Who would not feel slightly disturbed to see others having sex?
Not in porn or a swinger club or anything, (where its either "not real" or you're part of it) but proper real life.

Just curious, why was the word sex left out of the title? Is it a board thing or part of the OP's neuroses?

Perhaps this didn't occur to the author of this thread?

I always assumed it was because he was seeing the person who was basically his mother getting oral sex from his mentor, considering that his reaction doesn't seem that bad. Also what Yojimbo said.

To be honest i never got the whole "Shinji's a prude" thing, i also just assumed the theater scene (episode 4) as that he was jealous of the couple's capacity for intimacy/happiness (this one could just be projecting myself tough)

It could be that Shinji was never taught about sex in school.

And iirc, Asuka was also disgusted with Misato and Kaji's relationship, but I don't remember If she knew that they were having sex, but she probably figured it out because she's not stupid. But Shinji's reaction was more of shock rather than disgust.

Heh. Lack of practical knowledge about their emotions and urges just makes them easier to control. ;) Because nothing about that could possibly go wrong, eh?

I got the impression that Shinji was "diving" Misato's actual memories, since they were all getting blended together in Instrumentality. I'd have to rewatch EoTV, but I think Asuka was watching as well, though "offscreen."

Eh, I think it was just the shock of seeing someone he wasn't used to seeing on a realistic sexual level (I say realistic because I'm sure before then he'd fantasized about doing it with her himself) gettin' it on.

It's also, of course, society's prudish attitude. A lot of teenagers don't know what to think about sex: is it something sinful for anyone but the most intimate of couples? An occurrence for pleasure of the body over emotion? Something to embrace? Something to fear? Shinji's attitude is understandable considering the setting; I doubt they were particularly sex-positive in his environment.

It is also, of course, the thought of seeing someone he trusted being more intimate on some levels with another person than in his own relationship with her; he has obviously thought of her sexually, but not in a way that could be realized, and he knows this. Seeing it happen with someone else he knows, though, is entirely different. It's like seeing your fantasy come true--for somebody else.

I always thought because he thought of her as family. And no one wants to see their sister/momish figure getting freaky.

Interesting... I never gave the scene a second thought. For me it was clear, that Shinji was surprised... He's a 14-year old kid with no sexual experience yet. He most certainly has a sex-drive (-> boner scene when Misato and Asuka have a bath / are in the Onsen together), bit he is on a very early stadium of discovering himself (no wonder, he has other things to deal with).

Well, Shinji was surprised, and most certainly confused. He is basically thrown into this situation... Also he is angry, because he himself is not allowed to have that kind of "happiness".

Basically, everything that has already been said. Shinji sees Misato as a caregiver first, women second; thus, he's rather disgusted at seeing her "like that."

It wasn't a dream or "all in Shinji's head" because he wouldn't have the knowledge about Misato and Kaji's college days or that Asuka found out about Shinji fapping at her hospital bed. And both strangling sequences lose their meaning if it was just Shinji hallucinating instead of happening metaphysically (kitchen scene) or back in reality (the red beach).

I would say be directly confronted with the closet thing he had to a "mother figure" having sex, and be a little sleazy about it angered him. He had never seen two adults his quazi looked up to in that situation, so he got a little flustered. He was also probably a little jealous. He more than likely had a sexual attraction to her
