And as a result my contribution for this thread went walkabout:

The failure of anyone to tell Shinji that Touji was the fourth child stands out for me; and the failure of Gendou to even attempt to explain to Shinji that fighting Bardiel was actually the best option to try to save the pilot. That whole sorry mess just shows up incompetence at every level.

Shinji is a pretty adamant person. I don't think Gendou would have succeeded if he tried and time was kind of an issue. But yeah Gendo is a jerk.

Episode 18 has so many problems, it might just be simplest to blame it all on imperfections in the script.

"Well, there are certain kinds of drama that I need to have happen for the sake of the ongoing narrative, but I don't really have enough time to make it all logistically work out, so we'll just have to settle as we often must do in the world of television."

Well, if it needs the characters to act like idiots in order to make its dramatic contrivances work, are these not imperfections? Is there any real reason why they have to be there? Would it have been impossible to correct them without sacrificing anything of importance with another draft or two?

This is a work that was thrown together on a tight schedule. Creating airtight logic is not a luxury that would have been afforded the team, so of course there are going to be a lot of problems that emerge with a bit of scrutiny. Good direction does have the power to make the flaws less noticeable and important, however.

Well crap like that happens in art/movies all the time. Sometime it works out and sometimes it doesn't. I think in this example it works. I mean you can call it an imperfection but really that's just an attitude you are choosing to have towards it. Also the holes in logic aren't that huge. Gendo is dumb I guess but yeah I dunno just doesn't seem that bad to me I guess. Like it fits the narrative to me.

For me it works as part of the story, and characterising Misato's and Gendou's imperfections. They still wind me up though!

Yeah now that I think about it Misato was being a bit of drama queen when she stalled in not telling Shinji. Misato is my favorite character...please don't make me hate her lol.

Hmmmmm, now why does this sound so freaking familiar?

For me, every one of the characters frustrated me in some degree that resulted in the fucked up disaster at the end. Really highlights the poor communication and understanding between them all.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Maybe Misato in episode 24 when she realized Shinji wasn't coming home/ was at Kaworu's/ just generally couldn't bring herself to really approach Shinji after Kaji's death, but, I don't think I was really angry at anyone.

I mean, it's not like I didn't feel immense tension/frustration at the expected moments ("ETF Asuka? He could be DEAD! - Just cover her back up, what are you doing? - Just get in the robot! No, don't pull the spears!") but I usually understood why things ended up the way they did even if I wish they hadn't.

I feel Ritsuko smirking while confronting Shinji with the place of his mother's death deserves a mention of some sort.

The worst moment of all time was when Toji flashed Asuka his baloney pony. So rude. I hate it when cartoons are mean to each other!

I was a bit surprised and disappointed when I found that Ritsuko had a secret relationship with Gendo, the same mistake as her mum. Throughout the series she didn't seem to have any interest in love, I even thought she was asexual. But I also liked this, because it made the character more human, and I completely empathise with the things she did later. Hell, even when she cried at the Dummy Plug she seemed so cool to me. It's my favourite character along with Asuka.

And well, at first I was disappointed with Shinji in EoE, but then I remember it was Shinji, you never know what to expect of him.

Shinji in EOE I could bring up many so many things but I think what he did to Asuka in the hospital was the worst for me and it really caused me to really dislike that universes version of his character and even now I prefer his rebuild and manga version over the EOE Shinji any day.
