If you see more of manga Asuka, it's because she's much shallower there - Sadamoto's preference for Rei leaves Asuka much sketchier, without the inner torment of the original, which is what made me such a bigtime Asuka fanboy myself.

Especially, the manga trivialises as comedy the two pivotal moments when she lowers her defenses.

That's true, I didn't really look at it that way.

I don't know how Sadamoto can like Rei so much, what with her having almost no personality. Much less have a Shinji/Rei preference. I always felt like that'd be incest, or something.

Though, he does seem to like Kaji/Misato, which is a good thing. :o

I'm not too worried about the "is it incest or is it rishathra?" angle - I just looked at the pairing as part of the normal dynamic (boy meets girl; brash newcomer intrudes; upsets ensue; boy and girl get back together). Plus it frees Asuka to find someone less disasterous for herself.

Meh. It just freaks me out that Rei has a little bit of Yui in her. It's like Shinji and Rei are related.

The only thing Shinji/Rei related I thought was cute was in volume 8 of the manga, when Shinji's still stuck in unit-01 and Rei is asking Yui to give him back.
She says, "Ikari-kun, I don't want to be made of straw anymore..."
It made me have a [i]little[/u] respect for the Shinji/Rei pairing, I guess.

I really hate the manga characters, partially because I find them not too synpathetic overall, and also because they are all complete bastardisations of the originals. I swear Sadamoto is a clone of f***ing Kubrik! He can follow the basic plot, but anything resembling depth or characterisation gets chucked out the window.

I think certain scenes were actually done pretty well, but otherwise I agree...to an extent. I don't think it was that bad.

She was probly wondering what it was like to kiss a boy, or if shiji liked her at all one or the other.

Shinji I think was just paralized buy his fear. He'd never kissed a girl before (just a guss), probly wondered why the hell Asuka would even be showing intrest in him.

The reason he hasn't kissed a girl before is because Asuka murmured "Mama..." when he was about to remedy that deficit.

Note Asuka's condition each time he does actually make some sort of advance - just another reason to see S/R as the much more plausible pairing.

What more can be said about Shinji & Asuka. Lets not forget that they are only like 14 or something. You cant blame him if he was shy.
