Viewed part 1 of the live action Attack on Titan movie. The sheer horror complete with blood and gore was on overload during the first act but gave way to breathtaking action that made me wonder why I didn't get into the anime sooner. I did think that once Mikasa was back in Sarah Connor mode, she gave off the same bitchy impression that Sarah Connor exuded in Terminator 2. Kind of made it a bummer to sit through but Eren in Titan mode more than made up for that with insane Titan on Titan walloping.

Where can I see it?

I bought it on DVD from WalMart, if that helps.

Watched JACKIE. I enjoyed the movie. Truly what makes it soar is Natalie Portman giving her all & the luscious cinematography shot on gorgeous 16mm.

I've recently been on an Aardman binge. Good god I love Aardman.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists was hilarious, and one of the best looking stop-motion films out there. Excellent voice work and the typical Aardman sense of humour (the monkey's speech cards being particularly amusing). Definitely worth a watch.

Arthur Christmas is in CGI, and the character designs stray a bit far from the usual Aardman style into the generic kid's movie territory. Thus concludes everything negative I have to say about this movie. It was just a good, fun movie, and above all it was a Christmas movie that actually managed to be original. Once again, stellar voice work (Hugh Laurie was one of my favourites in this film) and to be fair on the CGI it did look good, and most of it would have been impossible to do in stop-motion anyway. Overall definitely one of the best Christmas movies out there.

Flushed Away was also CGI but kept the more traditional Aardman designs. It's probably one of their weaker films but it was still great- Ian McKellen was brilliant as The Toad. The CGI looked a bit primitive but nothing awful, and the slugs were hilarious.

MOANA

Pros:
The animation looks beautiful, you don't really see many movies taking place on the open seas. So to see a movie that can animate the water this beautiful is gorgeous. There was this one scene where I saw the magma hitting the seawater, and I could have sworn it was real.

The Rock as Maui easily steals the show. He has the best song and a lot of charm. A big dumb football jock with a genuine vulnerability when he needs it. The rock actually has talent here.

Moanas a pretty decent likeable protagonist as well. She's not uber-competent, and Maui has to teach her the ropes (literally) before she can really become a hero in her own right. and the friendship between her and Maui seems genuine. like a big brother little sister relationship.

Maui's tatoos easily get the most laughs out of the audience I was with. There was also a character in the movie that reminded me a lot of the magic carpet in Aladdin, the way it had so much personality with just a few gestures.

Cons:
Uninteresting villains. The crab guy doesn't get nearly as much screentime as he should have.

Most of the songs aren't that good in my opinion. 'You're welcome' and 'Away Away' are the best, but the rest were a chore to listen to.

There were some really out of place fourth wall breaks that

The story was okay, but that's the thing. It's just okay. I wasn't expecting the lion king, but this seemed more like a passable movie than one that actually took risks.

All in all 6.8-7/10

The Rock actually has talent everywhere.

^ yeah but everywhere else is just the Rock. Here he's actually a character other than just "the Rock".

Ray: "...fourth wall breaks that" -- that WHAT? Paragraph clips off.

I meant to say they seemed out of place in the movie. 4th wall breaks work in a movie like Aladdin, but not in Moana.

I watched Tora! Tora! Tora! with a friend today. An excellent movie that portrayed both sides well IMO. Now I'm dreading watching "Pearl Harbor" though...

La La Land is going to win Best Picture at this year's Oscars for the following reasons:


1. It's a high-profile musical with a great soundtrack, the likes of which hasn't been seen at the very least since Chicago. Being able to pull of a musical this good in this particular era of film is a huge accomplishment in and of itself.

2. It has a very Old-Hollywood throwback feel, probably because it's a musical. Simple story, Likeable characters. FEELS out the ass, especially towards the end.

3. It glorifies the entertainment industry in the sense that it's about the typical journeys that aspiring performers undertake in order to make it big in Hollywood.

4. Shot on film.

5. Damien Chazelle has proven himself to be a wunderkind with his directorial abilities. Whiplash was no fluke. Direction is lively and energetic with plenty of truly creative musical sequences.

And Finally:

6. The Rocky Effect is in full play here. None of the other potential nominees are feel-good films. And in the current socio-political climate, that could play into La La Land's favor, even though the other nominees could be considered just as good if not better.

I saw two movies yesterday:

Green Room was a solid thriller. Great tension, a tight script with very good pacing; the only complaint is that I wish it was better developed with the characters, even if they were engaging enough for me to care about them.

Edge of Seventeen was a typical coming-of-age film; a descent one though, but nothing special. Hailee Steinfeld was good; the romance between her and Erwin was nicely developed, and the script threw in some good humor in the mix (The mc telling Erwin that he reminds her of being a old man; the teacher thanking the mc after saying that he gets paid very little (As an insult)). Nothing I wouldn't seek out again, but I am happy I watched it. I do hope Steinfeld keeps building momentum. It feels like I haven't heard anything from since True Grit and her awful pop music career.

30 Days of Night for probably the thirtieth time since it's release in '08. Still my favorite vampire movie.

Over Christmas I watched Mary Poppins. Surprisingly good movie, especially for its age. Julie Andrews was absolutely wonderful, and Dick Van Dyke's "Cockney" was hilarious.

Watched the Angry Birds movie on Netflix. It was funny as hell, lots of sarcasm and references for the adults who went to see the movie with thier kids (including a reference to the Shining) and plenty of fun plays on words (such as "flock my life") also ha a great soundtrack (including "Rock You Like a Hurricane")

Needless to say I wasn't expecting much, but it certainly impressed me and was worth a laugh with so many SNL alums in the cast.

^It had some very clever, subtle political commentary. .. if you know what to look for.

Begotten
...okay, what in the acutal fuck did I just watch? I...I don't really know how to process this one, it went right to eleven on the "weird-shit-o-meter". Neat visual style, however, though a bit grainy.

Eraserhead
This actually makes about the sixth or seventh viewing since first seeing it..and yet, I still can't explain what I saw. But I'm enthralled all the same.

Jacob's Ladder
...I think the word "harrowing" pretty much covers it. Love this movie, though it might be a little heavy if you're feeling depressed.

The Man Who Fell to Earth
Really neat film, but ends on a rather down note. Proof that Bowie wasn't just a great musician, but a solid actor too.

Videodrome
Just plain good Cronenberg, not much else I can say here...well, except "all hail the new flesh", of course.

Got done watching End of Evangelion...and yup, this after my fourth viewing of it in this horrible year, it's still my favorite movie of all time. I can't tell you how much it helped me - such originality brought forth by scenes that make me break down in tears of all different emotions. It's a reminder to me of how far I've come when dealing with my depression, and I'm so glad I have it in my life.
