After listening to Grant ramble on about how she dreamed about becoming BFFs with Miyamura and them doing Hello Kitty related things, and it being awesome, and whatever else I can't remember off the top of my head; I feel everlasting sorrow for Miyamura.

This. Expecdially the Hello Kitty part.

And stop dissing Death Note, it's awesome.

I must admit that Grant did improve compared to the screeching nightmare of the original series, but... no. Stood out like a sore thumb amids the mostly awesome rebuild dub.
They only recast her because some of the crazy american fans (or at least the vocal minority who are as obsessed as her) are attached to her, not because of any skill... yeah, she's a fan of the character, but that doesn't mean she gets the Character, or that she is any good at performing as her...

Or maybe it's just that I still resent her for the cruel fate of her lone Shinji plushie.

As evidently part of the "minority obsessed with her", I have to call "bullsh*t" on your reasoning. Funimation had no reason to consider her any differently than any other member of the dub, that's your own view of her talking.

Agreed, it's just laughable as a social commentary.[/diss]

It was never meant as a social commentary. That's one great misconception. What the authors wanted to express was the transiency of life. Google it.

But bah, forget it.

The notion that Death Note was meant to be anything other than incredibly entertaining perplexes me.

The notion that it was entertaining perplexes me, but to each their own.

What does this have to do with the Rebuild dub, anyway?

The only people I've seen seriously criticize Death Note's dub are hardcore weeaboos.

But again, what the hell does Death Note have to do with the Rebuild dub? Do they even share any of the same actors or localization crew? Don't we have a sub-forum where a discussion about the merits of Death Note, or lack therefore of, belongs?

No, I just checked, and that took a while...

Death Note was done by Viz, for the most part an entirely different talent pool there.

But anyway, the Rebuild dub is king, and thanks to the internet, I have one of these:
Spoiler:

All further arguments are futile, agreed?

Yes. Dubbies will not see reason, and it's pointless to try and talk them into it when they're bound and determined to avoid it at all costs.

Don't give me that look. You're the one who broke out the rocket launcher.

Okay, calm down (Skogu-kun, you too).

Look, all I'm doing is following an internet meme here, trying to divert from my own segway that somehow got us talking about Death Note.

And all I have been saying, is that the Dub, to its credit, accomplished something, it didn't suck, and in many ways was a fair and decent localization.

Don't like it? All right, fine, but I don't see anything here that warrants ragging on the cast or their efforts. Their understanding of characters has grown, we all can see that, and it is evident they cared for what they were doing here.

It wasn't apathetic, it wasn't "just because", they put effort into it, and it shows. Doesn't that deserve some recognition?

If I went over to your house and started smashing up your car would "I put effort into it" excuse the fact that I just destroyed your automobile? No it wouldn't. Effort only goes so far. I will openly agree that ADV put effort into their dub of Eva, but that doesn't make the end result suck less. In some aspects the extra effort only increased the problems because of misdirection (see Tiffany Grant's extra effort at being obnoxious as hell).

The Rebuild dubs don't have that amateurish "charm" to them but I'd argue more effort was put into them since there was actual quality control and they made a good end product.

I thought Alaska was talking about the Rebuild dubs.

That example would also have to include equipping my car with a surround sound stereo (which for my car, would mean you put something in there far more than it was worth anyway).

Along with including 5.1 digital sound on their disks, they threw in extra-canonical materials, some relevant, some not, the subs you yourself likely read, and yes, the commentary, which for all we tote it, is nothing more than their own opinions, and likely them just blowing steam for what must have been a hectic work schedule.

They did this when it was still common for companies to just put their Dub on the copy, added a chapter select, and say "Yup, job well done", then proceed to release the series two episodes at a time.

See other extra effort: credible German that doesn't take me out of the story. She didn't have to do it, she just did it.

Since it was largely the Rebuild dub I was talking of anyway, that's good to hear.

Tiffany Grant's German was simply better than Miyamura's. But it was still horrible. I saw Rebuild's dubs before I saw the original dubs and not once did I think during the Rebuild dubs "You know what would make this great? If Asuka randomly inserted German words into her dialogue." After seeing it in the original dub, I was pleased by its absence in the newer dubs.
