How do you find new anime series to watch?

I somehow did not stumbled upon anything new since a year or two, although I wasn't looking specifically. In the past the things rather found me.
But now I would really like to watch something new, so where do I start?

I don't like subs as I mostly watch things on the side, so I need my eyes for something else.

And advice would be greatly appreciated.

Look here or here, or the equivalent on other forums; or just read what other people are watching.

Nowadays, as I've done for the best part of a decade now, I look at the charts on the internet for the upcoming season, and follow the discussion threads on /a/ to point at things that might be worth investigating -- but by now being backlogged as all hell, usually wait for /a/ to do some watching as a second filter before checking to see if Crunchyroll have picked it up for the UK. In a few exceptional cases (like Madoka or Penguindrum), when they don't, I then wait for a home video release.

But that is the process for the seasoned (or jaded). When starting out, you have vast back catalog to delve through, some sufficiently obvious to have not been cataloged in the recommendation threads (but have had threads of their own). And the internet will offer you recommendation charts if all else fails (just skip the troll compilations).

I don't like subs as I mostly watch things on the side
In that case, you need to find releases dubbed into your preferred language, but the "how to find titles" can follow the same procedures as above.

PS: Search the Internet for reviews and discussions of anime you know you like, and pick out what other anime they refer to for comparison; I've found quite a lot of good stuff that way.

Along with what's been mentioned; I typically google lists of "best of anime" either of a particular genre, or for the year/season, and try to pick out if there's anything I've missed that might be interesting.

I think my "back log" is smaller than most; I've less than 20 titles on it, and nearly half are just horror films/series I've intentionally put off for the "right moment" to watch. Additionally, I have 9 titles I'm partly into, but for one reason or another, have put on hold (not dropped, I've a different list for that.)

Similar to Mr. Tines- I just watch the Crunchy front page.

I look at different anime types and choose the most interesting premise. If I like the first episode, then I'm gonna try and watch the rest.

-Sometimes you hear of a show due to hype

-Sometimes you read a review on some anime site or watch some youtuber review/comment on a show

-Sometimes you go by genre. Like you can go on MAL and search shows by genres

-Also, on MAL they have top rated shows for each season/of all time, that might be a good guideline

By now I either watch classic titles or I search by staff members. Mainly look for shows by my favorite directors, scriptwriters or designers I haven't seen. With animators I might look for shorts by them.

Usually, I look at ANN for news on the latest anime shows coming soon, and mostly by the seiyuu announcements is what I go with to attract me to a certain type of anime show.

"Must watch", or "favourites"? They're slightly different, as the former will tend to be more accessible stuff with a broader base appeal ^_^
