Cross Ange 2: Fuck all y'all, this is glorious. My one question is this: why are they all girls? NVM, it's obvious, but even so that's the only major misstep in the show. The rest is all "this is a dystopia, we're gonna fuck with it, and we're gonna screw with all of your heteronormative assumptions in the process."
Which means, given past experience, that while I think it's awesome in reality I've probably missed something obvious that makes it terrible. Par for the course, carry on.

For my post-3I fic, go here.
The law doesn't protect people. People protect the law. -- Akane Tsunemori, Psycho-Pass
People's deaths are to be mourned. The ability to save people should be celebrated. Life itself should be exalted. -- Volken Macmani, Tatakau Shisho: The Book of Bantorra
I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Gods damn it. Too many similar characters in G-Reco. It's hard to sort out what's happening. It's all glorious, but nonetheless confusing.

Weird, and not sure in a good way. Bl
Melody of Oblivion
Just watched the first episode. My first impression is Psychonauts on motorcycles, if it had all the levity and Burton-esce charm sucked out.
Does it get better?

With much indirect peer pressure (looking at you, EGF) to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena, I'm doing just that. 10 episodes in and finding the mystery interesting. Lots of techno babble of destiny/End of the World/Power of Dios to keep tuned in to figure out what it will amount(?) to, so that's an automatic Evangelion vibe (huge plus!). I do know this generally regarded to be a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, so all the heavy stuff is expected. Granted, I haven't seen any true magical girl anime (I'm sorry Sailor Moon fans! Have seen Madoka Magica, but don't think that counts), but to be fair, I haven't seen any other mecha anime (besides TTGL & Gunbuster, again if that 'counts'), and that didn't detract from my enjoyment of Evangelion.
So hrm... the characters. Given the setting where it's all tip of the hat nobility, I'm finding that niche hard to be vested in. Couple of things so far that I feel wrong to nitpik, as it probably shouldn't be a major factor for the series overall, is just how... misogynistic the male characters are. Slap, slap, and more slaps! Yes yes, I know, it's not only the guys doing this, as noted by the various times Anthy is slapped by school girls. It's probably best to say this is the intention, to hate the high and mighty guys though, so I don't hold much against that. It's the writer doing the job.
Another thing that is a bit over the top is the big brother complex. This is mostly since I don't totally understand that dynamic. Where I can totally see the father complex Misato had with Kaji being realistic, I don't quite understand the big brother complex, and as such, it just comes across as annoying (although humorous at times as well).
That's my thoughts so far. This post largely makes it out to be if I'm disliking this so far, and that isn't the case, just mixed at the moment.

Once you're regularly active on EGF, you get an idea of who is using the "Hidden" feature. Irony, eh?

I'm glad to hear that someone else is enjoying it. It's high on my backlog, and now I have more motivation to watch!
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

Utena is pretty much the "sister" show of Evangelion, and its director, Kunihiko "Ikuni" Ikuhara is one of Anno's old buddies - both of them were pretty strongly feminist. (From what I've heard, though, Ikuhara seems to have given in to the fanservice crowd in Penguindrum, which is a shame).
In fact, the Kaworu-Shinji bath conversation was inspired by a real conversation Ikuhara and Anno had in a bath, with Ikuhara taking, as it were, the role of Kaworu. Make of that what you may...but you now see where Utena is coming from, don't you?

Yeah, I did read that interview. Sounded like one of Anno's shenanigans to channel his inner woman (alongside the reading romance novels targeted to a female demographic), which I find pretty admirable.
Been meaning to watch it for awhile anyway, given the close ties Ikuhara and Anno have (as mentioned) and also because how much I loved Penguindrum. Although, now you have me a bit worried, as I didn't realize Penguindrum was the "given into fanservice crowd" anime from Ikuhara

Honestly, it doesn't strike me that way.

No, not really. Anything even remotely close to fanservice has a proper purpose in the show. Symbolically or otherwise.

"No you wouldn't. Oz's secret is he goes without food to buy that stuff. He hasn't eaten in years." - Brikhaus
"Often I get the feeling that deep down, your little girl is struggling with your embrace of filmfaggotry and your loldeep fixations, and the conflict that arises from such a contradiction is embodied pretty well in Kureha's character. But obviously it's not any sort of internal conflict that makes the analogy work. It's the pigtails." - Merridian
"Oh, Oz, I fear I'm losing my filmfag to the depths of Japanese pop. If only there were more films with Japanese girls in glow-in-the-dark costumes you'd be the David Bordwell of that genre." - Jimbo
"Oz, I think we need to stage an intervention and force you to watch some movies that aren't made in Japan." - Trajan

I have a bunch of stuff left over from the past two seasons to finish - just look at my MAL page; it's a mess right now. One of the few things I was really interested in for this season was the new rendition of Fate/Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works. I've heard great things about the franchise from lots of people, but sadly they can't seem to agree on a viewing order. Some have told me to watch the series in release order (with the possible exception of the UBW movie), while others insist that I should forgo the original FSN and watch the new one as it airs. Any more suggestions to add to the mix?

The old adaptations are so shit that even Type-Moon pretends that they never happened so don't watch em. I suggest just jumping right into Unlimited Blade Works.riffraff11235 wrote:I have a bunch of stuff left over from the past two seasons to finish - just look at my MAL page; it's a mess right now. well crunchy roll is going to stream the uncensored version in the future, however I'd just read the manga. From the one episode I watched besides bad censoring the show didn't look super good and they skipped out on a bunch of stuff.
