Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
As far as I'm aware, that part is actually correct, i.e. a guy who has his balls chopped off before puberty shouldn't be all that beefy. (And yet eunuchs being used as soldiers isn't something GRRM made up.) If you're going to complain about anything, it should be the fact that the Unsullied sound like normal adult men. Maybe pitching them up would have been too distracting. :p
So! Anyone else catch the premier last night?

I watched it, but felt very meh. Just vague setups of hopefully more interesting things to come. I'm really disappointed in how the whole Dornish subplot has been handled though.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
He didn't need to be beefy, just toned. This is not how I imagine someone who's been training as a soldier from childhood would look like, even if they lack testosterone:
SPOILER: Show
If he was just one of the random unsullied in the show it would be fine, but he's the main representative of the unsullied, he should at least look menacing.

Yeah, that was the easiest coup ever.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
He really shouldn't, without his arms and armor. The Unsullied are phallanx fighters, they overcome their enemies with pike lines and sheer mass of people moving.
It's actually commented in the books that when rich men buy individual Unsullied for guard duty, etc. they always end up fat and soft.
Their main virtue is that they are absolutely obedient to the point of suicide, not any individual physical prowess.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
That's a fair point, but it's likewise fair to point out that one does not need excess testosterone to be fit and menacing. Plenty of women manage it, and the eunuchs of China back in the day were quite formidable. If the explanation you offer here was likewise offered in the show I think criticism of the casting is unfounded, but if they were billed as warriors who'd trained for the role all their lives I think it's fair to expect them to appear to have an edge, testicles or no (even moreso if the character in question is meant to be an exemplar of such).

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
Eh I'm still iffy on that, I really doubt they'd be, like, shredded. I'd expect them to be fed something like the fish/barley stew gladiators ate or something, very calorie dense to keep up with all the activity. Presumably before they're actually bought they maintain a very rigorous training regimen and then after that just do whatever their masters tell them to do. Literally.
I think the Unsullied are pretty wasted on the show, actually. They could do more with this concept of people who have been psychologically tortured into becoming robots being "freed" and what that even means but they don't really touch on it. One of the pitfalls of adapting a monster series like this.
I hope the property becomes enough of an enduring cultural phenomenon that some decades down the line it's adapted again and they take a different approach. Game of Thrones is in a weird way more fantastical than A Song of Ice and Fire and yet in a weird way is also more mundane and concerned with realism.
They kind of tossed that out the window now with

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
Sure. But the objection is not "he's not shredded" so much as "he looks soft." You don't have to be shredded to be dangerous. Again, plenty of women and historical eunuchs prove this point. Without testosterone you won't have much muscle mass, but that doesn't stop you from being fit and incredibly dangerous with the proper training (you can still be dangerous even if you aren't fit, but if you've trained all your life for the role you're probably gonna be both). And remember A.T. Fish's primary complaint:
A.T. Fish wrote:If he was just one of the random unsullied in the show it would be fine, but he's the main representative of the unsullied, he should at least look menacing.
This particular character is supposed to be the cream of the crop, so he really should look the part. The fact that he doesn't is a reasonable basis for complaint IMO.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
Well, THIS Sunday, presumably.
So, this season. Yeah. Somehow I survived through S5, but I'm just not feeling this one. I'll probably stick it out to the end, since so very little is required from me, but how quickly the mighty has fallen now that it's more or less completely exhausted its source material. (And GRRM hasn't contributed an episode in some time, right?) Definitely makes me want to just marathon the books, which I suppose can't be all that bad a thing, except for the part when I get to the end of DwD and there's nothing after except scattered out of context chapters.
SPOILER: Show
The show feels like it's rushing to the finish line (whatever exactly that is). As my good friend Muggy put it, "Frankly, the pacing flipped from too slow to too fast. So while before you had long, drawn out rich character drama, now you have much quicker escalation and increased momentum at the expense of character depth." We've got cast members being culled down left and right, and in large part it feels completely unearned, a total dramatic waste, done merely to check names off a list. Ramsay is overpowered and boring.
Episode 4's finale seemed to elicit a number of cheers from the audience, but, frankly, I thought it was stupid. Didn't GRRM say that she wasn't actually fire-proof? I guess the show-runners are just ignoring that? Felt like an asspull. Where exactly were these khals' bloodriders, and anyone else for that matter, when Jorah and Daario (I assume) were barring the doors shut? After thousands of years, don't you think the dothraki would have figured out how to have braziers in their temple without risking the whole thing going up in an inferno if one gets tipped over? How exactly did Dany know she would survive this particular pyre, bereft as it was of any witchcraft? Stupid, stupid.

It does feel like that was far too convenient, yes. All the shorthanding to condense plots and characters from different points in a much longer timeline is beginning to very noticeably pile up and get in its own way.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
I might actually jump in at that point. Terrible people being terrible to one another (and occasionally to not-terrible people who don't deserve it) is boring, but watching dragons and zombies (but not really?) going apeshit sounds like fun.

I have always contended that Martin planned all along for the last book to basically be an Iron Maiden album cover. The level of magic and shit steadily increases through the books, yo.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
Thought 605 was a nice step up from the previous installments this season. The finale threw me off a bit, though, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
SPOILER: Show
"A season 6 episode of Game of Thrones without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair." The culling continues, sigh. Who will get unceremoniously bumped off next episode, I wonder?!
Of all the characters to just bump off so casually, why the bloody direwolves? These started out as a seemingly important element, same as the novels, but it feels like they all too quickly became an undesirable expense and they're using the ridiculous escalation of season 6 as an excuse to get rid of them all. And with such little fanfare. (Why did Leaf get a death scene ten times more momentous than Summer's?) Just wait: Ghost will die at Snowbowl, and Nymeria will return only to die in the same episode.
The last scene just felt like another messy action sequence which was too dark and hectic to really follow, and with the timey whimey crap on top of that... Closed time loops are a trope I'm none too fond of, so having one turn up in GoT was just "mehhhhhhhhhh". First impression was that the whole "hold the door" thing was inexcusably silly. (I haven't yet read a single reaction that echos my own, though, so perhaps this will change on a rewatch.) Sacrificing Hodor to the legion of the undead also feels essentially pointless considering the Night's King seems to have the ability to teleport.
Serious question: How can obsidian be both the thing that created White Walkers and the thing that destroys them? There is probably some super-obvious way that it makes sense but my brain isn't cooperating.
Sansa's moment with Littlefinger was undiluted awesome, as little sense as LF suddenly being in Mole's Town, and all alone, makes. I'm not sure what is meant to be the significance of San lying to Jon about the source of her information, though.

Hodor: Origins was a beautifully executed reveal especially given show superficially silly it is. This was one of my top episodes but considering this is only Ep 5 and the big smashes are yet to come, it only builds the hype.

SPOILER: Show
Alas, one of the season trailers shows someone on horseback coming to their aid. Many are hoping for Benjen, since the show's been reminding us he exists since the end of last season.
Next episode goes to KL... I imagine Loras and Lancel are both expendable. Expecting Tommen and HS to die sometime, too, but not sure if this soon.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones
Episode 606:
SPOILER: Show
Huh, no one died this time. Well, still four more episodes. (Only four? And then we get nothing but two runt-seasons? Bleh.)
FUCK YEAH, UNCLE BENJEN! WHAT IS DEAD MAY NEVER DIE, BUT RISES AGAIN, BLUER AND COLDER! All that scene needed was for him to be riding a Megaloceros. Benjen and we have been waiting six years for a family reunion, so I really hope they let him stick around for a while this time. Kind of amazed he wasn't recast. That made the reveal that much better.
Meera was also great here and I'm hoping that the show gives her more to do in the future, as the actress seems more than capable of providing. The character has been quite the blank slate so far, and you'd think with all she's been through we might get a bit more insight into what makes her tick.
Arya has her Needle; all is right with the world.
Regarding Bran's visions, word is that we were seeing both the past and the future there. Mad King Aerys never set off his wildfire cache, so logically those scenes must be a portent. Dany won't have to burn King's Landing to the ground because Cersei will have already done it for her?
So we'll be heading to the Riverlands next time... I don't really care about Lady Stoneheart, but can we please have some Nymeria? Pretty please?
