What are the black patches on the Evas' backs?

I'm talking about these things:

What are those and what do they do? Are they some kind of screen or port?

I noticed that all the standard NGE Evas have them, 00-04. The MP Evas have a half-black/half white circle there. One of the Chronicle drawings of Unit 01 has "Eva 01 Test Type" written in there on both sides, but I can't recall ever seeing that in the show.

Most of the new Rebuild Evas don't have them either. Mark.06 does. Unit 05 doesn't, Mark.09 doesn't, Units 02 and 08 don't have them in their upgraded configurations. Unit 13 has big gaps in its armor there and that's where Mari digs out the handle for the ejection system:

Any ideas?

I thought it was for them to be carried when they're attached to the airplanes.

Exhaust ports maybe? Could also be what ChadPrime said.
Amarantos - an NGE AU, beginning with Asuka, Shinji, and a garden. Take a look. Couldn't hurt.

I remember in EoE you can clearly see Eva-01's energy wings emerging through those particular pieces of armor, but as for the new movies I've no idea. Can't imagine they're all that important.

They probably aren't. If they were, then we wouldn't have to guess what they do! A vent or docking port makes as much sense as anything else, really!
