A trauma trigger is a genuine psychological concept. It's been reappropriated and misused by way of PC-faggotry on tumblr, but that doesn't mean we should censor discussion of a psychological concept on a forum for a show about abnormal psych, especially not in such a cunty way. Filtering it is just letting the PCs win, and Macs are clearly better. In all seriousness, filtering it in such a mean-spirited way is just as retarded as the people who misuse it.

You make good points, Donut. It's a filter from years ago; it's not something that was recently thrown together.

We'll let you know what happens.

I strongly disagree with this.

The whole point of eva was that people need to get over their shit, accept the truth and then get on with the hard business of living. Coddling the thin-skinned and enabling perpetual victimhood is working directly in contradiction to that theme.

Anyone who needs a warning before reading a forum post needs to either suck it up or stay in corners of the interwebs that are specifically set up to be safezones. EGF is very clearly not such a place and I will personally go out of my way to keep it as such if need be.

Yeah but the phrase "trigger warning" is mostly just super patronizing buzzwordy Tumblr bullshit though, on par with "check your privilege" and other obnoxious SJW catchphrases.

Apart from the places where we break linkage to more unsavoury sites, the main use of the filtering has been as nudge moderation.

Having stomped on the original SJW outbreak, it had served its purpose anyway.

Wait, this whole SJW thing touched Evangelion too?
The sole "contact" I got with these morons was in the The Legend of Korra fandom where somehow they managed to see racism from the creators... for creating a female black lead character who(gasp) had characters flaws!

I was never really interested in tumblr, and these guys made me not approaching it even with a ten feet long pole, apparently that was a sage decision.

It took me some googling to understand what was going on here. Anyway, this kind of behavior is not something we see around EGF these days, at least I haven't seen it much, I think chanspeak is the new fad.

I pretty much ignore Tumblr, so what happens there is completely irrelevant to me. The fundamental concepts of being aware of societal privilege and showing sensitivity toward those who have suffered trauma seem perfectly sensible to me. There is such a thing as going too far in the opposite direction, i.e., letting your annoyance with online "SJW"s sap all of the meaning out of things that should remain meaningful. You're giving them too much power.

The problem comes when the SJWs start to complain publicly that the moderation isn't to their liking (i.e. we [on the forums I admin] let people who disagree with them join the discussion, in the hope that they might be educated). I've had a couple rage-quit over this recently. Meh - it's sad to see their real and useful knowledge go, but it's their choice.

How do "things" "happen" on Tumblr? Tumblr brings me porn and cartoons and pictures of rad libraries.

You're giving them too much power.

Well, that's my point - the Tumblr Social Justice Brigade, who are becoming more ubiquitous across the internet by the day, have abused these legitimate concepts into near-meaninglessness by spamming buzzword-loaded phrases like "trigger warning" and "check your privilege" all over the place. I don't think it's unreasonable to request that anyone who wants to have a legitimate discussion of these concepts ought to be able to do so without falling back on shitty memes. (memes don't have to be jokes btw)

Seriously, what's so hard about just saying "Warning: this post is about to get graphic" or "Well have you considered other points of view?" These are far less shitty and patronizing ways of saying the exact same things, and the necessity of putting them into your own words proves that you have some actual understanding of what you're talking about.

So given that, I don't really have a problem with word filters on specific overused phrases like the above.

gatotsu911: Fear not, I know about Mr. Dawkins and the intended meaning of "meme".

While what you say is not completely unreasonable, I'm generally of the opinion that "giving in" to the corruption of perfectly useful terms by noisy minorities is a sucker's game. I prefer reeducation and reclamation to all-out abandonment. Society is fragmented nowadays to the point that, honestly, I don't think the "Tumblr Social Justice Brigade" is important enough to make such a fuss over (and changing my language patterns because they are idiots counts as "making a fuss").

That said, I don't think I personally have ever used the specific phrases "trigger warning" or "check your privilege"... but, y'know, principle of the thing. :p Maybe if SJWs show up here and annoy me enough, we can employ the word filter again, albeit to something a bit less demeaning.

I never used those phrases, and no one has ever had to use those phrases. More importantly, those phrases originated from people who used them for pretty much the same reasons we mock them now, so I'm comfortable ruling them out entirely. Not to mention that more importantly, as I pointed out, they're shitty ways of phrasing the ideas to begin with.

Also, the Tumblr SJW Brigade is more influential than you might think, as anyone even remotely in tune with what's been happening in the gaming world over the last couple years can attest.

People with any views can become unnecessarily or inappropriately fervent about putting them across. If this becomes a problem, it can be dealt with as it happens without labelling a particular group and selectively disadvantaging them - which just exposes our own limitations.
