This is in my neck of the woods so I will be there. Not sure yet if I want to drop $20 to participate in the Eva Real Escape Game (http://www.j-pop.com/2012/real-escape-game-x-evangelion/).
Edit: Checked this out yesterday so here is my review.
I was really looking forward to this event so it was somewhat of a letdown. No photos allowed so I can only post descriptions. $5 admission and reentry allowed with stamp of the revised Nerv logo. What was on display was:
*32 original genga and douga from the Khara vault of 1.0 and 2.0 and the accompanying screenshots. My estimate is that 7 were from 1.0. A mix of the characters, Evas, and events. Around B4 size. These appear in the Groundworks but on a much smaller scale.
*2 banner sized paper scrolls of the illustrations of Rei and Asuka from the covers of Groundwork 1.0 and Groundwork 2.0 Part 1.
*The girls’ school uniform and Mari’s school uniform.
*8 1/8 scale Medicom RAH figures. NFS.
*A complete set of Eva Rodys for $66/each.
*A black shirt with a kanji design, not sure what it said.
*Groundwork for 1.0 and both volumes for 2.0.
*A bust of Eva-01.
*A bandaged Rei figure.
*2 yukatas with Eva patterns. $500 each.
*36 Japanese shirts, all for sale. Prices ranged from ~$40 to $100+.
*A Penpen plushie of him lying prone hanging from the ceiling.
*Footage from 2.0 of CG modeling, progressions, and the finished product.
*One of the worldwide stops on the stamp rally. Mari was the stamp.
I have never been to the Superfrog gallery in the New People building but the set up was:
*After you get your ticket, a timeline and overview of Eva and an explanation of the animation process on both sides of the corridor.
*Asuka and Rei banners on the right.
*Starting on the left wall were the 32 gengas with the Penpen plushie serving as the starting point.
*In the center, 2 long tables, one with the Meidicoms and Mari’s uniform at the end, the other with the other merch, GRoundworks, and the girls’ uniform.
*Near the window the 2 yukatas. Along the right wall the 36 shirts.
*Opposite the yukatas was the stamp station.
From the description and what was actually on display I was expecting perhaps some film strips, other conceptual artwork, and more of the “artifacts” mentioned. Kind of disappointing that more than half of what was on display was merch.
What was on sale was the Rodys, yukatas, and shirts. However for the shirts at least it was cash only and you had to return on Sunday after the end of the exhibit to pick them up. Not worth driving up there again so I didn’t bother. The store had stuff hauled in from the Kinokuniya Bookstore across the street and not that much: Carmine, Chronicles Illustrations revised, 2.0 OST, couple figures. Since I have a 10% off discount card I walked across the street and picked up ECI at Kinokuniya.
So in short:
Positives:
*Opportunity to see the actual gengas and dougas involved in making the movies.
*Able to get a stamp from one of the 4 worldwide stops.
*Goggle at the Rei and Asuka banners, which would take up the length of a wall.
Negatives:
*Half the focus was on the merchandise and not enough on the production materials.
*Nothing from the original series or movies unfortunately.
*Minimal store selection. Then again they shipped over the shirts, Medicoms, yukatas, and Rodys.
Overall I would rate it at 3/5. It was not worth the $5 admission and would be better priced for half. It would only be worth it for someone out of the area to check out as part of a trip to SF. I did go back after picking up ECI for a second look and to get a second stamp.
