Except Valvrave was nonsensical trash and Ange actually has some semblance of a plot and decent characters. I could get the comparison based solely on the first episode, but it's turned into something altogether different than what was promised there. Not something great, mind, but something far more interesting than expected.

slightly related to the topic of cross ange i did remember a show that pushed the envelope way more than cross ange did before cross ange was ever even thought of: yugioh GX.

Wait hear me out here, in GX a lot of people will tend to remember the crappy 4kids dub, but in the Japanese version (which i love) season 3 did a LOT of ballsy shit.
For one yubel in general,
SPOILER: Show
even before yubel was turned into the demons dragon yubel we never actually found out her gender (using the "her" pronoun because most media relating to the show either refers to yubel as female or non specific and yubel tends to use her female voice when talking to judai) and after she was transformed yubel became a hermaphrodite, this would just be standard anime weirdness however the thing is.........judai was her lover in that past life and by the end of season 3 he is again, they are quite literally soul mates, that not only shows a hermaphrodite character in a sympathetic light (since she was slowly corrupted by the light of destruction i mean she still had a bad habit of hurting those who won against judai anyway but that was more her being a yandere than anything) it also shows her in an actual relationship with the main character and that also kinda implies that judai is bisexual, hell yubel only took over jesse's body because she thought judai had the hots for him now instead of her.

And then you had all those characters deaths in a kids show, a very abusive relationship with two certain characters and a character who valued his sport over everything else so much he literally kept duelling till he was moments from death.

Durarara is back in full force. I'm enjoying every frame of this chaos. Also, I still like Death Parade a lot, though it tends to be a little bit melodramatic at times. The finale for the latest Episode in particular made giggle. Parasyte on the other hand is not my cup of tea. I hope it can deliver at least a good finale. It's not bad, for what it is; I just had different expectations. And Yuri Kuma Arashi shows once again, that Ikuhara knows what he's doing. Though I guess this particular entry will divide people stronger than Penguindrum did. It's kinda sad, that this show's animation is very limited; then again Ikuhara really makes it work nevertheless. It shows, what a good director he is.

View Original PostFireball wrote:Of course the show isn't Code Geass, the comparison is more along of similar anime that have a fun factor by endorsing the outrageous. It may even be superfluous in that sense as many describe Code Geass as a train wreck and rightly so, while I can't say the same about Ange. For an original new IP it's decent enough when you taken it at face value.

I'd have to say that popular opinion, and this goes for my own perspective as well, generally seems to lean towards the opposite of the above on all counts. I just couldn't take Cross Ange at face value to begin with and none of the spoilers about what has continued to happen after the fact (including the events of this week) have made me curious about giving the series another chance. It has only made me glad to have stayed the heck away. Rather than improving on Code Geass, I think both this and Valvrave stand out as unfortunate examples of what shouldn't be done.

Tiger and Bunny: The Rising

On a happier note, I thought this was quite entertaining and a welcome return to a very likable cast.

Of course, the story was just your stereotypical excuse for a bunch of superheroes to fight together and none of the villains were remarkable, but I think Tiger and Bunny has always been at its best in terms of character work and dynamics, which is exactly what this movie provided.

The obligatory new ally (Golden Ryan) wasn't such a bad one-off addition in the long run. Not to mention that it was particularly nice of them to actually give Fire Emblem a certain amount of focus, even if the titular duo got most of the attention. The dub was still pretty good and overall production values were fine. I really, really hope Sunrise does eventually get around to making either another movie or a new season.

Except Rei was a much more interesting character than this guy.
Seriously i might get some enjoyment out of the show if it didn't have mr. cardboard cutout here as our lead.

^Not really seeing the comparison, since Rei is a lot more interesting than most people give her credit for. Inaho, on the other hand, is just a blank slate.

Oh, ok. But the subtitles refer to a male person as the quantum leaper. That's why I joked about the male Rei. Reading about the flack Aldnoah.Zero gets lately, I'm glad I didn't stick around. Although the atomic blast at the end of Episode 1 is definitely one of my most favourite unintentional funny scenes of all time. Cracks me up every time I watch it.

I wouldn't call it "the same", as the main gimmick of the show "watch my zany scheme blow you away", isn't really as front & center, although we have gotten two of such moments from Slaine now.

No, I'd say the character intrigue coming from Slaine and his Martian pals is what's getting more of the focus, while battles serve more as a backdrop or plot device to forward it, especially if it's Slaine doing the fighting.

I'd say that this episode just now felt the most like season 1, probably because Inaho was the focus.
It was actually a three-on-UEf fight, and I was willing to buy what they did with the other two Martians, the quantum clone guy though just had me laughing.

View Original PostRosenakahara wrote:Except Rei was a much more interesting character than this guy.

Well "the guy" here was a Martian, not Inaho, although I suppose the statement still stands as he existed for barely two episodes, and we knew next to nothing about him besides that:

A. He agreed to work for Slaine,
B. He was willing to put martian societal scruples aside to further the cause.
C. He's apparently very comfortable with dying, over and over again...

Seriously i might get some enjoyment out of the show if it didn't have mr. cardboard cutout here as our lead.
And while i only watched season 1 i don't think we ever really got a actual reason for why he acts like he does.

Because Odin's eye was sending him information retroactively via quantum magic before it ever existed.

Honestly, I don't expect an explanation for a character quirk like this anymore than I did for why Gun x Sword protag liked condiments so much.... But he has been more expressive I'd say this season, more likely to break into a smile.

Also, he used his eye-jutsu to tell a girl she was fat. -o-;
