^ although Asuka is very emotional when she says it (I personally think she's having a joke by pretending to be defensive/indignant)
Niemals! Er ist ein sehrberer(?)** mensch
Another option I just thought of is [tongue-in-cheek] maybe the stepmother just asked how often Shinji leaves the toilet seat up!!

So much is clear, as always she uses it to rile "Baka Shinji."

That is now undeniably canon, and no one is allowed to question it.

Credit to Hideaki Anno for making Evangelion a multicultural universe but Asuka's "German" is my only real flaw with classic NGE. German is my third language & Yuko Miyamura's phonetic performance is truly something alien.
Equally what the heck Koichi Yamadera's Kaji "English" in 2.0. I've watched that performance with subtitles on a good dozen times & still think the subtitles are half accurate & half guessing.

I realize this is a separate conversation but until reading this thread I didn't pick up on her calling her stepmom 'mother' or 'mom' . I'm surprised Asuka even does that, she strikes me as the type that would be stubborn about referring to her that way. (I'm sure this has been discussed before though)

I could do that, but I really don't wanna reactivate my Netflix Account because of it. If I could get a hold of the soundsnippet tho I'd be happy to help!

I think one of the DVD booklets mentioned what she was actually supposed to be saying.
I wanted to try harvesting the rice

I wanted to hold Tsubame more

I wanted to stay together forever with the boy I like

The DVD booklet in my tin box release says:
In her phone conversation with her stepmother Asuka speaks German, the contents of which are roughly as follows:

"Hello? Mother? We just finished eating. What about you? You want me to introduce him? Please, of course not. He's not sociable. Uh-huh, uh-huh. Really, wow, I didn't know. That's great."
"I don't have anything to say, either. Talk to you again later. I'm hanging up, okay? Well, goodnight!"

This dialogue was not written in the script, and was left up to Yuko Miyamura, who played Asuka.

Sounds like Mrs Langley asked about that friendly male roommate that answered the phone.

In any case it seems like they couldn't afford more than google translate at the time

Well, if so, here is the extract, audio only:

I won't attempt to transcribe the German, let alone translate it.

Thanks a lot, I really don't wanna pay like 10€ for this short clip when I know I won't be watching anything else in the near future, lol.
So here it is!

Hallo Mutter!
Ach ja, wir haben uns schon so lange nicht mehr gehört!
Danke gut! Und wie geht's dir?
Hahaha, soll ich ihn dir mal vorstellen?
Ach niemals, er ist ein Einzelkämpfer!
Hahaha, ja, ja! Wirklich?!
Ach so, das ist aber toll!
Fantastisch!
...
Hoffentlich wird es nicht regnen.
Ich muss bald schlafen gehen. Tschüss Mutter, Gute Nacht!

I will keep the translation close, as to not fuck up the quite stiff and stilted vibe, but out of all the versions I've heard, this is by far the best, while she's clearly not native speaking in. heavy American accent, her intonation and the writing itself are a lot closer to what it sounds like when a German speaking person would talk, kudos to that! I especially have to applaud the extremely faithful usage of "Ach" in all of its forms, lol.

Hello Mother!
Oh yeah, we haven't heard from each other for a long time!
Thanks, I'm doing well! And how are you?
Hahaha, should I introduce you to him?
Oh never, he is a lone wolf/ lone fighter!
Hahaha, yes, yes! Really?!
Oh I see, that is great, (though)!
Fantastic!
....
Hopefully it won't rain.
I need to go to sleep soon. Bye, mother, Good Night!

I'd perhaps translate Einzelkämpfer more along the lines of "commando soldier", since that is a particular position in the German army, roughly equal to the US Rangers, depending on if the line is meant literally or figuratively, not really sure about that myself based on the way the line was delivered

I mean yeah, but "commando soldier" is not expressing the intended meaning of someone doing things their own way.

Yes, that is definitely true, but that line always sounded to me less like "er ist ein Einzelkämpfer!", and instead "er ist ein Einzelkämpfer!?", a kind of "wait what, that guy is doing military things now/has always done it but never told us?", the kind of bewilderment without actually being surprised, a "huh, guess it makes sense in retrospect"

I realize that this is a very particular way of reading that line and might just be because of the accent, but it is the first thing that sprung to my mind when I heard it

I mean, ok, lol. I admit to not having known about that rank at all, so my reading immediately jumped to my prior suggestion of meaning "lone wolf". But let's think about it... Who in the world of Evangelion would she talk about who actually incorporates (is that the correct verb?) that specific German military rank?

The obvious connection would be someone from Euro Nerv/German army, since she still is part of that, or at least was
