being a mom beings some amount of resposibility, which could create and ego. even positive feelings for somebody in the way Rei did, excluding the mother thing. the realization of this could bring about an ego.

Engh, I suppose that could work.
I've never really connected desire with ego.
I'm not sure if Rei could understand what she was feeling anyways. So it would be hard for her 'ego' to come thru.

reflecting on past experiences, desire creates an ego sometimes

My personal views on the AT-field, have already been expressed.
Particularly the idea of it being a physical manifestation of the pilots' barrier they have built around their egos. Rei, though perhaps lacking a superego, has the same issues as the other chosen pilots had.
From a more literal standpoint, an AT-field allows you to maintain your physical form, and allows you to keep your identity. It was Freud who devised the mind as id, ego, and superego correct?

I believe that it was freud but the Jungian theory applies more to Evangelion.

To my knowledge, the AT-field is not an actual psychological term, though it could be considered one in the world of Eva.
And yes, Jungian archetypes influenced Eva quite a bit, but Freud's theories also show up, like Electra complex (Misato and Kaji) and Oedipus complex (Shinji and Rei, or some would say Yui). Jung was a student of Freud after all. Off the top of my head, the only other Jungian influence I noticed lead off into "Significant Coincidences."

As I said I'm no psycologist though... I only heard it in Anime Insider

That's true.
It definatly has to do with a mixture between ego and the soul.

that would explain the strength of 01's AT field...Shinji is so linked to his mother...he even feels like the entry plug is a comforting place

Messiah what page did you post that on Gaia in the EFH. I remember seeing people aggreing with it but I can't remember if I said anything.

could the core simply be the container for the first pilot's soul?

If that were the case, then who would be the core of Unit-00?

My personal views are, as I have posted, that Rei can use her own soul to pilot Eva, just like Kaworu.
As for the first person to pilot Eva becoming the soul, I'm pretty sure that's correct, whoever conducted the first contact experiment is the one who is absorbed.
