Yeah. When the mask falls off in EoE you get a slight glimpse of what's underneath before taking the shape of Rei.

The flesh from her face was also pulled off when the mask fell, if that makes any difference...

Lilith has these big, creepy black eyes prior to them becoming more Rei-like, too.

Well I personally find them far from awful. Compared to this one I found the old SEELE logo boring, and while the new NERV logo is quite an unusual mesh, it doesn't matter anyway since apparently both the old and new logos are going to be used. So stop complaining in the first place.

has anyone considered that the original NERV logo is simply going to be the basic concept and the proper logo will not be known until it is released those logos look quite basic and yet overdone when you consider the simple yet brilliant original NERV logo.

Shit, those both suck. The NERV one is so close to being cool but it's just too busy or something.
