The decision PO'ed some fans, who were expecting even a little yuri between main characters, but others liked having the romance elements removed for more focus.

No, no, no... after the 2ch calmed down, the Yuri fans are actually hopeful - now that Tatsuo Satoh made clear that romance is excluded in the two anime he directed this season (Chief Director for Rinne no Lagrange, Director for Moretsu Space Pirate), it actually means yuri is more likely rather than the other way round, because in anime yuri is rarely shown explicitly as such (what happens in Nanoha, Madoka or even "Maria-sama miteiru" is depicted as deep friendship and bonding, but is interpreted by many from yuri angle anyway). Getting rid of the possibility of the three guy "villains" of taking the three female protagonists as love interests in Rinne means the bonding between the three girls will get more focus and make it easier for yuri fans to fantasize about yuri (because no guy is involved now). In fact, some suspected the discussion of why there are 3 guys on the other side that seems to conveniently match the 3 girls on Earth's side may have prompted Satoh to quench any speculation about love and romance will become the main theme in the coming episodes. Needless to say, I am quite hopeful too (being a yuri fan myself) :-)

Remember I mentioned "Kokujo" as one crazy comedy manga about life in a dorm of girls' high school that I love to read? Apparently the 1st episode of anime adaptation is too racy and risque to show on TV (you can see the manga that is adapted in ep.1 in the link above in your post - about the protagonist, having somehow lost her panty, tried to bully her close friend into lending her panty to her) 2ch later posted an update from the official website that ep.1 will now be shown via internet. Before anyone starts ranting lustful guys writing all these fan-service trash for self-gratification, I would like to point out that the author of the original manga is a woman, though a self-declared hentai :-)

That clears things up, because that posting raised a howl, misinformation and I thought all I was getting in Moretsu was just a tease, just as I was drawing some parallels between that show and Mai-Hime.

And I'm still very much a sucker for Marimite.

Not a lot of news about new anime around new year time:

- Uta-no-Prince-sama うたの☆プリンスさまっ♪ マジLOVE1000% will get a 2nd season, but that is very much expected given the first season became an unexpected big hit
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... 2nd-season

- Natsuiro Kiseki 夏色キセキ: Not sure if I reported this, but there have been more information about the staff for the original anime which will star all 4 members of the seiyuu group Sphere.

Last weekend's anime BD sales ranking in Amazon Japan:

With the BD of this season's anime starting to become available for pre-order, the sales ranking is now undergoing noticeable shifts:

- Nisemonogatari easily claimed the top spot in sales ranking. It is expected that it will be the No.1 anime this season. It also has the side-effect of pulling up the ranking of Bakemonogatari BD Box up (to second place).

- For this season anime, after Nise, it is Highschool DxD, which is doing surprisingly really strongly for a softcore porn/fan-service anime - perhaps the ED has much to do with it. After Highschool DxD, there are Rinne no Lagrange, Amagami SS+ and then Aquarion EVOL, followed by Natsume Yujincho 4th season. Moretsu Space Pirate and Papa no iuto wo Kikinasai trail quite a bit behind.

- Onegai Teacher BD Box made its debut at 19th, which is quite good. The timing is likely to coincide with the start of broadcast of "Ano Natsu de matteru" which shares the same director Onegai Teacher. Ano Natsu BD is not yet available for advance order yet, but we shall see them next week.

- For last season anime, Persona 4 (P4) is still like hotcake, followed by (again) Fate/Zero, Horizon and Working 2nd season. Haganai did not do as well as expected though it is still good enough for 2nd season to be likely - perhaps the hype before the season was too high (the changed character design and the screenplay adaptation may also be a reason).

- For the season previous to the last, Tiger & Bunny (T&B) and Steins;Gate have sustained pretty good sales as the final volume is being released.

^ Yes, confirming Blood-C to be the most "gore infested" anime in recent memory (besides the reputation of having a heroine who could save few people despite repeated vows of saving people).

- Shirokuma Café しろくまカフェ (Polar Bear Café), a josei (women) comedy manga about a cafe run by a polar bear with a frequent customer who is a panda, will be animated. To be broadcast in April too.

- As I mentioned previously here, there is this very unique love comedy "Nazo no Kanojo X" 謎の彼女X by Riichi Ueshiba -- some put it as "saliva moe" but I think it is putting it too simplistically though the mysterious female protagonist is the main appeal of the manga (read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mysterious_Girlfriend_X for more details). It will start this April. Anyway, the official website has started:

Amazon JP Anime BD Sales ranking for the last weekend:

- Nisemonogatari #1 is still number 1. In fact it is in number 1 position for ALL kinds of Blu-Ray discs in Amazon JP for almost 2 weeks. It may not mean the huge sale figures achieved by Bakemonogatari but it surely means it will become one of the bestselling anime series in recent years.

- Persona 4 (P4) is doing very well still. Four from the series can be found in the top 10. It is selling around double the next bestselling series among anime from the last season (perhaps with the exception of Fate/Zero but Fate/Zero is taking a unique form of release by going straight to BD Box format without releasing individual volumes, and it willl not be released until March).

- Horizon is the 2nd bestselling anime of the last season (again not counting Fate/Zero yet). Various volumes from this series can be found in the high ranks with vol.2 in no.4 because it is released in this week.

- Guilty Crown #1 jumped up to no.12 as it is released in this week.

- Steins;Gate is nearing the end of the BD release schedule and take up 2 of the top 10 slots.

- For this season's anime, after Nise, the most popular titles are Ano Natsu de matteru, Rinne no Lagrange and Aquarion EVOL, followed by Highschool DxD and much further down, PapaKiki (papa no iu koto wo kikinasai), Inu x Boku SS, Amagami SS+ and Moretsu Space Pirates.

- Lupin III Master File, bascially 10 minute of new animation and then a summary of "famous scenes" with new commentaries, made debut at no.44 and Shingu BD Box, a 2001 anime, debuted at no.79.

no, it hasn't. Just really ugly character-design. But once you're over it and you're past the first couple of slow episodes it's getting fantastic.

I mentioned it earlier in this thread here but at that time no staff information was disclosed yet. For an anime about jazz, make sense to get Cowboy Bebop's Watanabe as director.

As for character design, it is from a shoujo manga and it is not ugly from a shoujo manga point of view, though there is quite a bit of old school feel about it. Just need to get used to it (I know, because I also passed through that phase once upon a time).

F*CK

YEEEEAAARRRRR

I'm looking forward to finding out who's gonna voice the main leads. I'm expecting at least Usagi Drop quality as in, not a complete shit anime adaptation.

Rumor has it that the seiyuu for the 4 main characters are:

Akira Tsubaki to be voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto
Mikoto Urabe to be voiced by Chiaki Omigawa
Ayuko Oka to be voiced by Aoi Yuuki
Kouhei Ueno to be voiced by Takuma Terajima

Before going through the latest news about anime from the past week, I would like to share information about the 2011 annual anime/game CD Single sales ranking as I do not know where else to put it:

*1 *87,209 SCARLET KNIGHT (Nana Mizuki) = Dog Days OP
*2 *82,826 Connect ClariS = Madoka OP
*3 *73,609 POP MASTER (Nana Mizuki) = theme song for game "Idol wo Tsukuro"
*4 *72,746 Junketsu Paradox (Nana Mizuki) = Blood-C OP
*5 *59,510 oath sign (LiSA) = Fate/Zero OP
*6 *54,722 Maji LOVE1000% (ST☆RISH) = Utano-Prince sama OP
*7 *48,994 secret base ~Kimi ga kureta mono~ (Girls from anime Ano Hana) = Ano Hana ED
*8 *48,719 READY!! (765PRO ALLSTARS) = Idol Master OP
*9 *48,403 Magia (Kalafina) = Madoka ED
10 *47,130 Singing! (Houkago Tea-Time) = K-On movie ED
11 *46,571 Unmei♪wa♪Endless! (Houkago Tea-Time) = K-On movie OP

======

This week's news:

- As some noted in "Star Driver" thread, Star Driver 輝きのタクト will have a movie.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... -the-works

- Uniquely popular fan-service + serious scifi drama anime Sora no Otoshimono そらのおとしもの is getting a 3rd season, after sucess of the 2nd season and the movie last year.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... deo-posted

- Blue Exorcist 青の祓魔師 is not just getting a movie adaptation, but a stage-play adaptation as well:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interes ... ay-in-2012

- The intensely fan-service indulgent manga Asa made jugyou chu! 朝まで授業chu! [teaching (kiss) until dawn] will have an OVA made but will only be available as a bundle to a new volume of manga to be published later this year.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... aff-listed

- Light novel Hagure Yuusha no Estetica はぐれ勇者の鬼畜美学, a story about characters travelling between modern world and a fantasy world, will have an anime adaptation:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... t-tv-anime

- The still ongoing idol anime for primary school girls (and the big guys) Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream プリティーリズム will end at the end of March one year after it started broadcast, and it will be succeeded by its sequel Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future in April. The story is set 3 years after the end of the first season with the targeted demography also shifted by 3 years to Grade 5-7. Pretty Rhythm is unique in the sense that every episode of the anime is always accompanied with footages of real-life kids doing idol things and real-life campaign events that focus not only on toys or accessories but also on fashion, dressing up and dances/singing as well. The 3 real-life kids from the 1st season will form a unit called Prizmmy and will debut with their own single, while their anime avatars will also go through training and striving for releasing their own single. The groundbreaking thing that happens in the 2nd season is there will be a unit from Korea (with equivalent real-life Korean idol unit) coming to Japan and study with Prizmmy. It is also hinted that the stage of the anime will move to Korea at certain point. Of course it is easy to deduce that Takara Tomy has its sight set on the Korean market as well, though reactions from 2ch show that most of the adult fans also possess a certain streak of nationalism against Koreans "intruding" on the ground of "their" anime. Kind of sad this is.

Amazon JP anime BD sales ranking for the past weekend:

Observations:
- Finally Nisemonogatari has to let go of its No.1 place. MS Gundam UC vol.5 is a super-strong contender for No.1 place, and the latest Utano Prince-sama (vol.6) also shows how popular this anime is (mainly among female otaku to be sure).

- Two BD Box debuted at high places: Durarara at No.5 and Kannagi at No.9
It is clear that many still have fond memory of Kannagi -- perhaps that explains why Yamakan is still around in the anime circle?

- For "gdgd Fairies", all 3 volumes currently available for sale or pre-sale ordering are in top 40. For an anime that had only restricted distribution (only on Nico Douga and the Tokyo/Kanto region TV network), it is quite an achievement.

- For this season's anime, the positioning has slightly changed. The most popular, after Nisemonogatari, is now Ano Natsu, followed by Aquarion EVOL, Natsume Yujincho 4th season, Rinne no Lagrange, and beyond top 40, we have Highschool DxD, Amagami SS+ and Inu x Boku SS. Trailing further behind are Moretsu Space Pirates and PapaKiki.

- The seiyuu live event of Tiger & Bunny, "Tiger & Bunny Hero Awards 2011" also showed up in the list at No.34.

One thing to note is that for some anime that is definitely not going well in terms of sales forecast, their music CDs are selling quite well. While "Kill Me Baby" is not generating too much interest but its OP and ED leave a deep impression among anime fans (I also wrote about it here). The single with the OP/ED debuted at the Oricon weekly chart at no.13, much better than many expected. And then there is the Macross mix with Blood-C sing-and-fight-and-die-all-at-the-same-time anime "Symphogear" - the first single from the anime (there will be a couple) even debuted at no.6 last week. With a later single featuring Nana Mizuki, one could only expect an even stronger sales figure coming in, and it will be regardless of how well/badly the anime does.

Just a last short note. I wrote a wrap-up account of how well anime from the last 2 seasons (fall and summer 2011) performed in terms of sales. Check the following if you are interested:

I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this cast. The worst that could happen is give Urabe a high pitched 'cute' voice.

Dunno where to post this, but $1.2 mil is still too much of a lost amount.

Yeah, this thread is about Anime news coming from Japan. This is why I do not post any anime franchise deals in US or Europe here... Anyway... since it was posted here, I have some simple questions:

Why did it only know it lost so much in 2010 only now in 2012? It is not as if it took that long to do all the ledgers as they know they made 100,000 USD last year in 2011.
What was the main sources of the huge loss? No information was provided in the article.
