Gunbuster pre-dates GW, and to my knowledge, most of the previous Gundam series didn't feature the Gundams as uber deadly death machines the way they were depicted in GW. However, Gunbuster owes a lot to such shows like Mazinger and Getter Robo where the robots did bahave in a similar fasion.
