Just wait until you finish the series, Asami. You will never be the same. _________________ Utena figures out why the duelists are dueling but what the hell kind of answers does she get? This is my top fave Series of all times. It saddens me how its number of readable fanfics (i.e. not junk) just dropped off so drastically since post 2006 or so, with the entire fandom just SHRINKING along with the plummeting fic numbers. I was very late in finding out how Archimage got finished in 2010, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in wrapping up Jaquemart for Alan Harnum, since I recall him saying he's alright with people continuing the fic if they'd be interested. _________________ The Gorgeous Shut-in:

Nanami and Saionji are made for each other, because they're sore losers
Episode 4 was very sweet and Nanami's attempts at making Anthy look bad were so hilarious, I think this will be of my favorite episodes.
Episode 5 was very nice, too. There is one thing, however...
Am I the only one who got a creepy vibe from Anthy for no reason at all?
I mean, I used to like her, but now it seems like if she were toying with my love Utena and basically everyone else who is involved with her. And that expression bugs me a lot: so submissive. And then all of that talk about obeying everything her fianceé says. I just hope Anthy doesn't turn out into some sort of Marida Cruz prototype _________________ Avatar: Princess Azula, the sociopathic badass sexy bitch that will kill you by just glaring at your face.

That doesn't sound good. I was so into this ship.

Though you'll also find that mileage varies a lot on that front.
As for myself: I like Utena alright, but I found Juri's and Miki's stories to be far more interesting. And once Kozue and Shiori get into the mix . . . holy crap. There's a lot of really good stuff going on there. _________________ Chris Campbell

Why aren't there more men like Miki? There should be more men like Miki. He's cute and he's so sensitive. Miki x Utena is what I want if Anthy doesn't stop all of her 'Master' trash.
 and
How could we call this potential ship? Mitena, or Mikina? _________________ Avatar: Princess Azula, the sociopathic badass sexy bitch that will kill you by just glaring at your face.

I have no problems with the many quirks and cheapness in terms of animation: first, its Japanese animation, so it's to be expected and second, it was J.C. Staff's third anime production. They were newbies back then
I'm sighing right now. _________________ Avatar: Princess Azula, the sociopathic badass sexy bitch that will kill you by just glaring at your face.

Compare the white-lit-HOT PINK shots posted in this thread with the softer, dare I say rosier hue it takes on in orange light (another rad color thing which is near omnipresent in the show):
A somewhat similar effect can be observed with Touga. I can't think of too many other anime that have done this, at least not well, but it does a great job of contributing to the illusion that the show's characters actually have some kind of existence, how their appearance varies in response to environmental conditions, embodiment and all that. _________________ On a stretch of absolutely not less than about: 420,000,000 German miles or 1,680,000,000 hours along which, in 1868, under the constant presence of God Almighty the Fatther, I travelled in the infinite spaces of creation by the most manyfold means of transport, as for instance: Gigantic and majestic carrier, luxury and, transport birds, island-mothships, giant-foundations, lightning-serpents, omnipotence-moths, etcettera, etcettera, always in quite comfortable riding information, I saw during every staar-bright night a chaos of staars of the most manyfold kinds such as the most skilful writer's hand is absolutely unable to describe and to explain. Huh... can't say I've ever really looked at scenes side-by-side before to notice any such difference, but you're right. I wonder if they actually produced color guides for different lighting conditions or if they just applied an overlay. _________________ "IGNORE ME!" - The Galactic Inquisitor

Ikuhara being Ikuhara, he probably just threw things at the colorists every time they screwed up as a form of aversion therapy. I find this attitude very annoying in the first place but instead of starting a massive rant on subject I'd just like to point out that Disney styled "full animation" has always been a minority in the animation world.

Oh, that.
It's a very nice effect and I like the warmth in shots like that in Utena but I can't say that has ever struck me as anything special. Tones like that were pretty much the usual for "twilight" scenes in 90s anime, the only more unique element is Utena's hair colour and that's simply due to pink not being THAT common.
It's not unusual at all for anime characters to have their colouring change based on lighting conditions. Usually it's done with more artificial lighting effects so I can't say if Utena used such colour changes more often with "natural" lighting changes than your average series but certainly it never was boner inducing awesome to me.
Just some examples:
I could do this with pretty much any anime series ever, I chose to use Eva examples because we're on Eva board and its contemporary to Utena and MF ep 3 because I've always liked how twilight scenes change Hime's pretty hair to more greener tone. I could do this with pretty much any anime series ever.
I used sunset scenes as contrast to more "normal" colours because that's the example you used too. The thing is this is how sunset scenes are pretty much always done as long as the art and colour staff aren't utter incompetent morons (and I can't think of any instance of them being so from my viewing history).
Hayao Miyazaki is a director who is very particular about the colours used in all background art and animation so it's no surprise were I to use his movies as examples one could find plenty of rich, evocative changes with character looks based on lighting.
To be frank I still don't see what you're going on about at all. It's entirely normal thing you've picked up there, especially since you used as example twilight scene. _________________ ran1: Oh gosh this sentence gave me an internet boner. You're so tsundere.

I think I'm more concerned by the fact that those shadows indicate Asuka's face is geometric. _________________ "IGNORE ME!" - The Galactic Inquisitor
