If you don't read chapter 17, I don't think you'll miss anything critical towards 18. I think I've already said all you need to know.

I think every single one of us who has stuff going in this forum has their share of real life getting in the way.

Yes, I'm a little surprised how many people have been waiting for the conclusion of the Rei/Kaworu/Saburo arc.

On one hand, it gives me more motivation to get past these last few hurdles, but on the other hand, I'm feeling more pressure to refine the script and make sure it doesn't disappoint. Dialogue is getting extra scrutiny and whenever possible, panels are being added to flesh things out more. One major scene left to sketch/ink/scan/shade, then we can talk about finishing touches. So far, the chapter is 37 pages and the last 2 scenes haven't been paged yet. The last scene alone should take up 9 pages.

Guys, (and gals) I have to say as Chapter 17 recedes into history, I feel a bit meh about the chapter. I spent literally years dreaming about the comic indulgence and side humor, but since it came out, I have this nagging feeling it didn't REALLY need to happen and that it might even have been a hindrance on the entire comic. Do you all remember back in Volume 2 when Asuka was in the coma, Mandy was fucking with her (or at least Shinji's) head and Asuka was getting vicious on Shinji? There was some real talk around here that the comic might have been losing its way. I'm feel like that again when I think of Chapter 17. Of course I feel like Volume 2 still came back and ended very strong (some of my favorite work), and the Seele arc coming up will possibly be the best work ever for the comic.

Still, I don't know how I feel ATM about 17. Trying to make up for it with a strong showing in 18. More focused on the kind of character exploration and drama that I think has been this webcomic's best strength.

How does everyone else feel about it/things?

I have already sent you a PM about this a few weeks ago, but I will elaborate a little further. I think where you went wrong is that it should have been a side story instead of a numbered chapter. Since you state the events have little or no consequence to the main story, those who won't read it due to the content, such as myself, feel that there is an unnescessary hole in the numbering. Hopefully, you'll have another chance to do a lighter (and SFW) piece in the future. Until then, as I stated in the PM, I must treat the chapter as not existing and the events therein (what I know of them) has having never happened. But I still can't wait to see where the main story is going.

Yeah, we've discussed it. I was particularly looking for more feedback from others like Bagheera or Chaddyman or El Mariachi or PW or Xander, etc. if they're still around.

In your case, I don't think you should consider it a great shame if you don't read 17. I went back and re-read it last night after my post and I feel a little better about it now. While I do have issues(?) that I'm grappling with, I think it's best to move forward and concentrate on new material that uses the comic's best strengths.

I'm just curious if anyone else has thoughts on the matter.

I had no problem with it, honestly. The way I see it Eva is about people learning to live with one another, so in that sense I don't think you've lost your way at all. 17 might be unnecessary, but it was still an enjoyable read and I don't find it a burden on the story at all. More like a welcome break from the drama of PLOT and a chance for the characters to unwind and interact with one another as ordinary human beings. Crafting that is no sin IMO.

Although it went places I did not (!), I found the chapter an amusing reminder of the short time I spent exploring Vegas myself a little while ago. In any case I don't see it as being out of line with the story so far - it seemed to follow quite naturally as a relaxation, even if the next chapter is going to pick up and go in a different direction.

And, interestingly, it is the first time I ever went and did an entire scene (or to be picky, it's probably just the main part of the scene) in color.

There's an interesting fever sweeping over the entire chapter and in particularly the final scenes.



Chapter now sits at 48 pages with one more scene to go. Heading into the home stretch this weekend!

That was a nice surprise for me. I just went to reread some favorite bits, and suddenly there's a new chapter! I just finished a comment-bombing run, too.

I really liked that couple shot, too. It pictures just what Rei wants so well; that feeling of abandon, all restraints gone that she's seeking from Kaworu.

Damn, now I'm waiting for the next chapter already, to see what the next morning brings!

Post-engagement and post-revealed-herself-as-a-sub-to-Shinji Asuka is fun to watch. She's still got that hard edge, but there's more warmth behind it, more solid confidence. She's not hard because she's afraid she's hollow anymore, she's hard because she's just an aggressive woman who knows she has backup she can count on. It shows up in some subtle ways with how she acts towards Rei and now Kaworu. I can't wait to see more of that too.

WOW! Almost a week and our first comment on Chapter 18. I was beginning to think it was THAT bad.

Well, at least it MIGHT be for most of my regulars.


Thanks, Stryp! Yeah, I had fun reading your comments over there. Sorry to say there's no actual 'morning after' scene per se. Chapter 19 begins in Washington with good old Senator Hardek and before we know it, we're on the aircraft carrier bound for North Korea! We're getting closer to the end.

I liked it a lot! Thanks for putting out an SFW edit too btw. The interaction between Asuka and Kaworu was great imo. In my head there's an omake scene where Rei finds out she doesn't want Kaworu to do quite everything he did with Saburo with her

Man the stuff over N. Korea is gonna be mind boggling if I can successfully get what's in my head onto paper. It's no exaggeration I think it could be the best part of the entire comic. But that will still be a couple chapters from now.

I'm slowly but surely making my way through this behemoth of a work. Onto Chapter 14 right now and really enjoying what I'm reading so far. The plot and interactions so far are fantastic as are the original characters you've brought into it. Looking forward to catching up with it fully :)
