After a long drought, the local arthouse advertised and then actually showed* a film I thought worth going along to see, just to give an economic signal.
That film was A Field in England, which mixed arty experimentalism c1970 (black and white, "am I ominous yet" music, fragmented narrative and playing with crosscutting and overlays) with spaghetti Western sensibilities in a Civil War** setting. An alchemist's manservant hunting a magus who stole books from his master falls in with a number of deserters from a battle and finds his quarry camped in the eponymous field where the only sustenance to be found is a fairy ring of magic mushrooms. So after a while the "they're all tripping balls" effect leads to the arty stuff and an "I don't have to explain anything that goes on" approach to the narrative.
When it doesn't have its head up its fundament, and lets the (perhaps unintentional) spaghetti Western tropes surface, it's quite good; but on balance the "so edgy I could cut myself" approach gets the better of it.
*Back around Easter they'd put Dragon in the printed programme, but come the week it was supposed to show, nada, and no sign that it even came around earlier than expected.

Watched Evil Dead(2013) last weekend. It's just not the same without Bruce Campbell's cheesy acting, and like may other modern horror films it depends to much on CGI. I would not recommend watching this stick with the Raimi version for the practical effects and the king of B movies. . It's like Total Recall all over again.

Yeah, to be honest i think that Anno's directing ability (or "form" as Merridiam put it in some old thread) is vastly improved for the Rebuild films compared to his NGE era. It wasn't just the increased production values.
Like i said in my other post i have the impression that Rebuild really shines when it goes free reign instead of paralelling NGE, and as such 2.22 (or "Ha" i think it's also called) was not far more amazing than 1.11, but it also completely knocked me out of my chair. Saying that i didn't expect it to be this awesome and in this way is vast understatement, i was completely blown away. I mean, i finished watching at 4 AM or so and i seriously couldn't do anything but think about what i just watched and Rebuild for up to 7 AM or so. I think i might have even been shaking. To tell you the truth even now i'm still a bit shook up/moved from my usual disposition. It was just... Oh god. That was so splendid, so beautiful.
(On that note i wonder how Q will affect me, given that 2.22 alone made me pretty much crash)
All the new additions and divergences in 2.22 had also brought me to notice a feeling i've had since the first film, though: That the Rebuild films are NGE in name only. I would like to clarify that i don't say this as a bad thing at all and i find it more a flaw in my expectations rather than the films themselves. I guess that the name of "New Movie Edition" and the equivalent scenes with NGE made me assume this was going to be a high-quality reprisal of NGE. But aside from characters, setting, emotional and narrative progession (sort of) and a few themathic threads Rebuild doesn't seem to share much with NGE aside from those relatively superficial aspects. Not to say that the Rebuild films aren't "Evangelion" (They very much are) just that they weren't as close to NGE as i thought.
I have to admit, though, that being in EGF also gave me some erroneous expectations which to be honest i'm glad weren't met. From all the Shikinami discussions i occasionally glanced at (i'm a bad person) i assumed i was going to see a hollow shell completely unlike Asuka. To be honest i found Shikinami to be very much like Soryu but just filtered throught Rebuild's different interests and reduced timeframe. There's also the final scene in the film which i thought was going to take as Shinji going as delusional and selfish and going "fuck the world" because he didn't care anymore for some self-centered reason, but more on that in a moment.
What most called my attention was this perceived theme or aesthethic/dichotomy of children-innocence and adult-ruthlesness, best crystallized in the characters of Gendo and Shinji (specially in the Bardiel scene with the cheery soundtrack) and the Tsubasa wo Kudasai scene. I feel that pretty much everything in this final scene (the characterization, the acting, the setting, the events, the circular or theatical design/composition of heavenly blue and tainted red, etc.) works in unity towards this dichotomy. While Shinji emotionally abandons the world and goes to save Rei, i just can't stop thinking that he was pushed to this extreme by amoral forces way beyond his league that wanted to use his naivety and pain for the sake of their own goals. Which i suppose makes a surprisingly striking comment on life.
I admit that at first i was bothered by 2.22's equivalent of episode 19 and the "bloodstained hands" image, because i felt it was unreasonably blaming Shinji for losing any interesting on continuing the fight after being forced to do such an horrible thing (Bardiel) and Gendo (and really, pretty much everyone at Nerv) being callous sperglord. But now i have a different perception of that scene (thanks in no small part to the train ride sequences where Shinji says he wants to abandon this reality "where me and my friends suffer"), It's not so much that it's Shinji's fault, but by virtue of him being there, alive, he has to take care of the world that his father has helped to damage.
On that note, i don't know if i find it an improvement or not that Gendo seems to have been "cast" as a complete villain/antagonist this time. I have to admit i was always amazed at the way NGE managed to make Gendo such a human and relateable character, yet so fitting and established as the antagonist. Then again it seems to me that Rebuild is more interested in going in an entirely new direction for Eva than anything else.
Now, to prepare for the unexpected. To prepare for Q.

Yeah, i admit i didn't think much of it at first, but thanks to a couple clips here and there it has been taking my interest. When i get less backlogged (specially with Gainax shows, now i'm watching Nadia and Kare Kano kind of parallel) i ought to give it a watch.

Well, it's not only the fact the first two Rebuild films's tone was overall ostensibly happier than NGE, but also that there seems to be thematic conflicts and interests that weren't present at all in NGE, as well as the fact the characters are... Well not so much different, but rather used in a different way. And of course there's the whole aesthethic/technical aspect of things, whose essence seem to be completely different in Rebuild. Scenes like Mari's battle with Tunniel, that smooth soundtrack-ed Tokyo-3 scene of civilization going on, and possibly Tsubasa no Kudasai scene are things that wouldn't have happened in NGE even if they had NME's budget in my opinion. Thinking of it, Rebuild's scope, style and essence remind me more of Nausicaa than Evangelion for some strange reason.
But yeah, what i mean to say with that pretentious paragraph is that in my perspective the Rebuild films have a distinct nature and aim compared to NGE beyond emotional tone.

To be fair, it's not like that is a completely baseless proposition, but in my eyes it isn't a comprehensive and objective assesment of that event and all the elements surrounding it.

Saw The Third Man tonight. Good movie, but not one of the best I've ever seen. A lot of pretty neat shots... though there's also a lot of canted angles.

Not really. He's just doing superficially different things with visuals because Rebuild is in film format and because he has more money. His sense of framing and editing was impeccable already back in the 90's and I don't think he has fundamentally changed from those days.
