I'll defer to the opinions of more learned members on this particular topic. Drinian and Ornette's synopsis have persuaded me. I have no objections to a license switch, other than to the potential bother, which I think is minimal. I will only say that I did not initially choose the GFDL directly. It was chosen via a list of questions that I was asked during the Mediawiki installation, which escape me at the moment.

So, I have no objections, and all my edits will be considered under the new licence if and/or when it is/was changed.

As to the potential of content being "taken" or more likely, "forked", that's simply the game we play on the internet has a whole and on wiki's in particular. If anything, it will encourage us to make the wiki good enough so that people won't fork it.

The differences between the CC-by-SA and GFDL is pretty minor, the only major difference is that we have a say in how credit should be given if any of the materials in the FGP licensed under CC-by-SA were to be redistributed. I've made a section on the copyrights page dealing with attribution, please take a look over it and make whatever suggestions you think is needed.

We can switch back to GFDL if this becomes a problem. The only change needed is a few lines in the mediawiki LocalSettings.php file (I've left the GFDL stuff commented out so the change is only a few keystrokes) and a revert of the copyrights page.

It's rather unlikely, but we must prepare for all contingencies.

I faintly remember there was a guy with a Gunbuster fan site who had to take down most of his images after Gainax's legal division sent him a scary letter. But this could be my memory playing tricks on me.

If Gainix do send a letter, I intend to present a long, polite but firm defense of the site as a whole and all content here. I believe that everything here is covered quite well under fair use doctrines, and I don't think Gainix can reasonably consider this site to be seriously impinging on their copyrights.

If worst comes to worst, we have backups.... Or will have by the end of this weekend.

My question is what does this mean for those who are editing the wiki itself? Do you own the copyright to the text that you submit?

As far as I understand, you only own your forum posts. Once you edit the wiki, the ownership of the text belongs to the wiki as a whole and so does the copyright.
