I find that Gendou is well described in Behind Blue Eyes - The Who.

I found a decent Gendo song just the other day. Here it is.

The last verse of "Do me a favour" by Arctic Monkeys reminds me of Asuka and Shinji's final confrontation at the kitchen in EoE.

Do me a favour and ask if you need some help,
She said, do me a favour and stop flattering yourself,
And to tear apart the ties that bind
Perhaps "fuck off" might be too kind,
Perhaps "fuck off" might be too kind.
I could hide familiar in my pain
serve my sorrows in vain
or I could step right outside
and show you that I'm alive
I'll leave you behind...

Here's to you by Joan Baez: would be Shinji and Asuka if you change out the characters in this song.

Not your kind of People by Garbage: is also fitting well to Evangelion.

Nuclear by Mike Olfield: Fits to 3.0

Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon by Urge Overkill: Fits to Asuka

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash: This Song says it all.
I carry out things right to the end. No. Matter. What.

Avatar: I declare myself as WILLEs deserved enemy and Asukas and Shinjis punisher

You can (not) hope

„Unfortunately, those other fools and idiots gave you the most worthless feeling. And that feeling is hope. The unicorn alive shitting a magic rainbow is but an illusion.“
-Doom Head, Rob Zombie's 31

„If you were a better person, you wouldn't be here.“
-Loading Screen, Spec Ops: The Line

„Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two conflicting ideas simultaneously.“
-Loading Screen, Spec Ops: The Line

„It takes a strong man to deny what's in front of him. And if the truth is undeniable, you create your own.“
-Colonel John Konrad, Spec Ops: The Line

„Through the darkness of future past,
the magician longs to see,
one chance out between two worlds.
Fire walk with me!“

Oh yeah, the chorus of this one I feel it fits Gendo, as if he's saying that to Yui. It's from an artist from my country, is in spanish.

Te doy lo que hay en mi,
Amor y la ansiedad
De hacer un mundo compartido,
Un mundo ilimitado
Para los dos.

Translation:
I give you what's inside of me,
Love and the anxiety
Of making a shared world,
An unlimited world
For the two of us.
I could hide familiar in my pain
serve my sorrows in vain
or I could step right outside
and show you that I'm alive
I'll leave you behind...

Something about M83 makes me feel...Eva-ish.

I offer this sample from the Oblivion soundtrack:

A long time ago I had compiled a mix for Eva, amongst the songs, I had chosen three Garbage songs, each for a different character:

Asuka- "When I Grow Up"

Rei- "Milk"

Ritsuko- "Heaven is Wide" ( I thought that one fit her mental state in EOE)

For Shinji, I had always liked a mix of:

Bronski Beat - "Smalltown Boy"

Everclear - "Everything to Everyone"

Nine Inch Nails - "Only" and "Every Day is Exactly the Same"

There's more, I just can't remember them now...
"I've had recurring nightmares, that I was loved for who I am, and missed the opportunity to be a better man..."

A song I think is fitting...

Has anyone said "And All That Could Have Been" by Nine Inch Nails?

Here are the lyrics:

Breeze still carries the sound
Maybe I'll disappear
Tracks will fade in the snow
You won't find me here

Ice is starting to form
Ending what had begun
I am locked in my head
With what I've done
I know you tried to rescue me
Didn't let anyone get in
Left with a trace of all that was
And all that could have been

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far away from me
I am
Tainted
The two of us
Were never meant to be
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
Everything to me
Gone fading everything
And all that could have been

Gone.. fading..
Everything..
And..
All that..
Ccould have been..

Please
Take this
And run far away
Far as you can see
I am
Tainted
And happiness and peace of mind
Were never meant for me
All these
Pieces
And promises and left behinds
If only I could see
In my
Nothing
You meant everything
Everything to me

I actually think they're pretty similar in meaning to Thanatos... There's also "Right Where it Belongs" by NIN, there are plenty of vids on Youtube that pretty much spell out how the song and show can be thematically connected.
FROM EVANGELION:
"Acts of Man are greater than acts of God!"

"I'm saying that I love you."

NOT FROM EVANGELION:
"You are excrement. You can change yourself into gold."

Two songs:

Reluctant Heroes from the Shingeki no Kyojin OST fits Shinji, at least at the beginning:

Can't look back, they will not come back
Can't be afraid, it's time after time
So once again, I'm hiding in my room
The peaceful times have made us blind
***
It was like a nightmare
And it's painful for me
'Cause nobody wants to die too fast
***
From my heart, song for the reluctant heroes
Oh, give me your strength
Our life is so short

Song for the reluctant heroes
I wanna be brave like you

And How Do You Love Someone by Ashley Tisdale for Shinji and Asuka (actually the whole cast, really):

Mama never told me how to love
Daddy never told me how to feel
Mama never told me how to touch
Daddy never showed me how to heal

Mama never set a good example
Daddy never held momma's hand
Mama found everything hard to handle
Daddy never stood up like a man

I've walked alone, broken
Emotionally frozen
Getting it on
Getting it wrong

How do you love someone without getting hurt?
How do you love someone without crawling in the dirt
So far in my life, clouds have blocked the sun
How do you love, how do you love someone?

I was always the chosen child (!)
The biggest scandal I became
They told me I'd never survive
But survival's my middle name

I've walked alone, hoping
Just barely coping...

Brave Saint Saturn - Space Robot 5

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qE1Mu_SWn6Y

Lyrics-
So far, so good, or so they say from mission control,
The deep of space is no place for a fragile human soul.
The rockets burn as servos click and turn,
and fall into their place.
Robots can't cry,
don't laugh,
can't die,
In the darkness of space.
He is strong, made of steel with the graphite lining,
Watch his eyes flicker slow like the batteries are dying.

Space Robot 5,
Is he alive?
So very alone,
So far from home.

Three strands of wire,
Threefold the tie that binds.
She is the one thing on the Earth for which he still pines.
To his heart she was life,
So he prays to his Maker with a sigh,
As his fire sputters out,
Because robots never cry.

Space Robot 5,
Is he alive?
So very alone,
So far from home.
It's Ok if you hate me, I hate me too.

You're not here by Akira Yamaoka, it kinda reminds me of thanatos from EoE for some reason:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZmMD84XpCs

Blue sky to forever,
green grass blows in the wind, dancing
It would be much better a sight with you, with me,
If you hadn't met me, I'd be fine on my own, baby,
I never felt so lonely, then you came along,

So now what should I do? I'm strung out, addicted to you,
My body it aches, now that you're gone,
My supply fell through,

You gladly gave me everything you had and more,
You craved my happiness,
When you make me feel joy it makes you smile,
But now I feel your stress,
Love was never meant to be such a crazy affair, no
And who has time for tears?
Never thought I'd sit around and cry for your love,
'till now.
"She had better march back here and try again! I only send people off on my terms! ...Or in a casket."
I don't need a scabbard to sheathe my mind
What is going on is a concerted effort from anti-progressives to silence anyone who disagrees with them.-Bagheera 2016

Yesterday while I was on my way to school, Nat King Cole's Nature Boy popped on my player and I thought of Shinji, also about The Little Prince, but that's irrelevant here.

Kaigetsu Ai-ni Shisu
Lyrics Translation  SPOILER: Show
Distance, my journey to the next world
I become wind
I become breath
I become light and vapor

Nocturnal sea, moon, and wave
I face those indigo depths

Shinigami, the mark of the shadow of death
I become wind
I become breath
I become light and vapor

Nocturnal sea, moon, and wave
I face those indigo depths

Eating lotus did me no good
The shadow of Death drew nigh;
My transparent soul was subdued
Lost time from the depths of night
Surfaces terribly in the moonlight

Nostalgic, natural meditation
Metaphysical sensation
All things in nature, a meditation on Creation
Late at night, the moon in the sea
Panorama carnival

Wave moon, night moon, dream moon, time moon,
Wind moon, breath moon, drunken moon, dark moon
Full moon, half moon, red moon, blue moon
Lost moon, shadow moon, nil moon, anti-moon
Ah, the horned moon, the eclipse!

Moon moon moon moon moon moon moon moon
Moon moon moon moon moon moon moon moon

I always go far
The more rhapsodic, the more pure
I stand before the moon's forbidden door:
"Now, open!"

I become waves
I become darkness
I shine upon the sea
I become the moon

"I am the moon, I am made the moon, the moon that rose over the sea.
Behind and above the maker of waves, I was that moon."

Memento mori mento mori nto mori to mori mori ri, firefly moon
I contemplate my death
Memento mori mento mori nto mori to mori mori ri, noctiluca moon
Contemplate my death

"Stop, thou moon!"

Though I become the waves,
it is an existance without existance
Though I become the sea,
it is an existance without existance
Though I become the moon,
it is an existance without existance
An existance without existance
An existance without existance
Existance without action
Existance without beginning
Existance without self
Existance without thought
Existance without climax
Existance without death

I'm a musician and fan of Eva. Here's a few songs that remind me of Evangelion.

First is "Hey You" (Pink Floyd). It's possibly the most obvious choice from The Wall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymgYEQgSqLI
Second is "Climbing up the Walls" (Radiohead). Definitely matches the atmosphere perfectly and fits the franchise as a whole. "Paranoid Android" works to a less extent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbtZyuOMdHI
Third is "Wasteland" (Earlyrise). When I first heard this song (in Rocksmith 2014), I instantly thought of Shinji Ikari (this song is pretty much the essence of his character only less depressing).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXlVeZAxuLs
"Welcome to the Machine" (Pink Floyd). It sounds like a villain song for Gendou Ikari. Here's the Queensryche cover (It's really cool and slightly more fast paced).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcWAcHHQIN8

That's about it for now. I might make an Eva-inspired remix some time. I'll post it somewhere when I'm done.
I love anime and enjoy the Evengelion series. I'm also a fan of Hellsing (both), Soul Eater, DBZ, ect.

Thanks. The mix was stuff from Shinji's perspective so it was a bit rich in classic rock but with some angsty alt rock (my god, Smiths goes SO well with Shinji ^_^ )

I was working for one for Asuka but all I had on it was "Doll Parts" by Hole and maybe one Runaways song. My thought process went: (keeping in mind lyrics)

Shinji: classic rock, earnest sweet sixties pop, angsty alt rock from the eighties and nineties
Asuka: bratty riot grrl punk

and if I made one for Rei, it'd be a lot of chilly electronica. Chances are pretty good of some Bjork being on it

I could see Bjork for Rei. Personally, I see a lot of Kittie for Asuka (I think Asuka every time I hear Brackish).

Though I could see Asuka unashamedly listening to pop music as well.

A few more songs that come to mind are some done by Marilyn Manson.

Especially since there's an astounding amount of similarities between the show and his "Triptych (Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood) especially Mechanical Animals.

In fact, Manson's "OmEga" character reminds me quite a bit of Rei. There's a set of lyrics from his song, "Cryptorchid" (off of Antichrist Superstar) that reads:

"Prick your finger it is done, the moon has now eclipsed the sun. The angel has spread its wings, the time has come for bitter things"

This totally reminds me of the Komm Susser Tod scene in EoE when Rei III/Lilith's power comes into full fruition.

Also, songs like "Crucifixion in Space", "Mechanical Animals", "In The Shadow of the Valley of Death" "The Last Day on Earth", "Reflecting God", "Dissociative", "Coma Black" all remind me of Evangelion in certain ways.

His video for the “Dope Show” definitely brings Evangelion to mind. There’s a part in it where he smashes all these mannequin replicas of himself, it totally reminds me of the scene in the series when Ritsuko destroys the "spare Reis". Granted, this was recreated from a scene in the movie “The Holy Mountain” by Alejandro Jodorowsky. In that part of the movie, the protagonist has been inebriated to the point of passing out. While he's asleep, the religious fanatics make molds of him (because of his resemblance to Jesus) to create plaster replicas of him on a cross. When he wakes up to find out what they've done, he goes on a rampage and starts destroying the replicas.

Furthermore, I think Jodorowsky would be an interesting candidate and probably one of the few filmmakers artistically perverse enough to do a live action version of Eva any true justice. Especially EoE.
FROM EVANGELION:
"Acts of Man are greater than acts of God!"

"I'm saying that I love you."

NOT FROM EVANGELION:
"You are excrement. You can change yourself into gold."
