I've got such mixed feelings about this film as I love the Ghost In The Shell movies as well as the stand alone complex and 2nd GIG. One part of me wants this to do well purely because it will get people interested in the anime and they'll finally click that not all anime is porn/hentai and that there is anime out there for adults which is deep, complex and thought provoking and this in turn might help bring more revenue to the Asian market.

Then the other side of my brain kicks in and I really dislike that they picked Scarlett Johansson to play the mayor in my view she is not cut out for this part and I see her just playing it like black Widow which is to stand around look good and have very little character depth and the Mayor is a very deep character who questions her own humanity and who has a memories of crushing her dolls as a child because her first cyborg body was so strong. I personally feel that pacific rims Rinko Kikuchi should have been given this role as she a far better actress in my view.

Then there's the other issue which is that if this is successful its just going to Hollywood steam role over every anime out there because they know the Marvel train is slowing down and there desperate for there next pay check and I don't like the idea of seeing things like Evangelion or Akira put to screen as they could really ruin them and take away the important messages they are trying to give. Also all of the anime movies put to screen before this have been utter failures because Hollywood has ignored the source material and I will be very surprised if this doesn't turn out the same but I guess only time will tell...

Don't worry about Hollywood "ruining" franchises. Japan already did GITS:Arise, and you could arguably say the same about NTE. The original will never go away, and if you've got a hit on your hands, it's only natural to make money out of it.

That is very true and a very good point, sadly I had the misfortune of watching Arise not long ago and yeah your right that was a terrible remake though I did hear that Arise sucked because the original creator who did the movies and the first two series wasn't in charge hence the new guy for some reason thought he'd make the Mayor look like a little child and take away her really interesting back story, throw the team together in a fast paced way and some how turned the franchise in to the Matrix.

His worst sin in my view though was having the mayor get hacked in one episode yet not giving the audience enough tip bits to figure that out and fully expecting them to catch on to despite that the episode was both awkward and really jarring. So instead of the viewer going oh that's a really smart twist at the end there left going what the hell that makes no sense what so ever...

The movies and Stand Alone Complex were produced by different teams with different directors.

If you haven't, watch Lucy (2014).
I just watched it for the first time last night and was genuinely surprised how much range Scar showed.
She goes from being kinda of a slightly irresponsible casual party girl WAY out of her depth to a cold calculating living badass computer basically.
There is a moment midway when she is talking to a loved one and she is describing in detail how her mind & sense of reality has changed and it clearly slowly dawns on her how she is loosing her humanity and won't be able to connect with the person she is talking to for much longer.
I am completely sold on her in this role.

I might be wrong but I think there blending the first movie and the second series 2ng Gig story line as there was another boy who was ported to cyborg child's body along with mayor and he was the second prototype and when he grew up did a lot of terrorist actions, his name is Hideo Kuze. Though in the series his mouth no longer moved as he had not had enough repairs done. http://villains.wikia.com/wiki/Hideo_Kuze

SPOILER: Show
Image
Like the Mayor he is very good at hand to hand.

I'm going to peg this down to movie makers being terribad at putting trailers together nowadays.

Although the "You had a family" line makes me worry. We already got a RoboCop remake.
Amarantos - an NGE AU, beginning with Asuka, Shinji, and a garden. Take a look. Couldn't hurt.

I'm pretty hyped. This, and GOTG2 are my most anticipated upcoming films. I like the effects they're doing with the Major's swift movements during action scenes. Can't wait. ^_^

^ if I wanted to watch those movies Id just watch those movies. Why should those ideas being Ghost in the Shell when none of them are Ghost in the Shell?

At this point all I can do is hope it doesn't do too well that we don't have to deal with other terrible anime to live action adaptations that will no doubt happen if this movie makes money.

Do you want to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Shinji ikari? DO YOU CHADDY!?

Except they very much are "Ghost in the Shell". It's only natural to compare things based on similarities, whether it be genre, aesthetic, etc, and there's nothing wrong with having these comparisons. Especially if you're trying to introduce somebody to a franchise, it's easy to use other popular titles as points of reference.

I must say, your level of negativity regarding this movie is incredible. It seems as though you actively devote work and energy to dwelling on it (and other going ons in Hollywood). Relax. You're too young to be a bitter old curmudgeon. Even bad movies can be enjoyed.

Well yeah, that would be a really cool idea actually, I would have preferred a young Tobey Maguire or Jake Gyllenhaal though. Does Joseph Gordon-Levitt have blue eyes or would he have to have contacts? He's got the brown hair, white skin, and scrawny stature.

Or maybe it could do well and blaze the way to other awesome anime adaptations. Or to be realistic, some good and some bad, just like everything else in life, and indeed in anime itself. The problem I find with your PoV is not so much the pessimism, but the presumption that it matters very much at all.

One thing is the mysterious antagonist now very clearly looks like some iteration of Kuze so I'll just post this in case anyone's into the original G. I probably shouldn't be rewatching GITS:SAC right now because 2nd Gig's terrific plot is one thing that looks like it'll probalby end up on the cutting room floor.

As for that:
SPOILER: Show
Child abuction and false memories were a major plot in the '06 movie Solid State Society and FALSE memories of a family a minor one, lest we forget, in the '95 movie. People expecting this trope to be played straight may be setting themselves up to be dunked on in the most tremendous fashion ;-)

This is even alluded in the collider interview posted upthread but trailers are commercials, not samples. I'll have to clamp down on my rampant second-guessing while I remember that.

This is slightly tangential but probably relevant info to some people in this thread: Anchor Bay's recent BD release of GitS: SAC is a broken shit show worthy of recall. Just look at the reviews. All things considered, it might be the worst western anime release ever. Do not waste your money and buy it.

That's disappointing. The special edition DVD releases were quite good, including lots of neat extras and a collector's tin for the set. It'd be great to see a BD release get that sort of treatment.

From the BD reviews:

AUDIO IS BROKEN! If you watch it dubbed, it will randomly cut in with Japanese audio. NO JOKE! There’s a spot where Batou spoke English and Japanese AT THE SAME TIME!

I didn't even know this was possible.
