They are watchable, but I'm annoyed that he wastes all his cool ideas and beautiful artwork to contrived over-the-top drama, that no one can take seriously.

How do you do that? I'm also invested, then suddenly he romps the kitsch up to 11 and I start rolling my eyes. But he doesn't stop there. He meanders on and on and every scene is fuller of melodrama and I'm annoyed to no end and hope it ends, but it just goes on and on.
Maybe I should just make it a habit to turn his movies off after I'm 2/3 in.

Sorry, but his movies frustrate me to no end.

I was remarking that cloud porn is all that would be left of a Shinkai film after removing the sappiness. I wouldn't put Kurosawa at anywhere near Shinkai's level of either of those aspects, from those films of his that I've seen.

I don't believe I can agree with that Mr. Tines - judging from how The Garden of Words was received I'd argue that people are much more in the mood for two hours of raindrop ripples and a score that is nothing but rain.
