I've put that show on hold for episode 8. I expected it to be too preachy, but it's a very well-written show that can best be described as Grave of the Fireflies set in the future.

I tried watching Kabaneri, but I found it to be nothing but a boring Attackon Titan clone where I couldn't really get attached to any of the characters. The closest thing I have to an anime I currently watch is, believe it or not, Chi's Sweet Home (yeah, the one about the kitten--it makes great stress relief).
So I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for a series I could watch now--preferably something that's dark with a lot of action and an intricate plot.

It doesn't have a lot of action, but Monster has a really gripping story with some really good suspense. Think what would happen if Hitchcock made an HBO drama.

If you want a lot of action with a great plot, try either

- Kino's Journey (Girl travels with talking motorcycle and explores different lands each different)
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Must see for any anime fan. Two brothers try to get their bodies back after trying to resurrect their mother with alchemy only to discover a massive political conspiracy. Worthy of all the praise it gets.)
- Trigun (One of the best anime protagonists in a sci-fi western)
- Cowboy Bebop (No explanation needed)

Oh yeah, that happens. I had periods where I had no fun watching Anime for a year or so. (Quite convenient, when I look back, because it was the year of my big final Exam for University qualification) I can remember, that Mawaru Penguin Drum rekindled my interest.

Looking through what I've watched, I'd suggest a couple of not-so-recent series, Kemonozume and The Book of Bantorra.

I started to watch Utena again, and it's getting more interesting little by little. Hopefully, by episode 13, things'll start revving up.

I watched the first four episodes of Texhnolyze...but I just couldn't get into it. Nothing against the show, it's well-made...it's just not for me.

As for today, I watched the first episode of Wolf's Rain and liked it a lot. It might be my third choice of anime to watch now that I'm back to watching both Monster and Utena. Might consider watching the other three you mentioned. I started the first two episodes of Berserk and while I did like them, I was too young to understand them. Maybe I gain a fondness for it...I hear the ending sucks though, but as long as the rest of the series is great, I'll make an exception.

I like Wolf's Rain. The production was mucked up, though. In the middle there are four eps of pure clipshow (15:18) - just skip them, they have exactly zero added value beyond a little added voice-over commentary from the characters (and a single scene at the start of 18). The OVAs are a necessary completion, though many people still find the pacing unsatisfactory (I don't mind, though I can see why people might).

Don't worry, I already plan to skip them. It says something when those four episodes aren't even counted in MyAnimeList.

Well, I finished Revolutionary Girl Utena (Now one of my favorites), and I'm close to finishing Monster (I really regret constantly putting it on hold.) Now, once I get to Wolf's Rain, I'll have to have my next 6 choices for what I want to watch next to three:

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003
Hell Girl
Shigofumi
Baccanno!
Your Lie in April
Tie between Samurai Champloo and So Long, Mr Despair
Anywhere Can Be Paradise as Long As I Have the Will to Live...

...after all, I am Alive, So I'll Always Have the Chance to Be Happy.

I only know three of those:

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003. I like both FMA series, but I prefer this one (this is a widely argued matter) - the pacing of FMA Brotherhood is compromised by its rushing over the first part because they'd done it before, and then to my mind the end gets excessively dragged out (admittedly this is a fault of the manga which they didn't improve). I also like to conclude with the film Conqueror of Shamballa, which again is contentious.

Your Lie in April. Highly recommended - a serious look at musical performance in a classical music environment.

So long, Mr Despair (normally known by its Japanese name, Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei). This is often recommended, but when I tried it I just couldn't get into it and dropped it after barely half a dozen episodes.

In that case let me tell you about the other three.

- Samurai Champloo: What Shinichiro Watanabe made after Bebop. I tried watching it twice but couldn't get into it. I'm going to try again. It's about three people, two samurais and a 15-year-old girl who saves them in the first episode and they travel. It's very unique in that it uses a pretty awesome hip-hop soundtrack (Though the theme song is pretty shitty).

- Shigofumi: Don't blame you for not knowing about this one. I only discovered it by coming across a MAL list of the 15 most underrated anime.

http://myanimelist.net/featured/1676/Top_15_Best_Underrated_Anime__Writers_Corner

- Hell Girl: Now this sounds like a fucking awesome show. The main character is summoned by people who want to get rid of someone specific. The fact that it's an original makes it sound even better.

- Baccano: From what I heard, it's Pulp Fiction meets Reservoir Dogs. The intro is 2 minutes long and show us over 15 or 13 characters who all tie in to an overarching conflict in just 13 episodes.

Posting to say that Hell Girl totally underwhelmed me. It's basically the same boring premise and stock footage in every episode.

Purists might say with the VN. But for the anime, with episode 1. After Story is the second half of the series.

I would suggest skipping the OVAs on first watching - they present different threads of the VN, whereas the main series present one consistent line. And have a box of tissues ready for the ending - it's a prime weepy!

So, I've finally finished Monster, and what a ride it was! This is easily one of my new favorites.

I've also got around to finishing Now and Then, Here and There after taking a break on it. It wasn't as great as everyone makes it out to be, but it's damn good.

Right now, I'm watching two anime: Shigofumi and Aku No Hana. I like both of them, the former reminds me of a more story-oriented version of Kino's Journey, following an angel who delivers letters containing the last words of people to people close to them.

Aku No Hana (The Flower of Evil) is a unique one. It got a shoddy reputation when it first aired for it's retroscoped style and slow pace. I personally think that both those suit the show well, especially seeing as how it's a psychological high-school drama.

I just realized that I've been checking out anime that rarely anyone's heard of. I plan to watch more stuff more people know of (Get back to watching Samurai Champloo and Gurren Laggan). In the meantime, once I finish those two shows I'm heading straight to Texhnolyze (I watched the first two episodes and almost fell asleep. Giving it another chance.) Then, I finally plan to watch Hell Girl, Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), and either a rewatch of Kaiba (Not that I disliked it, but the ending left me underwhelmed) or Ghost Hound.

I didn't feel that the first few episodes of Brotherhood were rushed. Maybe if I watch the 2003 version, I'll see why, but I disagree with you about the climax. I can see how someone would find it dragging, and in many respects, it does. But the fight scenes and the sheer epic feel of it make up for it a lot, especially how the stakes kept getting raised every single episode.

Well, I finished off the new year with the original Fullmetal Alchemist, and it's definitely worthy of most of the praise that gets thrown at Brotherhood.

Now, I'm testing the waters with certain shows.

Wandering Son: I've never seen transgender issues get portrayed in an anime, so I have lots of intrigue in this.
Haibane Renmei: It has a pretty original concept and some of the people who made it worked on Serial Experiments Lain.
Legends of the Galactic Heroes: I'm going into this blind with as little info. All I know is that it's a fun but thought-provoking action series.
BECK: Music + Anime
Berserk: I've been meaning to watch this one for a long while, but other series kept peaking my interest more.

...after all, I am Alive, So I'll Always Have the Chance to Be Happy.
