And the mecha is black and white, that's important too.

I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

There are a couple of references this week. The first is from I Can't Understand what My Husband is Saying where they do a rendition of the Congratulations scene. The second reference vito mentioned in the anime watching thread, but I'll also include it here. Today's episode of Shirobako had Aoi meet a man who is clearly intended to be Anno. He looks the same as him, does Ultraman poses, and while I have no means to confirm it, it really does sound like Anno did the voice himself. Again, I can't confirm if it's his voice. But it's still pretty cool.

Evangelion Reference in Steven Universe?

I know I made a joke before about a "Congratulations" shtick on Steven Colbert, but I swear there really was one.. on another show.. about a guy named Steven.

Uh, go to 3:14 in this video. The pie time.

This had to be intentional, right? I mean, that song in the background is a piano version of this show's opening, just like how the song in the Eva scene was a piano version of the OP.

Yeah, it's definitely intentional. The anime influence on Steven Universe is pretty obvious. Among other things, there was a cool reference to Utena in the episode Steven the Swordfighter. And the second episode of the series felt like an episode of Evangelion. This Congratulations thing is probably the most blatant reference though.

Someone add it to the list.

Edit: And now the instrumental from the scene is online.

I remember hearing they had some SM reference so that's pretty cool if that's what they were going for.

I just found one in the last place I’d think to look. I was browsing through the Help Site for the free AegiSubs program, which anyone can use to add subtitles to whatever video they want, and found these images illustrating it’s steps:

Attention here, please!  SPOILER: Show

The “Attention here please!!” was what caught my eye. (Because of course it was!)

Kinda surreal for me, since I'm using the program to spruce up the subs for EoE...

More Steven Universe.

For the record, series creator/showrunner Rebecca Sugar said in a Reddit AMA:

Steven and I watched all of Eva in 2 days which is a very bad idea

^ Any sort of NGE Eva marathon is a bad idea. One that I would look forward to revisiting sometime soon. A friend of mine re-watched the whole original series/movies in a night, and I ended up dry heaving when Rei grew big in EoE. 16+ hours of Eva is just so gloriously, violently raw...
