For Old Men I also really loved. The second official Coen Brothers film I've watched in my life thus far (The first being Fargo, which I also really loved). It had a slow pace that felt necessary to build it's tension and characters, as well as some great development of the character through their journey all relating to about $5,000,000 in illegal drug money. There isn't much I can say about it except that I can't describe it well enough to make it exciting. I'll say for my final thoughts that if you have the patience, watch it.
