Sepher Sephiroth was a pansy man ... angel ... thing. "You can blow a hole through Jupiter, but you can't manage a measly 1-hit KO on my party? lol lam0r!!!" Now, Emerald and Ruby Weapon, on the other hand...
Then there are games like "SaGa Frontier" (which was kinda fun in a crappy way), wherein you could be battling through a dungeon of total wusses, and all of a sudden you encounter an enemy who totally pwns your entire party without a moment's notice.
I remember the last dungeon of FFV being one sustained living hell, as well. I never beat that game.

I'm probably the only man alive who thought the thing with both WEAPONs is not that they were actually challenging, just time consuming.
Given enough time you can kill them with absolute, utter ease.

You should play FFIV then! This must have been the most difficult of the series!
As for FFVII, i believe it's kinda overrated! I mean, yeah great story, characters etc but not "teh awesome"!-- the music though is the best of the series--
I prefer VIII or IX!

I played the crappy "Final Fantasy II" version and whooped Zeromus on my first try. Does that count?

I wasn't even paying attention to hype or anything when I played it. I'd been living under a rock.
"Hey, bro, WTF is this?"
"Final Fantasy VII."
"Oh... Looks kinda ... different."
:polygons: :whirring disc drive: :FMVs: :pimp: :dodgy translations:
"Hey, this looks sweet. Let me play it, bitch. (That's right.)"
Later...
"zOMG this game r00lz!!! <3 <3 Vincent <3 <3"
I prefer VIII or IX!
VIII was nice, but it didn't have the impact on me that VII did. I haven't played any of the ones after it. (In the main FF series, anyway.)
Actually, I lurve "Final Fantasy Tactics". The original, not the lame GBA one.

FFVII was the first one of the series that was released on PSone, that's why i think it had such impact among the fans!
As for FFII or IV, i guess it counts!

Anyone with half a brain (ie Knights of the Rounds materia) would say the same thing.

FFV's final Dungeon was pretty bad, but it was nothing compared to FFIIIj's. Long dungeon with multiple enemies that cast death + 6 bosses in succession + no save points = hell.
I can't say I was ever a great fan of FFVII. The graphics have aged horribly over the years, the story is poorly explained, the characters abuse character archetypes far too much and the battle system didn't really offer many invigorations over previous FF games. I would take FFVI/FFIX/FFX/FFX-2/FFT over this game any day. Advent Children was infinitely worse though; God knows what Square was thinking when they made it.
