I for one am offended by the CIS gendered bigots and the way they categorize waifus and husbandos. Gender is a spectrum, not binary, and it's a choice. Calling Kaworu a husbando just because he has a penis is offensive to transgendered 2D characters everywhere.

Only thing I'd add is that the amount and nature of the attraction varies per individual. Some people refer to their favorite character as a waifu, others to a character they fell in love with. It's also a word heaped in irony so it's generally hard to tell right away how serious someone takes it.
