Not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but just curious as to what classes/jobs you think would suit or appeal to the main cast of Eva?

Shinji would be a traditional reluctant hero with a balanced one-handed sword.
Asuka would be the highly offensive one, at the expense of her defense, and would probably dual wield.
Rei would be the defender, offering support to her comrades as a paladin, or she may possibly a mage of some kind; black or red mage?
Mari would be the archer, keeping her distance and providing support from afar.
Kaworu would be a blue mage, learning the moves of his enemies in order to use against them.

I may work out the rest later, but this is what I have for now.

Gendo could be the annoying guide character, except all he would ever say is "Get in the fucking robot, Shinji."
"That's not it at all. Trying to go on living is different than trying to escape fear. Those who acted in order to live until the end, without losing themselves to fear and what was happening around them, are the ones who survived properly. We don't know what "God" is thinking, but both fortune and misfortune are thrust upon people. Even so, people exist within a domain that is theirs in which to act."

Oh boy, this sounds like fun!

(Note: This isn't based on any one MMO in particular as I don't play MMOs. These are based primarily on stereotypical RPG classes, with a hint of Darkest Dungeon as it's the only class-based game I've ever really played.)

Shinji would probably be basic sword-and-board fighter, jack-of-all-trades-but-master-of-none and all that. He'd be fairly proficient at what he does but would be constantly put down by other players for "not playing properly".

Asuka would be a carefully researched, game-breaking wizard character who uses a particular combination of poorly balanced spells/abilities/items to curbstomp everything. She is thus convinced she is the best player in the party...until a patch rolls out that fixes the issues with the spells and stuff, leaving her pretty useless and very angry.

Rei would be a healer/cleric with some offensive capability. She'd be very good at providing heals to the right people at the right time, but of course Asuka would complain that she wasn't getting healed enough (read: all the time). She'd pretty much be the party carry.

Touji would be a two-handed heavy-armour berserker/tank type character. He'd be honourably leaping to the front to spare the rest of the party damage, and naturally going down fairly quickly as this MMO doesn't really reward selfless heroics. Poor Touji.

Kensuke would be a ranged fighter (be it with muskets, crossbows or whatever) who has carefully tuned his character to be effective in most scenarios whilst being future-proofed against potentially crippling updates. Whilst his hails of arrows/volleys of musket fire are useful enough, his true value comes down to the fact that he follows the dev logs and update schedules and has done a lot of experimentation/research/nerdy shit into the game itself, thus meaning he can keep the rest of the party informed about what's effective, what's not and what the next update will bring.

Hikari would be a bard, providing buffs to the party and debuffs to the enemy. She picked this class because she didn't want to have to go around killing harmless fluffy animals to level up. She is however a valued member of the team as she's one of the few that bothered to level up her non-combat skills (such as cooking, potion making etc).

Meanwhile, Ritsuko, Misato, Maya, Hyuuga and Aoba have ALSO started a separate party who are constantly plaguing the kids in PVP. I might get back to them later...

Asuka would pick a class that's reputed to be hard to play but cheesy if you follow one highly specific build, but halfway she'd try to become effective at ever combat role and end up as jack of all trades, master of none. By the endgame her leeroy jenkins tactics and bad character build would constantly lead to party wipes but she'd blame everyone else until they got sick of it and blocked her. Then she'd end up playing trad games at a game shop and enjoying attention from needs until she realizes she can accuse them of creeping on her to get them banned from the store, until she wins. Eventually a hot jock with a nerdy side and rich parents joins the group, and she ends up sucking his cock for rare card for her deck, but he always sends her on the walk of shame before getting her off. Eventually she gives up gaming but talks about how nerdy she is all the time.

Shinji plays a healer but keeps trying to tank. When he gets killed he quits the game for a week, but comes back every time when Kaji emails him.

Rei plays an aggro tank and she's fucking good at it but the other players drop the ball and can't keep up with her. She only plays when someone else is online but never chats, just follows order.

Mari plays a female barbarian and always chooses the skimpiest armor even if it's weaker. Her character is a tiefling or whatever special snowflake race is in the game. She "role plays" a pansexual nynohomaniac and hits on Asuka until she blocks her. She constantly shouts tactical advice butis largely ignored. After Asuka quits, she gives Mari her account and she salvaged Asukas shitty suboptimal build with superior tactics.

Hikari plays a support character but not specifically a healer. She's good at buffing but doesn't use debuffs enough to maximize the benefits between cooldowns. The other players don't pay much attention to her but there's always an extra spot in raids for her. One time she sent Toji a selfie of her in her unsexy underwear and cried profusely for a week when she got no response.

Toji plays a crowd control warrior. He's good and his raid plans work, except when Asuka fucks it up for them all. He does constantly and misses raids running to get his gear but shows up for the next one.

Kensuke plays a crafting heavy gear oriented class and prefers ranged weapons. If theres muskets he uses those. Every time he plays he tries to be an elite soldier but ends up becoming a stealth archer. He's actually the best player in the group but these other assholes don't understand game mechanics.

Misato doesn't play. Every once in a while she goes in Shinjis room while he's raiding and flashes her hoo ha at him but he doesn't notice. Gradually it escalates to walking around the apartment nude but he still doesn't notice. Then she puts on clothes and goes out to bars.

Ritsuko plays a slutty eleven sorceress with the weight (boob) slider turned all the way up. She prefers psychic and mind control spells. All her ranged attacks do party damage but when someone complains she says it's their fault. She does a dance emote whenever Gendo is in the party.

Fuyutsuki picks one of those panda people becase he likes pandas, and is a surprisingly effective and tactical rogue/ranged fighter. When the party is wiped he's usually one of the last men standing.

Gendo plays a nexromancer and stays well behind the rest of the party at all times. He never offers advice or joins the group chat unless it's to tell Shinji to learn 2 heal.

Aoba doesn't play but he masturbates to source filmmaker porn of the game. He prefers if it's monsters fucking the girls.

Hyuga plays late on weekends, after failing to catch Misato's attention at the bar. He plays a basic warrior with no specialty.

Maya plays a hobbit or a sprite or some shit and only gets on when Ritsuko is on. Her senpai never notices all the flirt emotes she sends.

Kaji plays but he's always the first one to die on a raid. He's terrible at it but no one notices. He quit for a while because Asuka would not stop sending him pictures of her ass while she tries so hard to have some booty by vending and flexing that it bursts a capillary in her eyeball.

Kaworu plays a bishonen male healer character but his loadout is all offensive spells and debuffs. Raids usually fall apart when he makes a mistake near the endgame and gets hit by friendly fire. He sends Shinji pics of his confusingly large penis. Shinji says he'll report him every time but keeps them in a folder on his computer titled DO NOT LOOK. Eventually Kaworu talks him into making a video of stuffing sharpies in his asshole.

Kihl bought a fully leveled character and a bunch of farmed Chinese gold. He plays only with seven bot accounts alongside him. Once in a while he PVPs Shinji and stomps him for no reason.

That is excellent Chuckman. You are so good at these things.

Anyway, continuation of my own ideas:

Ritsuko is the leader of Team Bridge. She plays a crafting-monkey character who hoards every single bit of recyclable gear she can find, and refuses to use anything that she hasn't crafted herself. She gets very attached to the gear she's made and won't replace it until she's made a better version herself. On the plus side, she does create cool stuff for the rest of her party.

Misato plays a glass cannon amazonian barbarian character wearing a ridiculously skimpy outfit. She's a superb tactician and knows how to give orders to the rest of the party, but she is herself an absolutely appalling player- not because of her planning or LEEROY JENKINS behaviour but simply because she has a crap keyboard and mouse and shaky hands.

Maya is a summoner/mage character who focuses on making her character as cute as possible. She's really into the role-playing side of things and has written an enormous backstory to her character. She is constantly trying to look up Ritsuko's character's skirt. Her gaming skills are average.

Hyuuga plays a healer...who only ever heals Misato. He is constantly breaking rank to try and solo monsters to impress her and always fails miserably.

Aoba plays a min-maxed roid rage ork berserker...bard. He's built his character around debuffs, which he roleplays as using depressing music to make the monsters lose the will to live. Unbeknownst to him, he's making the rest of the party do the same. He is, however, very good at the game.

Kaji serves as the "sixth ranger" and plays a rogue. He's not the best player but his roleplaying is so superb that he's kept around for the laughs he provides.

Then there is "team evil" who isn't actually evil but like to play either villains or edgy anti-heroes.

Gendo is of course the leader. He plays an archmage whose schtick is wanting to conquer the world. He intends to accomplish this by levelling his character and gear and shit to such a high level that when he sells them on the Korean black market he can purchase the MMO company off of SEELE. He is however a terrible player and the stereotypical incompetent evil overlord. Secretly he enjoys the game a lot and he hopes he can enjoy father-son bonding with Shinji over it.

Fuyutsuki plays a Goblin brute force warrior and serves as Gendo's "champion". He didn't initially think he'd enjoy the game but is really getting into it and despite being one of Gendo's henchmen is a genuinely nice player who everybody likes. He deliberately throws most of his fights with any of Team Children as he "doesn't like beating up kids" and "wants to make them feel strong".

Kaworu is a stereotypically edgy Drow rogue. He's constantly trying to persuade Shinji to join his father's party (mainly so he can flirt with him) but always fails miserably. He insists on wearing that one oddly kinky looking armour set with lots of leather and studs in spite of it having sucky stats.

Mari is an archer who prances about in the skimpiest armour available. She's good at the game, but annoys everyone with her slutty behaviour (which is actually a ruse intended to put off the other players and keep her at the top of the game). She has a rivalry with Kaworu, who is unperturbed by her lascivious conduct.

Mana is a two-handed flail wielding barbarian whose only real tactic is MAIM KILL BURN. Unfortunately this means she isn't very good at the game. Even more unfortunately she has a foul temper and bellows abuse down her mic.

"The Nameless One" is a fighter/tank and the party carry. She is actually Yui, who has used Unit 01's built in computer to play the game. She is simultaneously running a second account which she uses solely to send encouragement to Shinji.

Alright, I wrote up a very short mini-fic/excerpt from a hypothetical larger story. I think this idea has legs.

SPOILER: Show
“Blood! Gore! Flesh! Hate! DEATH!” screamed Manus the Mangler as she swung her colossal flail about blindly, caring not what she hit. “I will drink from your skull and braid my hair with your vertebrae!”
Hilde Schlagficker cared not for the tirade and raised her staff high in the air. She bellowed profane words of power before slamming her staff into the ground, a shockwave of fire rippling towards Manus. The barbarian was engulfed in flame, thrashing in the inferno.
When the blaze cleared, Manus was lying on the ground, armour scorched and face blackened, but still barely alive.
“Unnhhh…” she groaned, staring at Hilde with hate-filled eyes. “I’m…going…to…kill-”
She was cut short as an arbalest quarrel thudded between her eyes, killing her instantly. Her head slumped, and her corpse faded away to nothing, with a curious sound of enraged screaming.
“You bastard!” snapped Hilde, whirling around on one heel to face the source of the quarrel. “That was my kill, you little shit! Learn to play!”
“Hey, I’m TRYING to preserve the party!” replied Snorri Sternbolt, the gnome lowering his arbalest. “Every time you use that stupid fire spell it cooks the rest of the party! Look what you’ve done to poor Ratnar and Bolgus!”
He gestured towards a rather frazzled looking pair; a lightly armoured warrior whose shield (and hair) was still on fire, and a massive, broad shouldered greatsword wielding behemoth whose steel battleplate was glowing slightly.
“Pfft, who cares?” Hilde retorted, haughtily. “They should learn to stay out of my way.”
“They were holding the front line!” exclaimed Snorri, gesticulating wildly. “You’re supposed to let them know before you let rip with that dumb firefart!”
Hilde suddenly looked very angry. “It’s CALLED “Coruscating Conflagration” you idiot!” she screeched.
“Well, whatever it’s called, at least signal before you use it!”
“Whatever.”
The Pyromancer gestured towards Korppi Valkoinen, the party cleric.
“You! Wondercleric! Heal me!” she barked, impatiently.
Korppi shook her head. “I think it would be sensible for me to heal Ratnar and Bolgus first, considering they are currently knocked out and you are only missing 3 HP.”
Hilde clenched her fists. “Be that as it may, I’m the party carry so I get priority for healing!” she snarled. “Now heal me!”
“No. Firstly, you are not the party carry, secondly, Ratnar and Bolgus require resurrecting more urgently, and thirdly, Ratnar makes me feel warm, so he shall receive my administrations first.”
“Ugh! Blatant nepotism.” spat the Pyromancer. “Healing that useless lump first just because he gives you the warm and fuzzies. Why, I ought to-”
“Please, please! Can we stop arguing for a moment and focus on getting the party back in fighting shape?” cut in Denna the bard, exasperatedly. “Maybe it would help if I sang a ballad?”
Hilde went deathly pale. “Oh gods, no-” she began, but alas, it was too late.
“~Ooooh, the party is arguing, the mood is dire, Hilde set Ratnar and Bolgus on fire!~” sang Denna. “~Korppi won’t heal the fiery mage, who in turn is refusing to just act her age!~”
The red wizard visibly smoldered with anger and pain. Korppi, for her part, smiled and nodded as she cast a healing spell on the fallen adventurers. “Please, carry on. This is most entertaining.” she said, gleefully.
Denna continued to strum on her lute. “~For Ratnar, dear Korppi is head over heels, and as such refuses to give Hilde her heals! As for myself, my apologies Snorri, but it’s Bolgus my heart belongs to, I’m sorry!~”
The smile disappeared from Korppi’s face. “Actually, I think that is enough singing.”
“~Dear Bolgus, with your bravery and muscular arms, I appear to have fallen for your manly charms! Now that the anvil of war has been struck, I suggest that we go to the tavern and f-”
“Alright, alright, that’s QUITE enough of that!” snapped Hilde, stuffing a balled-up scroll into Denna’s mouth. “Honestly, you really are the worst bard ever!”
Here lies Squigsquasher.

Team Fortress 2 time!

Shinji would be the Engineer because it's the least confrontational class.

Misato would be a Sniper because she'd get to use both her reflexes and cunning.

Asuka would be a Scout because she likes to mic spam and Misato already claimed Sniper.

Rei would be a Medic because that's all she knows how to do.

Gendo would be a Spy because keikaku.
