LoGH, at least for the first 15 or so episodes that I've watched, is nowhere near as grim and edgy.

My question is on which version of the story to get: the novels or the anime? As the story has a lot of content (which means paying a lot of money for said content), I can probably afford one but not both.

Nothing of the sort, nowhere near as much sex or violence, though when it does get around to violence, it gets violent.
