More like Ripley's powerloader than a Labor or Gundam, but it's getting there

@BobBQ
Link, please. Interesting stuff it seems to be.
@Mr. Tines
O_O ZOMGWTF O_O
Thats a useful idea! I hope that they won't stop the research. That SAPAS will come in handy in the hospitals, as they've said. I guess that within five years time, rescue teams (mines, earth-quake-destroyed houses, et cetera) can have this suit, so that they can clean the area a lot easily, and can dig more specifically, without waiting for big machines to arrive.
Japanese rule.

I dearly wish I could find one.
What I remember is a grainy black-and-white photograph in a book, maybe one of the many that Time/Life published decades ago, showing a four-legged mechanical walker operated by a man sitting in a cockpit in the center.
The photo showed the device in mid-step, so I assume it functioned to some degree, but I can't remember anything else about it.
*EDIT*
Yatta! Found it!
The Walking Truck, built by General Electric in 1968 to carry infantry equipment over rough terrain. Weighing a ton and a half and moving at four miles per hour, it was controlled through foot pedals with computer assistance.
Suck that, Land Walker.

Some bibliography of previous work in the field here
http://ijr.sagepub.com/cgi/content/refs/25/5-6/561
Note the 1960s dates for things like the Hardiman project. What's interesting is that it is Japan which has taken most of the work in the field since. The noteworthy thing about the recent link above is that the device is now self-contained (even if it only has a 30 minute battery life).

The US military has been pouring millions of dollars into powered exoskeletons for some years now. Unfortunately they aren't exactly forthcoming on their developments. As for the BLEEX system, it isn't entirely dead over in the US as some of the research is being used for the medical project LOPES (LOwer-extremity Powered ExoSkeleton).

http://www.petworks.co.jp/~hachiya/works/OpenSky.html
Needs a proper cosplay, though.

Quite right. And a bug whistle would be nice too, not too sure I want to see an ohmu though.
