So uh... That thing I mentioned before happened again but on a completely unrelated account, mere days later. This time, the email (two, in fact) was from The Nexus Forums -- it was the email you receive when you request a password reset for your account. Apparently somebody with my first name thinks they made an account there with my/their name and are trying to reset the password.

Funny thing is I don't remember registering on Nexus with my actual first name as an account name -- but I well may have. I have an account there that I made more recently but I created it after being unable to remember what the account I thought I already had there was even called, and I made it long before I even started keeping records of these kinds of things. So maybe I quickly created an account there in the past -- though I still wonder why I would use my real first name as the account name. Could it have been as long ago as high school? Has the place even been around that long?

The IP address of the sender is from Sweden. No surprise; my first name is pure unfiltered Swedish. That much at least adds to the hypothesis that it's a case of same-name.

So first I get accidentally signed up for an account in somebody else's name whose first initial plus last name just happens to be one letter off from this email account, and now mere days later somebody who shares my real name is trying to reset the password of an account of mine that they think is theirs.  :hitthetable:

As many of you know, RadioShack is going out of business. I did a huge haul, today. I spent $115. By my estimate, that would have normally cost about $600. So that's a major steal.

That's not the strange part. One of things I bought was a multimeter. Overall, it's not a bad meter. The continuity mode is really fast, so that's good. It's also got an EF detector, which is handy. But there's two things that make it a flat dangerous meter to use.

There is no fuse on the 10A current range, and there are no MOVs. The damn thing is two PTCs short of having no input protection. Without MOVs, the meter cannot effectively handle voltage surges, and on a meter that's designed for 600 VAC, that's a bit of a problem. I don't know how this thing got it's CAT II rating, let alone endorsement from UL without this most basic of features. Sure, it can measure the mains, and I don't do anything high power, but it's just worrisome that they would sell a meter with a True RMS Converter and not have input protection.

It just blows my mind.

I might be able to add some external protection (a fuse, definitely, and maybe the MOVs). That would be interesting.

Tons of bees (they're honey bees) got into our room--and of course, just ours--somehow underneath the windows by our bed. We're figuring out our options and had a bee guy check on things, but caulking up the area would be impossible, or at the very least wouldn't help.

We're probably gonna have to kill them since sparing them doesn't sound like an option right now.

We'll figure something out, just a little frustrating. Especially in my case where I have no idea if I"m allergic or not (haven't been stung) so I gotta chill in another room for now.

@SSD: If they are honeybees, you better make sure it is legal to exterminate them (I know in some areas, it is illegal). It could be that they belong to a beekeeper, so it might be a good idea to contact someone in your state's department of agriculture first (but then again, you may have done that already, so what do I know?).

Yeah, it's perfectly legal to kill bees by means of swatting, spraying, etc. A lot of places do have laws against the extermination of them and use of certain insecticides, but that applies more to pest control workers than individuals. We called out a beekeeper and he told us to do just that. These were just scout bees looking for a place to setup shop, not a swarm.

The cats have been staging a protest against their current bag of kibble (Wiskas tuna flavour), resulting in untouched dishes, with piles of rodent guts near them. Yesterday evening, the protest escalated when the oldest cat caught herself a pigeon, and feasted mightily.

This morning, there was a still just about recognisable carcase on the patio; but when I got home from work and was going to inter the remains deep in the compost bin, the only sign left was a flurry of downy feathers and one foot -- there's clearly something mightily efficient in the local ecosystem!

It is truly staggering how many failed login attempts I get on my server. Almost all of them from a bot trying a range of ports and username combos. "root" and "oracle" seem to be the favorites. For obvious reasons. Granted I do use a very good password and, thankfully, they haven't figured out that external root login is disabled and the only user in the sudoers group that you can SSH into is my own with a kooky username and even kookier password.

I really should set up fail2ban. Only problem is that I tend to fatfinger my password.

I get a connection to my SSH server every couple of seconds. About half of them try to log in as root; but there's no "root" user anyway - it's a Windows machine!

This has been happening since SSH 1.5 and has been made worse with libssh and other lighter weight libs that can be quickly dumped onto compromised machines or piggy backed into poorly written plugins (like for wordpress). Back before fail2ban I had to write my own log parsing blocker because the slower machines that were like 300Mhz actually slowed to a crawl when the SSH port got flooded with dictionary attacks. And this happens for all services, especially SASL auth for email related services. With SSH, it's pretty classic dictionary, using maybe a list of 100-150 most commonly used login usernames, including stuff like root, stat, wheel, etc that existed for a while but haven't had a login shell for almost 2 decades. It's more annoying when it comes to SASL since in a lot of cases an email address is a calling card for a username + host. Pronto runs a site for SSH.

Run SSH on some other port if you want, pick something ancient like port 2, 3, 5 or 11. I get like 1 random non-nmap connection to those ports maybe once every month or so. Or, if your just going to connect from specific places, filter that port. And if you can't do any of those, fail2ban is ridiculously simple and you can write your own to suit your specific needs, link it to IP ranges and frequency, though I'm surprised fail2ban doesn't already do all of that.

I had the strangest, most surreal birthday week.

On Saturday night, while wrapping up a closing shift at work, I receive a text from my old roommates; they were passing through the city on their way to San Diego for vacation and they wanted to say hi. Mind you, one of these roommates and I didn't part ways on good terms, and I had never thought in a million years that we'd see each other again and have it not result in a fist fight. The other one and I have remained close friends. Now between the time of their original text and me clocking out of work, they got into a car accident about a mile from where I work. Nobody was hurt, but their car was wrecked, their vacation abruptly ended, and they were stranded 400 miles from home. Luckily it was within seven miles from where I live and we got AAA to tow it for free. I let them stay at my place while we worked on the car situation, and between that we hung out and caught up; I tried to turn their vacation around a bit by showing them around LA, and we even celebrated my birthday together at a pub during this time (which was way more fun than my original plan of getting hammered at home). All in all it was good week, in light of the unfortunate circumstances that caused it; it's strange how an accident brought the three of us together again and had us hanging out like old times. We finally got their car up and running yesterday afternoon and they made it home safely by midnight.
