Licensing issues aside, I think that ReTake really should deserve to be an animation - though with a more tasteful touch on the sexuality.

Overall, the quality of this fan manga was fantastic, but what I really liked about this fan effort that I feel that the original was lacking was a sense of heart, surprisingly enough. The relationship played between Shinji and Asuka (and Rei as well) was hard-hitting and emotional, and had a sense of believability and realism (well, in context to Eva anyway).

Even if an animation never sees the light of day, I really wish for everyone (hell, even non-Eva fans) to read the (family version!) of this work right away.

NGE isn't sentimental sap about the sorts of people who get anything resembling happy endings, but I don't consider this quite the same thing as having "no heart".

I still haven't tried Re-Take, probably because it just doesn't sound interesting (and when something doesn't interest me to begin with, hype makes me even less likely to bother). A/S is an intriguing 'pairing' and all, but as a target of shipping it's SO overdone. None of the quantum-leaping and "let's make fanfiction by doing scenes in the show over again!" content in Re-Take sounds terribly appetizing, either. Plus Kimigabuchi don't seem to know when to stop.

It just sounds full of hype, overrated, unrealistic waff, lame drama, pr0n, and going on way too long. Maybe I'm wrong -- but that's just the impression I have.

Hmm, funny, I never pegged you for someone to be so harsh, Miss Reichu. I suppose I must keep this in mind...

It's interesting how the graphic sexual situations are used in the manga: a lot of it seems unnecessary, except to demonstrate how off the board Shinji has become in the story (which can still be achieved using more tasteful methods). There is, however, one scene in the manga that I feel that the sexual representation was appropriate to convey the meaning of that iconography. Seeing that proved a point to me...

If you have your reservations about it, and if the family version isn't out yet, I do have another solution. I have made a censored version of the original ReTake. The content and plot is the same, but the difference is instead of say, Asuka's butt, you get a big black box that says *not for under 18!*. Also, some blandant sex scenes have been cut out for tasteful reasons. The violence and gore, however, remain intact to conform to American social norms. Thus, instead of graphic sex, pithy comments and bits of comedy are thrown into the story of ReTake!

Chowwow Presents ReTake: sex is for marriage, but violence is fun for the whole family!

Anyone can PM me for it if they choose, I can either send it in bits via e-mail or I can try to send a whole .zip file via WinZip or Bittorrent (though I have not used the latter for this purpose before).

You can't peg me -- I'm a girl! Wait, no, that's a terrible joke...

I'm usually not that harsh; it was just one of those "pick on Re-Take for stress relief" days. Regarding the pr0n, I doubt it would elicit much of a response from me aside from, "Oh, boy, here we go again".

Need I mention my opinion on Re-Take is, of course, entirely worthless since I haven't viewed/read any more than a couple of completely random pages of the thing. (E.g.: LOL HARPY RAEP)

In its defence, they've made a version where the Hentai is cut out - hopefully it's already been scanlated. Also, I think it stays relatively true to the series through the mysteries in its plot and its execution.

Also, it's not THAT waffy - not unless you read re-take after - which most people dislike anyway and isn't integral to the plot.

Kaworu/Asuka - give it a chance!

I agree, somehow ReTake manages to stick to the tone and formula of the original much better then a lot of the fan fictions of Eva that I have seen. That alone makes it quite endearing.

For interested parties out there, in case the Family version of ReTake has not been scanlated yet or no one can find it, I have made a censored version sitting in my hard drive.

Here is a preview of my efforts and a few examples of the amount of censorship used:

Hmm funny well I must say I did change some scenes in the animated vertion where working on so hmm how to put it... you know what going on but you dont see it and I also only have put it where its needed. Its hard trying to keep it between an M and M15 rating. But still lol not all the porn is nessesary like Asuka being raped although I think that simboliases her being attacked and devoured by the eva series. And retake after I think just the end is in need of a slight edit but when we get to it also there will be many hours of discution thats for sure.

Can't the exact same argument be made in regards to what Rebuild is doing with being a retelling of the series?
"We get to see the same exact scenes just prettier and with a (hopefully) bigger budget, oh boy!"

Found this thread 3 and a half year after its last post... Want to bump it up to offer a few observations:

- More than half of the posters in this thread I do not know
- Again, sad sad sad thing that for all the discussions about the sex scenes and how they could not fit into an anime, no one mentioned there is an all-age version, which is indeed the final version of Re-Take.
- I did not even know Azuma drew Eva doujin ! I found three Azuma's Eva doujin in a site with E-H as logo (they are Misatogelion, Ayanami's Fan and Angel's Rest, two uploaded last year by Super-Shinchan! ). Great find they are. None of them hentai BTW.
- Reichu hates Re-Take intensely without reading it. Now I know why she hates my avatar so much... OK, I know there is something else...

On topic, I think it would be a great idea to see Re-Take animated but it will have to be doujin production. The video that made as Re-Take intro (can be found in youtube) is great. I don't even mind the seiyuu are different, as long as they don't sound too far off. Of course the all-age version will be used -- not only all the sexually explicit scenes were cut or made not explicit, but the story structure is better. It will be great to see the many iconic scenes in Re-Take (the church scene, the scene under the tree, the airport scene, the descent of "god" scene, the last scene over snow covered ground outside Asuka's cottage) animated. Something can be done to address some of the more glaring weaknesses in Re-Take (Rei's treatment is one). That said, it will remain almost certainly as just a pipe-dream. A more realistic aspiration is for someone working officially in Eva to take ideas from Re-Take and work it in Eva -- and I cannot help thinking that Sadamoto might be one of those who read and liked Re-Take.
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,

I would love to see retake animated perhaps as a ova because it's to short for a series (unfortunatly the likelyness of this happening is like 0 percent)

@symbv what year was the all ages version made. Also reichu hates your avatar? I personally like your avatar (it was one of my fav. Scenes in retake)

RE-TAKE was originally published only in limited quantity in Comiket but later got so popular and a mass publication was made so that doujin bookstores could start selling it. Later the sequels were published and sold directly in bookstores

For the mass publication of Re-take, first publication date of

RETAKE 18+ version
===============
RETAKE - 2004 Aug 14
RETAKE 2 - 2004 Dec 29
RETAKE 3 - 2005 Aug 12
RETAKE 0 - 2005 Dec 29
RETAKE 4 - 2006 Aug 11
RETAKE AFTER - 2006 Dec 29

Kimigabuchi always thought his story looks fragmented and sometimes not that clear, so he wanted to do a re-editing and streamlined the story-telling. He must also have been aware that many of the explicit sex scenes were there to push sales of the doujin (where explicit sex is a big driver of sales) and with the success of Re-Take he now also wanted to do something about it. Cutting the 18+ sex scenes also should help spread the doujin to much broader readership. Thus the final edit All-Age Version was born.

RETAKE All-Age version
================

RETAKE #1 - 2007 Dec 30
RETAKE #2 - 2007 Dec 30
RETAKE #3 - 2008 Aug 17

So the whole project lasted at least 5 years (Re-take must have begun at least in 2003) and this is a major achievement for Eva fandom as well as in doujin circle.

First off I want to apologize to you symbv for bringing back up that avatar drama (Mr. Tines told me there was some sort of visibility issue but I never knew things got that bad (glad to see that you still have your avatar after all that)) yeah so sorry for bringing that back up here’s a funny gundam video as a apology (not too sure if you like gundam though) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUBMTiIk-qc

(on topic now) Well it is interesting to see the release date structure of retake. I thought it came out a lot faster than it did, but it is to be expected as this was a fan made doujin. The Epilogue of Evangelion doujin release dates were also pretty far apart too (as I recall they started it right after EoE then finished it in 2006)

Also regarding retake I can’t help but wonder if rebuild gets an EoEish ending (I really hope not though) would we get a rebuild of retake. I dunno but that could be interesting (but I don’t want another emotional rollercoaster at the hands of EoE ehhh might as well tell it here I have not told the whole story yet)

Evangelion one of the biggest emotional rollercoasters of my life: I got into Evangelion back in April of this year with an impulse buy of the 2.22 bluray. I instantly fell in love with the movie (more so with Shinji and Asuka). So I the moment I knew I truly I was truly obsessed was when I almost cried at the unit 3 battle (breathed the biggest sigh of relief when I saw the preview at the end of the movie). So at this point I’m really obsessed (more so than I ever was with gundam) so I go buy 1.01 then to my surprise I discover that there was an anime. I then buy that watch it love it but feel left wanting more. So I start to do research. I find out there is EoE (I thought hurray if only I knew what was to come). Before I watch the movie I read the Wikipedia page. I learn of what Shinji does in the beginning of the movie I think that someone just edited the page (oh how I wish I was right). Then I watch the movie then I think to myself (pardon my language here) what the f*** did I just watch. I then re-watch the movie and this time I notice some of the more disturbing things (I almost vomited when I saw the maggot ridden Asuka). For the next month I was left broken and had several EoE related nightmares (at this point I’m pretty depressed). So after a month of depression I decide to do some research. I discover evageeks. I get some answers and learn of retake. I then read retake and I don’t feel as bad anymore and eva and I make up. Well that’s my EoE story it’s not as bad as Symbv’s ten year hiatus from anime but during that month things got pretty dark.

You came to EoE via EoTV after NME (rebuild)? Quite an unusual path to me, but I have a feeling given NME being more recent (and thus look "better animated") there are many who come to Eva through NME. It is lucky that you found Re-take relatively sooner and help you attain closure. Re-take was not even written when I went to my 10 years of drought in 2000 :-(

Actually some say NME is Anno's own way to achieve his kind of closure with Eva and I hope this is true as this may indicate a less traumatic and psychotic approach for the ending. And given Anno's stated aim of drawing in younger audience to anime with NME (where as in EoE Anno's aim seemed to be pushing the anime fans to leave anime and "have a life") I surely hope he is not going to do it with a depressing and grim ending. That said I always remind myself - Anno is not to be trusted :stubborn: In fact given Sadamoto's Eva manga is showing Shinji risking everything to save Asuka that resembles Re-Take, I wonder whether we may see hat tipping towards Re-Take in NME. That would be the best form of thanks from the official staff of Eva for this wonderful doujin work.
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,

Regarding my first exposure to Evangelion it was originally through a tv commercial. When I first saw the commercial it was at first a shock (anime NEVER gets any commercial time here in Canada EVER!!!) and then scepticism (they called 2.22 perfection and many other things that sound too good to be true). So when I saw the bluray of 2.22 I look at the movie for a while see a cute girl on the back of the box (Asuka) so then I impulse bought it to see if it was “perfection”. I feel like such a newbie for not knowing there was a series and just the rebuild movies (the whole .22 and .11 should have been a indicator that there was a series)

Regarding Anno I am hoping for a “happy ending” for rebuild but I’m not holding my breath. I am expecting a mind screw for sure but let’s hope not as bad as EoE (oh I really hope he has not got any death threats recently)

Also regarding retakes influence on sadamato’s manga I saw it there too in the most recent chapter. Even though I was not able to read it (it was a raw and unfortunately I can’t read Japanese) from what I saw it look like it had a retake feel to it for sure. Also from what I heard one of Shinji’s lines is something along the lines of “I’m going to save Asuka no matter what” (The A/S shipper in me is jumping for joy right now). It’s really nice to see the retake influence in the manga (I wonder if Anno and Sadamato have read retake, I would think so since it is apparently quite popular in Japan (if they have not they should at least check out the all ages version))

I watched Evangelion first time when I was a kid i think 10 years old, at the time I didnt understand it a lot, the only thing dragging me in, was Asuka and the Evas. When I grew older i remember the series, and watched it again with more critteria. My sad when I finally saw EoE was similar as you guys, I could not believe Shinji was such a shitty guy in that movie. When I found Re-take to me at least it give the final conclusion I WANTED TO SEE to the A/S (though i think pussy Shinji doesnt deserve it) and I would love to see it in Anime.

Finally I´m not so optimistic like you guys about Rebuild, I mean I don´t know how Asuka´s character can evolve in something similar to his TV counterpart. The way the things have happened it just dont make sense to me. (what´s the point on getting her so injured and aparently out of the story so early ). Also I dont dig the eyepatch PERIOD.

The manga counterpart it´s getting really good now in the end, finally Shinji grew some balls, if only the development of their relationship would have been more similar to the one on the anime.

well that´s my opinion also Asuka FAN DETECTEED!! XD

No he shouldn't Anno needs to go do an anime that isn't evangelion after rebuild is over. I mean does anyone else find it funny the first really serious anime he does after evangelion is evangelion? Especially after he told Miyazaki he'd never touch it again? I'd like to see something new from Anno after all this is over.
