Repacking stories has been going on since the dawn of storytelling. I mean, just look at how many different versions of the Hercules myth there are.

My own reason for wanting a live action Evangelion is not so much that I am not satisfied with the show-- it's because I see potential to do something great. I've heard the old hat argument of "but it's still animated because of the CG Evas!" but the people who are using this talking point are kind of ignoring what the focus of Evangelion was-- the Characters. There's always going to be some appeal in seeing a well liked character brought to life by an actor, whether they're from your favorite novel, a comic book, or a cartoon. It's not just that though-- I'm curious to see how the Western version of the Eva myth is told. It's going to bring something new to the table, and as both an Evangelion fan, movie geek, and unapologetic optimist, I look forward to seeing what that is. It will be different, but different does = bad-- it is just different.

On top of that, there are a lot of people who haven't seen Evangelion because they're not into anime. A well made live action Eva movie will open up a lot of new people to the franchise, and act as a bridge that they can cross over to the anime with. A more accessible Evangelion means more fans, and I say the more the merrier!

So, uh... If this thread isn't about child porn anymore, can I lock it?

How many times you think that's ever been posted? Lol.

Anyways I'm all for the hire older actors but I also agree on the wait until the second movie to start taking risky moves.

Please lock it. It started as a way to get around the utter creepiness of watching 14 year olds in sexual situations and skin tight wetsuits prance around soaking wet and now sounds exactly like some damn studio board meeting.

"We don't need to tell this story but here's BS reason number one. Let's cast that nice Christian Bale man as Kaji."

I mean we're back at "A movie will open it up to new fans." defense.
No. A movie will jump start a franchise up to people who don't care about the old one. No one except the diehard Trek fans are talking about the original Star Trek after the release of this new film. There's no resurgance in Old Trek except for "the old show was boring". After Casino Royale no one went back to say the past 20 Bonds were great. After Batman Begins no one went back to love the four 90s era films. After "Last House on the Left 2009" made money there wasn't a sudden re-interest in Wes Craven's original. Just like there's no real revitalization in John Carpenter's Halloween after Rob Zombie's remake (and future sequel remake) butchered a good story in theaters.
Any mentions of the old one that existed are in the heavy geek circles online and touched on with either nostalgia or mockery.

Hollywood's a business. Look at Terminator Salvation. Nods to the original franchise be damned. Remakes, sequels, and adaptations are made to forgo what came before and simply built (key word BUILT) to make new money.

The people that go back and look at the original stuff? You're talking maybe 1% of the entire people that would pay to see a $150 million Evangelion blockbuster. Those would be the anime nerds (who most likely have seen it already) and obsessed film geeks (who hopefully would discover it on their own sometime regardless).

After Transformers came out I sure didn't see any real (read: non 100% nerd and anti-mainstream) revitalization in interest for the old works or cartoons. Except for a Bastardized Cartoon Network "Anime Like Adaptation" that is. Even "Speed Racer" got a short lived American cartoon with "Speed Racer: The Next Generation" after it the film hit theaters.

Say... think if PG-13 AmeriEva hits big there could be a chance for a Cheap Teen Titans like Anime Looking Cartoon Network adaptation to look forward too? If Powerpuff Girls could go from the US to Japan why not vice versa? GAG!

Let's lock this thread. It's dead.

This is why I would make a good Ikari, Ill get naked on camera. Ya, you heard me. Looking at you Darren!..I'm really tired.

But srsly, getting actors that are 18 seems like a better idea cause how good can a 14 year old act when it comes to Eva?

LAEM wouldn't be either a reboot or a remake though-- it'd be a live action adaptation of a Japanese animated TV series.

And @ Gendo'sPapa: you've made your point. You think that LAEM will be a bastardization of the show. Well, you are entitled to your own opinion, but there are people who still want to talk about the project and who are looking forward to it. If you're mad about the possibility that the popularity of LAEM could potentially overshadow the original series, look at it this way: If LAEM is popular, then Evangelion is going to be integrated into mainstream Western pop culture, which is something that has never happened before.

Just like any time a movie gets remade, rebooted, or adapted, the you'll be able to walk into the local mega store and find the walls well stocked with copies of the original, and do you know why? When people get caught up by the hype for a new movie, they are more likely to pick up and buy the source material if they see it on a store shelf. It's fairly simple economics, which is why stores always do it. A new movie in an existing franchise does generate interest in the original, which is why every time a new James Bond movie comes out they put out some new ridiculous collection of all the movies. If retail smells a big movie coming out, they tend to stock their shelves with whatever related material they can, because the commercials for the new movie are basically free advertising for the source material. It's not like people will go and watch the Eva anime en masse if the movie is a big hit, but any renewed interest in it would certainly be good.

I guess my problem is that I'm just not picky enough. I mean, I liked Transformers even though the fashionable thing to do is bash it, so clearly something is wrong with me. Either that, or maybe I'm just plain not picky, and I enjoy movies based on their own merits rather than grilling them over every deviation they make from the source material.

There's one last example I'd like to pull out of my bag, for those of you who are into gaming: the Fallout series. Fans of the Fallout series all got pissed when they found out that Fallout 3 would be a first person action RPG with FPS-like combat, and they also complained that the new developer (Bethesda) wouldn't "get" the franchise. They whined that in order to bring Fallout to a bigger audience, Bethesda was robbing the franchise of what made it special in the first place. But you know what? The reviewers all loved the game, it won multiple game of the year awards, and it went on to become the best selling Fallout game ever, expanding the fanbase dramatically. It may have been different, but it was still Fallout, and it was a fallout that a great many more people were able to enjoy than ever before.

I know you could say that comparing a video game to a TV show / movie is like apples and oranges, but when it comes to fanboys/fangirls, there's a lot less variety than you might think. People will always complain when something is "n00b friendly," because they're stuck on this idea that the people making the stuff owe them something for making the property popular. That's just plain not how the world works, and when you get beyond fanboyism, the world suddenly is a more enjoyable place to live in.
