Is Genesect an Eva reference?

Not sure whether this belongs here or in the Off Topic section, but I've been fascinated by the similarities between the titular mechas in Evangelion and the Pokemon Genesect. Heck, I'm even writing a fanfic based around that similarity.
To wit:
BotH Genesect and Eva 01 look like robots, but actually are ancient life-forms upgraded with advanced armor and weapons
Both were conceived as part of a secret organization's plans for world domination (Team Plasma for Genesect, SEELE for Unit 01).
A "shiny" or alternate-colored Genesect is red, the color of Unit 02.
Could this be a deliberate reference on the part of the Pokemon producers?

They remind me a lot more of Asshimar from Zeta Gundam, particularly since the way they transform is identical

Who says it can't be both? Besides, its name is GENEsect. As in Neon GENEsis Evangelion.

Or GENEtics. Somehow more fitting to Pokemon than religious spice of Eva...

It wouldn't be the first time an icon of Japanese pop culture has been made into a Pokemon. We've had Godzilla (Tyranitar), Ghidorah (Hydreigon), Nidoking (Baragon), Volcorona (Mothra) and Ultraman (Bisharp)
