Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
So, resuming our normal programming, this is the episode it'll be based on. It looks like the least political take on GitS:SAC 2nd I could have imagined. The Guardian review is just based on the trailer but it looks like they're reading the signals right.

And leaving aside politics, on which I know we disagree, what are your grounds for saying that?

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
I confess I am a little embarrassed about rising to a political provocation when I've been trying my hardest to drag this topic away from "cisjapaneseness".
Maybe people are avoiding it because reading about the actual episode it's based on is a 'spoiler' so to put it discretely.
I don't because I've seen that episode though. The series it's based on was pretty political but the episode in question was just about the Major's backstory, which is what the trailer is emphasising too. I guess I was more optimistic about how political the film was gonna be but it looks like the Teh Nuardiag is reading the tea leaves right - it's an action/thinkpiece with cyperpunk society as a more a of good old Blade-Runner style backdrop.

Digibro Gives His Take On The Trailer.

Love him or hate him. He does make some good points.
And before you jump on me he barely mentions that whitewashing controversy.

^I think he does make a valid argument on how they may have drifted too far towards The Matrix/Blade Runner dystopia rather than the more mundane setting of the film and anime series. The glimpses we get of the city in the trailer certainly reminded me much more of Blade Runner than the original film, at any rate.
His arguments about the action scenes being too fantastical is compelling, as well.

^^ my achronological response
I've liked what Digibro does about EVA so if there's any drama about anything else I'm going in blind.
16:00 ‘now obviously i’m extrapolating a lot from a trailer’ Maybe, his comments are very valid but I'm not sure I agree. By that I mean he picks some precise points of critical evidence which is commendable. It's more than his extrapolations are strongly based around the contrasts with the '95 movie. (I notice he only mentions Mamoru Oshii by name).
8:00 If the morph suit is a compromise between pragmatic prudery and 'authentic' nudity then...okay? My only objection is it looks a little goofy to me.
9:00 Damn he's right about the gitsac geisha opening - The Swat team approach is very different.
7:00 & 17:15 -I think holographic adverts are indeed 'scenes from better movies' (I enjoyed re-watching Akira to post this)
12:00 Okay this is where he loses me - as in confuses me. He accredits Gits with primier sci-fi violence but disowns wall-running. Maybe the genre that is cyberpunk allows us to validate certain kinds of woo and not others but he is making it seem a little arbitrary. Yes Gits:SAC's violence was very aesthetically different but I don't know if I believe it's 'alien to GitS' or even cyberpunk as a genre. Likewise he disowns the holograph ads by saying it wasn't a comementery on the future of society but I think cyberpunk has always been about Mega-Corporate power. He makes a lot out of visual detail for what seems to me to make an exaggerated argument to 'inauthenticity' to the '95 movie very specifically.
15:58 This is the bit where he goes on about it's a 'wrong' version of the Puppet master. Doesn't mention Kuze by name. I know I've quoted this a lot already but I guess it really does bear repeating:
I have posted upthread about the GitS wiki for the episode that it's based on if you want a taste. I'm less optimistic than I was (I think the Guardian 'extrapolated from the trailer' rightly that this doesn't look like it'll pick up GitS:SAC's politics, which would be incredible) but it looks like it's got a solid base for being something interesting and even a little thoughtful.
[lost my timestamp] ‘i don’t know why anyone thinks it will be a good movie’ Simply, I think it will be based on GitS;SAC 2nd Gig and GitS;SAC 2nd Gig was pretty great. I hope Evamonkey is right because the music in that trailer was terrific so it looks like it has the makings of a generally solid film. Cribbing from Akira and Blade Runner is hardly a recipe for a bad film.
tl;dr: He looks like he's got a solid case that it won't be the '95 movie and won't even be what it makes it important. But there is a great deal of good in the GitS-'verse outside the brilliance of the first movie. He makes a tangible case it messes up some more generally important things that make the GitS-verse special and different too though. You can also say that about the new Beastie Boys Star Wars movies and a lot of people like them. However I am both more optimistic that it will be have a certain kind of cyberpunk authenticity as well being a general quality movie. Like, I get if '95 GitS is your deal but '08 GitS:SAC was mine. I'm bullish.

The big thing we are doing here is that we’re not necessarily doing an origins backstory, but we are addressing her sense of self and resolving how she defines herself in terms of memories. That’s one of the main thrusts in the story. Inspired by that episode of Affection in Second Gig. It’s bits and pieces of those mixed together.”

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
Regarding the 'morph suit', rewatching the original film it is clear at some points that Motoko isn't actually nude when going invisible- she is actually wearing some sort of thermoptic skintight suit (albeit a flesh-coloured one that's so tight that her nipples are visible beneath it). There's clearly a thin neckline between her skin and the suit. During the climatic battle the entire suit rips off due to strain and the fabric is clearly distinct from the 'flesh' beneath as it tears away. Although to be fair it does look more goofy in live-action that it did when animated.

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
Never felt it was goofy or out of place in the trailer, incredibly glad they kept it in, never dared dream it would happen in this evil "sexy equals objectification" era we live in.
Made me absolutely giddy that they were being so faithful from a visual standpoint, same with the shelling sequence & the reuseage/remix of the original score.
Extremely excited for this movie.
Gonna probably re watch the original and then set off watching the rest of the franchise for the first time this weekend.

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
I don't think she's wearing a thermo-optic suit, but her body - looking like a puppet, because she is artificially made. Overall, I think it could look worse - it's obvious, it'll be a "normal" action-flick. But it still might be a good one.

^ It might share the same aesthetics of violence as a normal action flick - digibro is clear and precise there - but I don't think it will be just a normal action flick. The trailer looks like they're committed to the plotline from the episode Kusanagi's Labyrinth/Afffection in 2nd Gig metnioned in the collider.com interview.
I will bet ¥€$ to donuts it will be thinky weepy with sudden outburts of dramatic violence in a world transformed...yada yada

Shortly after losing the last team Kusanagi is unexpectedly hacked, leaving her in a seemingly empty street with no communication links. Kusanagi seeks to find a way to escape the hack, which leads her to wander into another part of town. Here, she happens across a shop that stores people external memories, and learns of the story of two child cyberbodies carefully preserved in the shop.

I'm not gonna lie, that poster looks pretty bitchin'.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"
^ indeed.
Started reading the Manga for the 1st time, it's kinda blowing my mind how different it is from the 95 film.
Most obviously the faces can be hyper exaggerated and silly at times while in the 95 film they are deadpan & cold on everyone.
And the tone shifts sharply, many of the deaths are brutal & gory and then some slapstick crap will happen like Batou bombing Aramaki's car and it's played as a joke.
The Major is honestly kind of a unlikable cunt in this. There is a moment when she basically tells a kid who has been in a torturous brainwashing facility to grow some balls & help himself and then she fucks off abandoning him. Bitch, the kid is like 12, he can't fight guards in mecha suits no matter if he has the will to do so or not.

Still looking great. Altho I think her decloaking is looking worse, they are overdoing that effect I think.

So is Togusa not in this? He's my favorite character. I'll be disappointed.

Togusa's in it. He's being played by a dude named Chin Han.

Oh good. I just saw who I presume to be Aramaki with a revolver and assumed they rolled those two characters into one... somehow.
I hope he has his Mateba.
