Not sure if a thread like this exists already, but if not, for those of you who haven't seen these yet, behold, the first two projects GANIAX worked on. And it's even before they were named GANIAX.

The Daicon III opening

The Daicon IV opening

See, even back then they were standing out of a crowd. But what really intrigues me is the Daicon IV opening. Good lord, second project they worked on (is it?) and already everything the company is known for is all in place in that opening. Pretty much all of the big hits this last decade (FLCL, GL, P&S) owns to the existence of that opening. For example, it's...

-Having fun with the atmosphere it has created
-Pandering to what interests their inner otaku
-Tons and tons of references nobody but them loved to do
-An instant crowd pleaser
-Needless complicated actions just because it looks cool

And more. Man, I wish someone would fix the copyright problems these openings are stuck in, because it's too important and fun for it to be stuck for limbo with such low quality, don't you?

Hiroyuki Yamaga said at Fanime 10 that the Daicon openings can't be released anywhere (DVD or what have you) because "we'd get our asses sued" due to all the copyright infringements.

But yes, the openings are great.

Daicon opening animations are legendary to the point Daicon IV worked as inspiration for Densha Otoko's opening which says all about it's iconic status.

Daicon IV is one of best anime from 80s, period
ran1: Oh gosh this sentence gave me an internet boner. You're so tsundere.
Mugwump: Goddamn it, Xard! Take me in your arms, you magnificent sex god bastard!
And don't forget to wear the Ran mask.
Eva Yojimbo: You really are the Otaku equivalent of a Catholic and Jew rolled up into one giant dakimakura of guilt.
Gob Hobblin: Sanctimonious, subtly racist, vaguely misogynist, somehow says something while at the same time saying...nothing, really, at all....

Nice, Xard. That's nice.

You wouldn't get any higher quality from DVD than you would from the Laserdisc. These were recorded on 8mm film, so they have approximately the resolution of early YouTube anyway.
