After finally watching the Test Type DVD (yeah I know, I never got around to it), I wondered what the title cards were flashing. After crawling through this site and the internet, I managed to find several frames done by Reichu as well as this topic (http://forum.evageeks.org/thread/11472/Translation-for-the-full-OP-captions/). I didn't like how the latter felt, so I decided to give my hand at trying.

A boy who is summoned{召還された少年}
A girl he recalls{追憶の少女}
A feeling in his heart{Check}{懐抱される心}
The girl who survived{生還した少女}
Why are there tears?{何故の涙}
An estranged father and son{Check}{カイトウ無き父子}
The love and hate continue{愛憎の継続}
Disregard for common sense{常識の逸脱}
Obsolete gods{頽れた神々}
Exhumed giants{Reichu}{発掘された巨人}
The axis tilted{Reichu}{歪んだ地軸}
The taboo released{Reichu}{解放された禁忌}
The rite that was sealed{Reichu}{封印された儀式}
Extra Judicial Secret Military Agency{超法規的特務機関}
A fortress city built for interception{迎撃防衛要塞都市}
The elite girl{選ぼれし少女}
The collapse of the ego{崩壊する自我}
A secret society to fulfill the prophecy{予言遂行の秘密結社}
The investigator erased{消され逝く探索者}
A sickened heart{病んでゆく心}
"I am one of the three"{三人目のワタシ}
A friend becomes a candidate{適格者となりし友}

The barrier of the heart{心の壁}
A betraying smile{裏切りの微笑み}
The formation of the death squad{投入される殺人部隊}

Let me know if you find any errors or have a better translation.

Holy crap it actually tell us the story! Even what will happen in EoTV/EoE!

Kensuke is a military otaku who, at one point, is shown creepily taking pictures of girls to sell. He would clearly fit right in as an animator at Studio Gainax. -- Compiling_Autumn
EoTV is a therapist, EoE is a drill instructor. -- Chuckman
Seriously, that is the most fananked theory I've ever heard, more than Mari being Marty McFly travelling through time to keep her parents (Asushin) together. -- Jäeger

Awesome, I always wondered, what was flashing there, but I never got around looking it up. Thank you very much! I especially like: Disregard of Common Sense. This sentence embodies the problem of communication which is a pretty big theme of the series very well, IMHO.

Just a couple that jump out at me, without consulting anything...

"I am one of the three"{三人目のワタシ}

Sanninme is "third", so probably "I am the third one" would be better. (Just saying "I am one of three" could mean you're the first, second, OR third.)

Her mother was the woman{Check}{女としての母親}

"Onna to shite" would be "as a woman", I believe, like when Ritsuko was describing the aspects of Naoko in the Magi (as a scientist, as a woman, as a mother). I'm guessing this caption refers to Caspar, but I'm too lazy to check right now.

The boy was used{仕組まれた少年}

Kaworu tells Shinji in episode 24 that he too is one of the "shikumareta" children, and "used" doesn't really capture whatever he's getting at. I think it might be referring to how these kids are just pawns in a game that adults are playing, who have never had much say over their own fates -- it's been "arranged" for them.

Also, how did you get "obsolete" for 頽れた, out of curiosity?

I was originally going to use "The Third is me".

"Onna to shite" would be "as a woman", I believe, like when Ritsuko was describing the aspects of Naoko in the Magi (as a scientist, as a woman, as a mother). I'm guessing this caption refers to Caspar, but I'm too lazy to check right now.

Ah, that makes more sense now.

I still don't see an easy way to capture that meaning without a paragraph of text. True, he had no control over his fate. But he was "used" as a means to an end and that was the only way I could think of to make it work.
EDIT: I guess I could say "The boy was a pawn."

Also, how did you get "obsolete" for 頽れた, out of curiosity?

My bad. Should I use "Gods collapsed in despair"?

And thank you for your input.

But "the boy was used" conveys that to me quite well as it stands - it's the meaning I took from it before seeing an explanation.

The caption regarding the Angels was brought back to mind today...

頽れた神々 [??reta kamigami]

I'd never been completely sure what the initial kanji was doing, as it seemed a somewhat obscure use. I finally tracked down an actual dictionary entry, in Japanese,
here. Seems to have the modern pronunciation kuzuoreta, and as for its meaning, there are three entries:

1) Collapse, sit down, etc., upon one's energy or willpower being sapped.
2) Be discouraged / dispirited / despondent.
3) Weaken in physical strength, ability to think, etc.

None of these hew even close to "obsolete", Squall's result, so I'd be interested in knowing how he arrived upon it. Anyway, assuming I didn't mess up, what does this mean for the Angels? Kuzuoreta is a verb basically acting as an adjective here (I'm not good with the technical terms for these things), and same as in English "verb-adjectives" can use different tenses. This one is past tense. The captions seem to use past tense more often than not, as if they are relating NGE's story to use after the fact, so for the sake of simplicity I'll just assume that's what's going on here. Deciding on the intended meaning is more difficult, to the point I'd want to ask a more knowledgeable person about it.

The second meaning is my favorite, since it adds the most to the conversation about the Angels. "Despondent gods". Suggests that they were defeated from the very beginning, as it were.

EDIT: NEVERMIND, the "obsolete" meaning (going along with the reading sutareru) popped up with rikaikun when I actually turned it on and hovered over the kanji. Don't I feel like a tool. :hahaha: Thinking on the matter further, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Anno was intentionally going for ambiguity here, i.e., both readings are valid at the same time.
