@Ray: we've been around this merry-go-round before, have we not?
As far as the parallels to the original are concerned, we've gone through the Descent Arc and the self-destruction aspect of EoE. Now what's left is realizing that there can still be hope after disaster and taking the first steps from there. Life is still worth living even if you screw up royally.

@Ray: I follow a writing blog, and back in November they posted a piece you should read. When I first read it, I thought this would be perfect for you, though I din't have a good enough reason to show it until now. I believe Anno knows what he's doing as a storyteller, it's just that he knows things in the narrative that we don't know yet.

Seems odd to say 3.0 ends with Shinji having no one.
She may be a little hard on him - much deserved in the scheme of things - but Asuka literally helps Shinji to his feet and gets him moving. Rei Q finally approaches other people without being given an order to do so. Hell, the very last shot of the film is the three original Eva pilots heading towards safety TOGETHER.

Yeah, the final scene is one of my favourite scenes of the whole franchise because of it.

Maybe the group of Eva pilots walking at the end of Eva Q can be called "Shinji and His Band of Nobodies."

Definitely among my fav scenes of the series and my favorite of the rebuild ones for the stuff that you just mentioned. Also I like how they look walking across the landscape.

Actually, on reflection, the craziest thought I had was that just perhaps maybe it might intrigue me enough to watch more of the Rebuilds.

Tines gonna Tines... (i.e., continue to comment on films that he refuses to view even though it would require an inconsequential expenditure of time).
Misato breaking free of Nerv and becoming the head of her own ragtag band of freedom fighters is a pretty logical place to take things in a version of the story that goes beyond Third Impact (and spares her from the casualties list). Spectacle needn't be incompatible with purpose, either. The Wunder has clear plot functions (which are evident by partaking of the work firsthand, less so if you settle for piecing things together from what others have written) and given the documented Nadia connections there is meta stuff happening as well.

I just saw 3.33 today (after waiting around for the English release for around 5 years) and as much as it pained me (not from the "bleak" story, as I relish in and have come to except such things in Eva's story akin to The Descent Arc/EoE. Hurt Mainly because of how overwhelmingly confusing so much of what was going on with little answers, though I like a challenge), this one comment, after about 2 hours of reading up on 3.33 to make sense of it all, nearly brought me to tears.
Here, the three children are reunited and Asuka (surprisingly although now she is closer in "age") is acting much like Misato did at the beginning of EoE with regard to the "depressed Shinji." This "Rei 3" or "Rei Q" seems to be acting autonomously (although, funnily enough, we have that same ambiguous "do we hate or love her?" feeling we had in the original series when Rei 3 popped up as Rei 2 was dead/gone). I'd say, once I can mentally sort out the impact mechanics, I'll love this film all the more (as I already greatly appreciate it for the parallels to eps. 21-24 of NGE).
Anyway, thank you for this comment. These few words have brought some clarity to the matter regarding this series (and these films) that I have beloved for so long.

I don't get how you can consider going back to the Wunder "safety" for Shinji. While I've enjoyed "Afterwards" and several other fans' takes on what happens after Q, I don't think there's a non-contrived way for Shinji not to be facing summary execution when they arrive. I don't see consequentialist Q-Misato screwing that up again.
Also, thematically Shinji's not-quite-catatonia in Q parallels his stupor in EoE, and he didn't reach anything like safety after he got out of that funk there. The big difference is that he's catatonic after getting Charlie Browned re: taking the reins in Q rather than before as he was in EoE.
Finally, I find robersora and Baggy's sarcastic dogpiling on Ray while adding nothing to the discussion to be unseemly, although I don't think that I agree with Ray's take on Eva as a whole to the extent that I understand it.
