I was looking at a pic of Unit 01, an it just occurred to me, why do Evangelions need knee pylons(if thats what there called)? They don't seem to do anything, are they just there to look cool.

I imagine it makes it a million times easier for the pilot to kneel down. Also, doing a driving knee kick makes it that much more painful with knee pylons.

Actually, I don't think they did. That's a waste, the pylon's are perfect for something like that. Otherwise, they seem to be good for the Eva leaping at opponents from a distance (which did happen in the series). They kneel down and jump. The pylons give them that extra momentum as they launch forward.

Protection?
They're also used as weapons in both the manga and Rebuild.

Where it gets really weird is when you notice that they move independently of the shins. Why would that be useful as a weapon or as some sort of armor/bracing?

Just easier on the knees for crouching down in a firing position I guess.

Or it could just be a visual thing, many mecha (i.e. most gundam mobile suits) have seemingly useless armor attachments.

I always thought it was intended so an Angel wouldn't get smart and use a cutting weapon to hack an Eva's legs off at the knees...
"Crapsack worlds and anti heroes have their place. Sometimes, they are very necessary. But an endless diet of dreary cyberpunk and dark fantasy won't do us any more favors than an endless feast of glurge. I'd argue that the cynical nature of these really hurt our ability to hope and work for better. It gets us to accept the hopelessness and jaded outlook of things as 'That's the way it is. I can't change it,' and stops us from fighting when we NEED to fight."

This sounds pretty reasonable to me. Same goes to the forearm 'pylons' and the elbow as well! But they also looks pretty darn snazzy! ;)

Given the added weight of the pylons and upper body armor I believe they would be necessary for crouching and balance in other various positioning; as previously mentioned. They do provide an important joint with extra armor and shock insulation as well I guess.

Also, they look neat.

They just see to be stylised kneepads to me. Or extended shin guards.

In which case it would still make more sense for the guards to be solidly affixed to the shin and thigh, not flexible in it's own right.

3. Looks good.

Im going for the obvious answer and say is just to look cool, those pylons make the Eva even more heavy and give less movility, it also doesn't offer any kind of protection.

I remember berzerk 01 doing that to sachiel in the manga. The knee pylons actually held up fairly well.

Because an engineer was walking past Gendo's office one day, and could have sworn they heard "You must construct additional pylons"
