PT was more interesting to watch than play tbh.
This one....I'm not sure what kind of one upment it's going for, it's more like Gone Home and that one already got gazillions of lines.

For someone who went through a terrifying episode as a result of a creepypasta, you're pretty brave. IMO P.T. is the scariest, but maybe you're better off watching than playing the series. Playing it might make it too intense. But it's hard to say for another person -- the first time I played SH3 I got so scared I returned it to the rental store (they still existed back then!) having barely even started it, but by the time I had finished it I had become almost blase, having realized that the particular scares I was dreading would never actually come.

Yea, the RE scares don't really have anything on SH, unless your greatest fear is a zombie alligator. While I was playing SH 2 a month or so ago I was a bit shaken by the experience, but it was mostly only when I was actually sitting in front of the TV with the controller in my hand. But like a lot of haunting things I was still looking forward to it when I wasn't playing even though I knew there were times that I would be uncomfortable with the game. And by the time I was done with it I could only really think about how beautiful the game was and I was pretty sad that it was all over. That being said, I don't really have the mental energy to do another playthrough anytime soon.

It was a pretty great experience, which is a corny thing to say about a video game, but it's true. I'm glad it made me feel all of these kinds of things and I'm glad it got me a bit out of my comfy zone, but I still know it definitely isn't for everyone.

My protip is that it's much more bearable during the day, even if some would say that it kills the experience or whatever.

Would it be an error to play SH4 before 3? Because I have no means of playing 3 and I have 4 ready to go on my PS3. I know it's mostly standalone but I'm just cautious of the best way to approach it.

SH4 is a good game with a great plot, gameplay really brings it down though.
However since the plot isn't really a continuation its fine to play 4 before 3, i did.

Played the first one months ago for the first time in years. It was as intense as when I first played it. Never had the chance to play any other past the fourth but then again I don't believe they get close to the old ones. P.T. looked really promising though.

Hey guys, I didn't saw that information mentioned here, it's about Silent Hills.
Guillermo del Toro recently revealed that the man behind the design of monsters was Junji Ito.
Yes, that Junji Ito, the horror mangaka behind titles such as Gyo or Uzumaki.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/27/9406669/junji-ito-silent-hills-kojima-del-toro

So in the end we would had have Kojima behind the gameplay, Del Toro behind the ambiance, and Junji Ito behind the monsters design.
And here you feel that there was the potential for the greatest horror game of all time with such a dream team, and I say that without even liking horror game!

Yeah, it's old news but never mentioned here. Every time we learn more about the game the more it hurts that it got canceled.

I want to think that there is still some chance for the game to be released someday, obviously not with the name Silent Hill. First, Kojima must join/make a big studio and after that to get Del Toro back, although the later said that after Silent Hill(s) got canceled he doesn't want to make any videogames.

A new system shock thing is in the works though, you won't get mountains turning people into poop but hackers panting and sweating through some bitch ai corridors. Just saying you are pretty covered in the horror side of things.

You never know -- Kojima doesn't even have to work for Konami to make a game with one of their brands. In fact, Silent Hills was the oddball for being the first (major) Silent Hill game developed in-house since SH4.

You mean, Kojima makes his own studio or work for an other company and then Konami will outsource the development? Hmmm, it can happen but i don't think that Kojima left Konami in the best terms and if we are to believe the reports there is definitely some bad blood between them, so i don't think this is possible at least for now. After all, some years ago, the Konami president said he wanted Kojima to direct a Silent Hill game.

But since we are talking about Silent Hill, i don't think that the franchise should depend from Kojima's involvement at all. Most people believe that Konami as it is today, can't make a good Silent Hill game. Outsourcing to an other studio is the best option. Shattered Memories and Downpour were both outsourced and they turned out to be decent games (especially Shattered Memories, although Downpour is underrated imo).

I think the best option is to outsource to Project Siren (a division of Sony's Japan Studio). It has some members that worked on the first Silent Hill, including Keiichiro Toyama who was the director, writer and designer of the first Silent Hill game, although they must be short in time and members since they are working on Gravity Rush 2 and i don't think Sony cares about Silent Hill so much when they have Siren.

Beat 4:The Room this afternoon after playing it here and there for four weeks. Although I just played SH:2 this past summer for the first and only time this, I consider it one of my all time favorites, so 4 had a lot to live up to. I thought it was pretty hit or miss.

SPOILER: Show
Hits:
*I really loved the Apartment, and really dug the first person view though I thought I wouldn't. Gives me hope for the new generation of horror games. Anyway, I thought being able to turn on the radio and tv and look out the window and through the peephole was very cool. It was simple, but it was nice. I liked how they tied his pictures to the areas you visit and the little bit about the landlord being old James Sunderland's father. James was a cool character, and I missed controlling a cool character in 4.
*I liked the portals and tunnels and when crap moved around in the apartment. I really liked the Subway world and loved the Water Prison, especially playing them the first time through. The idea of all of the areas being connected and getting deeper and deeper the second time through was cool too.
*The game scared the hell out of me. I live in an apartment by myself so I couldn't play it at night because it'd make me too uneasy. There's always that tagline with shit, like "this will give you nightmares" but then they never really do. This game actually gave me a couple nightmares.
*Walter Sullivan was truly an evil dude. When he was young someone should have told him that apartments can't have human children.
*I collected all the memos and thought they were a lot of fun to read. Joseph was a cool dude.
*Enjoyed the variety of weapons.

Misses:
*This has been said since time immemorial, but escort missions suck, especially when your partner attempts to kill ghosts that cannot be killed and walks very very slowly, and doesn't have too close of a relationship with the protagonist. I didn't mind it so much in 2 with Maria because it didn't go on for nearly as long and because she looked like old James' dead wife. It just made the game not very fun for me.
*If I was in a nightmare world, I would be able to walk down a ladder if I had two broken arms.
*I was unaware until I beat the game, but apparently you can place those holy candles in your apt., but I tried it a couple times it wouldn't let me. It's sort of hard to find the perfect area to place it down if you're getting your life drained.
*The repetitiveness of the second half of the game, but I didn't mind it all that much because I enjoyed playing through the various worlds the first time through.
*I would have liked a bit more of a back story about Henry. I never really cared about him, and so I never really got too invested in the game. The idea of the apartment was soooo cool, but I think the developers may have had a bit of trouble basing a game off of one very cool idea.

All in all, I'm glad I played through it, but I don't think it's going to stick with me for too long. Luckily I still haven't played through 1 or 3 yet, so I can still look forward to those.

I really want to read your thoughts on 4, Joy, but I can't for fear of any spoilers because I haven't played it myself yet. I should really get around to it soon though; Silent Hill has been on my mind again recently.

Yea, when I saw ya posted here I was hoping you'd have something to say on 4, since I think we had similar feeling on 2, but I'm not that sad about it or anything. ;)
Whenever you get around to it make sure you post in here, even if it takes yearssss. I may not be the most frequent poster, but I ain't leavin EGF.

Speaking of 2, I imagine when August comes around I may just have to do a one year anniversary(of my first time playing it) replay... mostly just to hear that music that plays in the very beginning when James is looking out at that old lake.

This turned out being strangely prophetic; I finally started 4 tonight for the first time

Not much to report in yet. I've played about three hours or so, and been to the Subway, Forest and just arrived at the Water Prison. I have to say, I think the opening cinematic is fantastic. Really sets the tone, acts as a great teaser, and makes this look exactly like what I wanted, and expected, of the game: A very different breed of Silent Hill, flecked with scuzzy 90s Japanese horror. Basically, that little intro movie makes the game look scary and weird as fuck, and beautiful, too.

In the game itself so far, I haven't really been "scared" nor filled with dread yet, but I'm already enamored with the mystery, wondering what the hell is going on, and it's only early on. I really quite like the apartment and that it acts as sort of a safehaven. It's almost comfortable.

Beat 4 the other night and got the best ending, 'Escape', although it seems the "best" in this one is merely the standard/common ending, compared to the other outcomes that are available (Man, '21 Sacraments' is a turn for the dark, the equivalent of 'In Water' from 2). Overall, I really liked 4, and it was definitely worth the time, although it certainly has its share of flaws and issues. I agree with what Joy wrote upthread that 4 is very hit or miss.

While it does lack the emotional punch and feverish pulse of 2, or the sheer dread and nightmarish ambiguity of the first, I think the initial mystery and curiosity in 4 helps serve to pull the player into the story. Once the core details of the plot unravel, you're hooked, and dying to see how it's going to end, and where the characters are going to end up.

4 strives for a different kind of horror than the previous entries too. Notice the absence and lack of reliance on darkness or mist. In this game, you see everything with near-absolute clarity. It doesn't want to hide, surprise you, obscure nor make things opaque. Instead, you have full view of the absurdity, unreality and non-Euclidean goings on. For me, 4 didn't scare so much as unnerve and enthrall*, which is interesting, because I've noted many other people saying it was the scariest one in the entire series for them.

My thoughts are many and quite rambling, so I'll have to do the dot point thing...

What I liked...  SPOILER: Show
• The enemies: The ghosts, Twin Victims and Patients were all great enemies. Menacing and intimidating. Walter showing up and chasing you occasionally is pretty full on, although I found his villain-like laughter, chainsaw and dual-wielding pistols to be a bit too comical or goofy to take seriously. While he's no Red Pyramid Thing, he's definitely much more of a nuisance, and much more persistent!

• The Water Prison: Great design, look and feel, and great use of the panopticon concept. The feeling of damp, wet, cold oozes from the screen, and once you realise the cells held only children, you feel a sense of disquiet and sadness.

• Japanese horror and folklore influence: From the Twin Victims, Gum Heads and to the visual of Cynthia's ghost, I loved all the little sprinklings of Japanese flavour brought into a Silent Hill game. I feel like there's many more examples from the game, but I can't spout any further from the top of my head at the moment.

• The spiral descent/staircase: Loved the slow descent down into Walter's personal hell and subconscious between the Otherworlds. Plus, some of the strangest and most off-putting imagery is seen here.

• Improved melee combat: Felt much better than the previous two entries I played, and once you've landed a good strike on an enemy, you can keep wailing on them until they're dead, and they won't recover and retaliate as you're thrashing them.

• The ghosts: Each of them having an individual model, representing one of Walter's victims with their own story. The Swords of Obedience were pretty cool, and it's best to save them for each of the Round Three victims.

• Eileen: Whilst the characters of Henry and Eileen aren't as fleshed out as they ought to be, I actually really enjoyed having Eileen as a companion, especially as she can fight and defend herself a little should you equip her with a weapon (she looks awesome and does good damage with the chain). She's also gorgeous; I think I'm a sucker for her brown hair and piercing light green eyes. I want to know more about her.

• The imagery and aesthetics: The slow degradation of your apartment, the hellish rooms on the upper floor of the hospital, the descending staircase (as mentioned), Walter self-crucified/ritualised in a hidden room behind the walls, the demented and nightmare version of the apartment world, the giant Eileen head, the strange glowing carvings of Walter's victims deified before the final boss fight. 4 really has some striking visuals.

• The story: Walter Sullivan, worshiping Room 302 as his mother, committing serial/ritual murder of 21 people in her name, in order to bring her to life, and be one with her forever. It's weird, disturbing but compelling horror fiction, with our Everyman stuck there only by happenstance; wandering the nightmares and subconscious of the serial killer and his victims. Just really good stuff.

• The apartment and the hauntings: The safest, coziest part of the world eventually turning into the deadliest, most unknown factor. In the first half of the game, the room is your safehaven; in the second-half, I felt like I just needed to rush in as quick as possible, save, and get back out ASAP to the Otherworld in order to feel safer, or more certain, there. This was done to great effect. Holy Candles were essential later in the game.

• Room 302 of the Past: This scene was great, speaking to the deceased Joseph, who hangs suspended from the ceiling as a statue of jet-black obsidian, unmoving, unflinching. Absolutely surreal. "Kill, kill, kill, kill."

• Music: Another great Akira Yamaoka composition...

• The superintendent: Did not expect this kind of a callback to 2. He had a small role in the overall story too, which was a nice touch.

What I didn't like...  SPOILER: Show
• Lack of puzzles: This was really disappointing as there is effectively no puzzles in this iteration of Silent Hill. The only one I can think of, or as an example, is the key to Wish House; it's not hard, and the game spells it out for you in the documents you read lying around. There are a couple more, like washing the dirty coin in the sink, or drenching the prison shirt in the blood-filled bathtub, but they're a fucking cinch. I liked having to work shit out for myself in 1 and 2, to the point where I took copious notes in my little diary I keep on my desk (just jot stuff down, in case I'd need it later). There was none of that in 4, at all.

• Gameplay frustrations: Whilst I enjoyed Eileen as a companion, she is with you for far too long, compared to the shorter stint you spend with Maria in 2, she unfortunately gets in the way at times, and I sweated far too much for her safety and not being hurt by enemies. There are a lot of frustrating points in the game, forcing you into narrow pathways with ghosts, multiple enemies or Walter, et cetera. I find it hard to articulate but anyone who's played the game will know what I mean. The gameplay and execution really let down the story and all the other pros of the game.

• Shallowness of the Otherworlds: The second time around through the worlds they begin to feel shallow and more limited, realising there isn't much more to them that you didn't see the first time around. Silent Hill 4 isn't particularly smaller than any of the other games, but the execution of the Otherworlds feels half-baked or unfulfilled. They feel like they're still works-in-progress.

• Untapped potential: I feel that, with a bit more content, polish and emotional weight; Silent Hill 4 could've been a real masterpiece. Instead, it falls far short. Still a good game but nowhere near 1 or 2 in my opinion. The Otherworlds could've been given more depth and more weirdness could've been sprung on the player in the apartment, e.g. I kept expecting to suddenly turn around and see the hallway stretch down, almost impossibly, into unseeable darkness, House of Leaves-style, or for doors and furniture to start moving around at random**.

• Life in the apartment: Don't get me wrong, I loved the apartment, and it's probably one of the strongest points of the game, but I wish there was more miscellaneous stuff you could do, i.e. maybe even get the TV to work, more channels on the radio, more observations of what the neighbours are doing, so on. Kind of like little side-quests just in the apartment, to flesh it out more. Even just stuff that would just add to the fact that you're trapped, going out of your mind, dying of boredom, in addition to all the hauntings and spooky shit. I feel it would also add more to its sense of place, if that makes sense.

• Boss fights: They sucked. Basically the only boss fights are the One Truth (shitty and forgettable) and the final confrontation with Walter. Anti-climactic.

• Unclear emotional resolution/crescendo: The game kind of just ends, and even whilst getting the best ending, it feels too brief and matter-of-factly. The game should've been going for a bigger emotional payoff with Walter's death (both the adult and child Walter). I felt sorry for that poor kid.

• Lack of "narrative ambiguity reflection": This is a little difficult to explain but 1 and 2 gave you only enough thread to piece together the story yourself, but leave enough untouched so that you will forever be reinterpreting, deconstructing and revisiting the story. 4 is a little too basic and clear-cut by the end. The story is great but there's not really much left to ponder by the time the credits roll.

True, it could've been a masterpiece with more work, but I still found it rewarding. I kind of want to go back to the apartment already.

* Maybe the fact that my cat was sitting in my lap for most of the game, providing a nullifying, calming effect over me.
** I played the PC version, which apparently doesn't have all the of the hauntings from the PS2 version, so I think this affected my opinion here.

This is super interesting, thanks for sharing your experiences!
Now, since the only one I've played is 3, I'd love you to play Silent Hill 3, so I can gauge my second-hand opinion on the other titles better, lol.
I hope you catch my drift.
Any interest in playing SH3?

Hehe, how about that? I knew I'd still be here!(posting even less frequently).

Nice write up though, Blue. I liked a lot of what you said, especially about the game being this close to being a masterpiece. Maybe if it featured a couple more world or something?? When I played I got the bad ending, which was kind of a bummer, but I got the In Water ending in 2 without trying so at least I got that. Glad you liked it, it's a pretty great game.

I played 1 last July, but I don't have too much of a memory of it for some reason.... I did like it a lot, though I definitely enjoyed The Room more. I really like the graphics and the story, but the game never really blew me away. I got the bad ending in 1 as well, goddammit, so I wouldn't mind going back and replaying it...

Never did get around to a Silent Hill 2 replay, mostly because I have the most beautiful memories of playing it back in August '15. The memories of it are enough...

You got a copy of Silent Hill 3 yet, Blue? I've got a copy of it sitting on my shelf that I haven't gotten to (I spend like 50 hours a week going to, being at work so most of my free time is spent watching animes), so whenever you get around to that one hit this thread up and maybe I'll play along as well.
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!
